Cassan, Gigondas

Dullish red with notable sediment and a hint of brown. Honeyed red fruits on the nose. Vaguely sweetish front to mid palate with notes of fig confit leading to a prune finish, which lasts forever before changing to more of a strawberry jam note.

Hazy notes from over the last two nights. This was really singing from the get-go. Classic Southern Rhone notes of earthy cherries, plums, garrigue and tar on the pure, medium-full bodied palate. The mixture of purity and rustic aspects is also classic Gigondas to me. Great now, but will last many years as well. Very impressive (A-).

Nice red-brownish mature color. Delicious mature grenache nose; dusty and quite peppery - the pepper that made me chose some of these 2002-vintages. But also sweet from the grenache. 2002 such a difficult vintage many places, but Cassan made a fantastic wine in my oppinion. Also peppery on the palate - mature fruits - just a real nice taste. I really like this domaine - they make a very such nice Southern Rhône - even in the bad years!

Exceptional effort for the vintage. This is just entering its mature phase. Black cherry cola, black pepper, and leather on a very expressive high-toned nose. Finishes with a cocoa note and still firm tannins. Will be long-lived for an '03, could be enjoyed for several more years. Very nice Gigondas!

Beautiful color with a nice bricky tint on the edges. For a 2003 it had a lot of fruit left. The alcohol had been reduced considerably from the original tasting a couple of years ago. Very, very good wine!

Decanted and let breath for 3 hours. Slightly tannic but good leather on the nose.

Big wine. Rich and leathery on the nose. Red fruit on the palette and long. Decanted for a few hours and had softened slightly but would benefit from longer. Would also benefit from another year or two in the bottle.
