Corked - like a big percentage of our Burgundy/Loire bottles from the mid-90s.

While young, this was still quite enjoyable; the nose has loads of crushed rock and mineral notes, but beautiful full red fruit alongside. There are some floral notes and a touch of black tea as well; the fruit density on the palate is quite nice and while the wine is structured and still a touch austere, the sap from the fruit buffers it nicely into balance. This should age quite easily, but it is no crime to dip into one …

PnP. Clean floral nose. Tough tannins of the vintage mostly softened. Vibrant acidity to keep it really lively, very enjoyable bottle, probably the best showing from the case. Pure and silky with some dark soils lurking underneath, very Volny and very Angerville. I often wonder if ‘98 could turn out to be like ‘93 once those stubborn tannins turned the corner. This bottle was showing all the possibilities.

A bit dirty and earthy to start but does clean up somewhat over 20-30 minutes with some Volnay red fruit and florals emerging. Also a bit rustic in texture with acidity jutting at points. Unclear that this gets better from here, based on this bottle.

This wine opened quite shy yet demonstrating plenty of raspberry and strawberry fruit on the palate. With decanting over several hours a beautiful nose of changing red fruit characters with citrus and floral touches evolved leading to a detailed and complex palate of dark raspberries, wild strawberries, dark chocolate and bitter orange. There were some tertiary characters but the purity of fruit rang clear through this wine that seems young at 25 years. Delicious but needing a decant or 24hrs …

PnP. Nose is not entirely clean here, ever so slight amounts of TCA. Fairly expressive floral nose. Sweet and fine tannins, mostly resolved. Vibrant acidity level, very lively bottle. A bit of burnt tobacco at finish. Definitely ready to go. Not a bad showing other than the “unclean” nose.

PnP. ABV 13%. Subdued nose but fairly clean. Fine and dry tannins on mid-palate. Bright acidity level, higher than previous bottles. Finished with some dark soils and hint of oaks. Ready for consumption now. It is what it is, doubt this will improve much from here onward. Just an okay wine for the plot.

This one just grew and grew in the glass. A little shy at first, but when it starts to open, the wine just takes off completely. Here we are talking opulent fruit, sweet elements reminiscent of Champans. In the mouth it is juicy and throws around it raspberries, plums, raspberries, acid as if it were candy. This was my WOTN for a while. Until Clos de Ducs just shook his head and brushed both Caillerets and Taillpieds to the side.

Decanted and poured straight away. Really old aromas in the beginning, old dusty cupboard and wet wool. The latter disappeared after a while, and it turned into a soft and delicious wine with strawberry and mushroom aromas, and a lot of fresh fruit intact.

Good drinking now but wouldn’t wait much longer as this seems to be just past peak and deteriorating slightly. Good developed red berry flavors with secondary and even faint tertiary detail, spice, browning fruit, looking towards fall leaves. Still has red fruit at the core, but thinning. Acid is high relative to the remaining flesh. Very enjoyable but cull now.

11th of 12, opened 90 minutes, perfect level, cork quarter travelled, back on track, lovely aromatics and palate, classy and nuanced and with better fruit balance v 96 acidity than previous night's Grivot Brulees and last bottle of Ducs for that matter, no upside from here, but no rush. F+ (18).

Beautiful wine. Decanted 2 hours in advance, still improved in the glass. Last bit after 3 1/2 hours finally fading. Structure-driven as opposed to fruit-driven. Patience paid off with this one. Great pairing with confit de canard.

Mostly dark soils on the nose with just a touch of floral notes, not very forthcoming. Drying tannins on mid-palate. Dark fruits and good acidity but not showing much complexity today. Nowhere near previous bottle a couple of years ago.

8th of 12, pnp, perfect cork and level, big step up on October bottle, now starting to come together with attractive nose being better reflected on palate, though some tannic underpinning remains, complex fruit in better balance, moreish, still improving, 10 plus years life. F+ (18).

7th of 12, decanted 90 minutes, perfect cork and level, still an ugly duckling, fragrant and attractive on nose but on palate tannins still dominating plum an cherry fruit, not unbalanced and decent length but drying and uncomfortable on exit, my suspicion is that this will come together in 2 to 5 years but not particularly pleasant at present. VGI (17).

Black fruit and lots of stony earthiness. Still plenty of weight to the fruit. Befitting a 98, the tannins here are drying and slightly bitter. Like a lot of Burgundies in this style, this absolutely needs food: paired with a dry-aged steak, those bitter tannins mostly melt away and allow the lovely fruit to show through.

