Bisceglia, Gudarra, Aglianico del Vulture

Oaky on the nose. Taste has nice red fruit, more cranberry than anything else. And like cranberry it has a bitter finish. Not an amazing wine but enjoyable and went well with truffle red pepper pesto which is no easy thing.

This is my least favorite Aglianico to date. Has some encouraging flavors, but almost taste like two wines mixed together. Has deep core of black and tart cherry. There is also a funk on the periphery with mint and carbon. Texture is off too. After the initial cherry passes, it seems thin and finish is unenjoyable.

2-3 hour decan is a must. Big wine. Flavors of chocolate and flavors and texture of graphite. Very nice wine. This grape makes great wines.

This wine is very good. A dark Crimson, ruby color. Very overt and compelling nose of plum and strawberry pie, over ripe tomatoes and burnt milk chocolate wood chips. However so far, only 1 out of 6 bottles from a case has been in good condition. All the others are cooked and flawed.

Decanted 2 hours prior to dinner, but really reached its best at the end. I would recommend a 3 hour decant. This is a lovely wine, and GREAT QPR. I would say by 3 hour it was a 93-94 pt wine. Wonderful layers of mocha and coco powder. Just a great example of the grape. I will be loading up on the Riserva that just became available.

This drinking very well. Black fruit and great Aglianico smokiness. Tobacco and cedar with well integrated acidity and moderate tannins. Great with a grilled tri-tip.

It's been two years since I last tasted this, and it's still going strong, even marginally better with some bottle age. Cigar/tobacco notes with dark, exotic fruit and peppery-sweet edge. Solid 89-90-point intro to Aglianico. Drink now-2018

A focused ball that unfolds and spreads thickly. Drying tannins. PnP but needed a lot more air so leaving NR.

Not decanted, consumed over ~3 hours. Pretty similar to the bottle from a month ago, although more aggressively rustic in structure. This worked well enough with food, but this was pushing it for me when sipped it on its own...and I generally like some grip to my wine.

Not decanted, followed over ~3 hours in small pours. Dark blackish red in the glass, mostly showing non-fruit notes on the nose - strong chocolate-covered raisins, hints of meat and smoke, an edge of something astringent or rusty. The palate adds some dark berry fruit but is otherwise consistent with the nose, all carried on a fairly rustic acid/tannin structure. This honest, earthy aglianico begs to accompany a bold and meaty dish, and I'm digging it this evening.

Wines At Our Table; May 17th, 2015; 5/11/2015-5/17/2015 : Very dark crimson color with a black fruits, tar, dark chocolate, and glimpses of truffle and violet aromas. On the palate, it's medium-bodied with astringent tannins and black currant, black cherry, plum and bittersweet chocolate flavors. Long finish.

Fading garnet color. Licorice, clove, plum, blackberry, earth, smoke, leather on the nose. That and iron, blood on the palate. Medium body & acidity. High tannins and alcohol (tastes hotter than the advertised 14%). Nice round mid-palate, then a somewhat hot & harsh finish, but a nice cherry/berry/licorice/tannin after-taste lingers on for quite a while. Definitely a roller-coaster ride: up, down, up.... Nice complexity but not quite balanced. Still an interesting drink and a good QPR.

Still quite tannic, though at the same time mature, so I'm not sure how this will end up, but it was quite nice with lasagna.

opaque, liquorish and cooked berry aromas fly out of the glass, there is a good amount of smoke, dried herbs and juicy blackberry fruit on the palate, complex, interesting and different, this powerful red shows strong character, went well with dried meats

Quite tasty. Black plum, even prune, tobacco leaf (cigar wrapper), blueberry reduction, warm asphalt. On the medium side of full-bodied, more tobacco leaf on the palate, black and dark blue fruits, nice sweetness to the fruit, finishes with dry spicy oak.

mashed berries, plums and earthy aromas, powerful mouthful of iron, blood, cherries, soil and minty tobacco, a big, complex wine, great with pizza and big enough to go well with hearty feasts

Big, burly aromas: blood, iron, chargrilled meat and exotic spice. Palate doesn't quite deliver though: lots of chalky tannin and not much acidity equals slightly tart and a very dry mouthfeel. Despite that - and this wine is by no means sweet - there is Black Forest Gâteau quality that is intriguing; makes me wonder what this was like in its youth.

The most enjoyable of three Bisceglia Aglianicos we tried last night with a Basilicatan meal. More assertively spicy and fruity than their cheaper version, more accessible (and almost as intense) as their Riserva: a good balance of quality for money. Deep purple in colour, dark berry and black pepper on the nose, a tang of acidity, fine tannins, good length. Would be too much on its own, but superb with pasta with a tomato and spicy sausage sauce. 14%.

You can really taste the soil, where this wine has grown on. Quite strong-earthy flavours. For me not an easy drinking wine by itself but a PERFECT match with a typical south-italian meal ( e.g. Falsu magru).