Like a pleasant fall day, this was a well developed wine full of fallen leaves, cedar forest, and pumpkin spice. Always a fan of d’Angerville, this bottle seemed like a worthwhile auction pick and it certainly didn’t disappoint! Plenty of sour cherry and raspberry here, combining with citrus zest, sundried tomato, and iron meatiness. Initially starting off funky as heck, it eventually progressed towards soft sweet spice and pleasant red fruit. Licorice root and cinnamon stick lingered on the finish; …

Very floral on the nose, clean too. Tannins have softened a fair bit vs last bottle 2 years ago. Red fruits and great acidity level. Not very complex or long but good balance. Should be at the beginning of a very long drinking window. Showing a lot of depth on the 2nd day, deserved a better score, clearly better days are ahead.

OMG!!! A d'Angerville wine that is actually drinkable... a first for me ;) This has actually finally come around, displaying bright Volnay fruit and a nice rounded palate. Almost 22 years from vintage, this is finally in it's drinking window. By no means an Earth-shattering wine, but it is very pleasing to see what a mature d'Angerville actually tastes like.

Great bouquet, clean and pure, floral, soily but bright red cherry fruit with a certain Volany vibrancy. Nose is actually really good and intriguing. The palate however suffers from excessive ‘96 acid and is a little out of balance. Still pretty delicious with Cantonese roasted meats.

Can you give a wine 91 points and be disappointed? When it's d'Angerville from a great vintage, yes. My expectations might have been unrealistic, but this bottle was atypical of the house style.Dark ruby with no bricking whatsoever. Nose showed a lot of promise with some sous bois and truffle but the palate and overall mouthfeel was almost voluptuous...or even...dare I say modern in style? The usual transparent and ethereal fruit element dominated in a slightly sweet blanket. Ample acidity …

From the wine list at Charlie Bird (NYC). I was expecting to the love this, but honestly while it was enjoyable it really did not stand out between the champagne and the '88 Rinaldi Barolo that followed. On the nose a bit of barnyard funk and violets. On the palate, cherry fruit it still present, but not a lot going on in the mid palate. My last sips when paired with goose liver crostini started to really come alive, so …

Coravined. Muted on the nose but clean. Silky smooth texture, firm but fine tannins. Good concentration and length. Still some oaks lingering at backend. ABV 13% with just a touch warmth, excellent balance. Better on the palate than on the nose. Burgundy WIMPS, Complet table (La Trompette, London) : Nicely dense, plush nose. Densely silky with a fine acidity through the finish. There's something that one can't quite place though, and after a while it seems to be a little corky on the finish. Shame, still drinkable, but not quite as impressive as previously. Initially ***1/2

7th of 12 - much less convincing than last October's note with fruit more attenuated and a pinched finish, just when this wine seemed to have settled into a fine maturity with the vintage's acidity lifting the flavour profile, it now seems to have relapsed to its slightly disjointed former self. Very good plus (16.5/20).

5th of 12, only started to drink well in 2012 and this was best bottle yet, opened half an hour before drinking - mid ruby, rim lightening, very fragrant, pure and refreshing, black cherries, damsons and sous bois, medium palate, pure, classy fruit, long but sour note at end, fruit now absorbed tannins and former seering acidity, grip suggests this wine has some way to go before fully mature. At present, fine (17.5/20).

Ruby brick color with a bit of orange at the rim. Cherry fruit and crushed rocks are supported by a bit of menthol and freshly husked corn - odd but it works. There is a savory depth to this wine that I really like. However, it could use a bit more depth to buffer the tart berry fruit. I also get a bit of mustiness on the palate - though nothing in the nose. An awkward showing that is still …

Volnay @ The Ledbury (The Ledbury, London) : Quite lifted, red fruited nose. A touch of furniture polish that seems to alternate with a lovely rose petal scent until the roses finally win out. Bright red fruit on the attack. Bright, nicely focused. Some tannin on the finish. Needs a few years but certainly approachable. ***(*)

Floral cherry nose with gunpowder, fennel, violets, herbs, clove and freshly roasted coffee. Medium bodied and refreshing palate with silky tannins, bright sour cherry to raspberry fruit, meaty feel and some green notes. Lengthy wet stone finish. Medium to light ruby with tawny edge. Tough at first with licorice scents. Medium weight, tart cherry fruit, raspy tannins. This eased up, developing some degree of sweetness and that wonderful Taillepieds stoniness. Very interesting to compare to the 2000 version which we had in the last week-perfect display of vintage effect. This was a bit heavier, less floral, and far more tannic. Will probably be even more rounded off in 2-3 years. Two simple words for lovers of lean, …

Nice to encounter a good bottle of this, which confirms that my last one was not what it should have been. I wouldn't exactly call this ready to drink, but it wasn't closed and ornery, either. The fruit still has a glint of brightness to it and comes across nice and fresh and laced with crushed gravel. It doesn't come across all that tannic, but the tannin does have a nice grittiness to it, and the fruit's juicy acidity gives …
