Retail $50. 100% Nebbiolo. It has been about three and a half years since I last opened a bottle of this wine and while my waistline has changed, sadly, this wine is still gangbusters. Earthy, menthol, dried cherry, tobacco leaf, mocha, and maybe violet on the nose. In other words, there is plenty going on and it is all good. The palate is bright, tart, and complex; the fruit is subtle, for sure, but that tartness? Whoa. While this is …

Oof. Waited too long here, on a Barolo NOT built for the ages. Cooked, stewed fruit. Flabby. Not disgusting, but not worthy of the Barolo title, either.

Retail $50. 100% Nebbiolo. For whatever reason, I decided to pull out this wine as well as a 2005 Burgundy fearing, after reading the notes on CT, that one or both might have turned and were well on the downward slope. Well, a funny thing happened on the way to the corkscrew. This, like the Burgundy, was absolutely fabulous. Minty, fruity (still), peppery on the nose after a bit of time open (muted initially). The palate? Whoa. I really don't …

She’s dead, Jim. Over cooked fruit that is now stewed and figgy. Brown edges and walnut stewed fruit flavour. Bottles were cellared perfectly. What a shame.

Garnet with minimal bricking at the edges, clean, bright red fruit, some oak and some nice dustiness on nose. Soft mainly resolved tannins, fresh redcurrant and rainier cherry and a hint of floral tones, medium mouth feel and decent length. On the down side, the heat of the vintage is starting to peek through and show a slightly hot and alcoholic tone that would have been better a couple of years back when it was better hidden.

Still acceptable, but marginal cork saturated within 1/4 inch of top. Stored at 55 degrees. Decanted. Medium bodied, somewhat translucent crimson, clear edges. Very firm, grippy, drying tannins with restrained, cedary red fruit. Tannins start to loosen about two hours in. Recommend food and a long decant for the foreseeable future; however it the enclosure will last, this could go at least another ten years and be really good.

good cork. Nice orange/red color. Initially restrained nose that opened up over the course of an hour and a half to reveal notes of red fruit, brambles, and oak. Still quite tannic and "fiery" in the mouth, which I think is probably typical of the "heat year" of 2003. Went well with chopped brussell sprouts and bacon, and actually not bad with fish (very fresh salmon baked simply).

This was one of the reds we consumed with Thanksgiving dinner. This wine has very firm tannins, still, even after years of aging. But the finish on the palate is not as harsh as younger tannic-strong reds. Overall, a fine accompaniment to a fine meal. Excellent (87.5).

All strawberries, red cherried and truffles. Massive truffle inflected nose. Loses some of the truffle notes for cinnamon stick, nutmeg and tree bark as it breathes. Gorgeous. Can age a few more years, but just magnificent right now.

Colour : is still red/garnet. A bit of sediment. Aromas : Nice aromas, rich smelling (full) .......... floral notes (like dried roses), cherries, ripe plums, cinnamon and allspice. Taste : Medium Bodied ........ wow, the tannins are really present .... drying almost chalky and a bit chewy. A nice juiciness to the wine. Again ..... opens up with red cherries and ripe juicy plums. Definite cinnamon and allspice kick in the mid-palate to the finish. Some black tea and tar …

Tasted at Anneke Jans. Deep ruby color. Nose of dark berries, cherry, wood. Palate of blackberry and cherry, earth, some tar followed by massive, mouth-coating tannins even after 1hr of decanting. Nice wine but needs some more time.

nose: rich cherry tones strike you right off the bat with subtle tones of herbs, cinnammon, spices, and bits of rose petals. Very perfumed with a nice richness to it taste: good fresh tones of red cherries, spices, rose petals, and berries with a touch of herbs. nice and delicate even at this early stage with a really good medium/light feel that flows well across teh palate overall: a wonderful value for a barolo. It really starts to unwind with …

...less formal than usual notes... NOSE: bold nose: serious volcanic rock, pepper, italian plums, some oak spice, little allspice hints. Not a lot of fruit on the nose, but bold still. PALATE: aggressive tannins all up in the mouth - fruit and oak tannin both. A little currant fruit notes, but the oak flavors take over too much, way too dominate. It's too bad, i can't get much more from this wine.

Decanted for about 1 hr. Allspice nose with hints of fragrant rose. Nice medium ruby red color with decent legs (14.5% alc). Delicious sweet cherry and cinnamon flavor with solid mouthfeel giving way to a medium length dusty medium tannic finish. The balance is very nice for this alcohol level. Probably opened this one too early, but wanted to try this out to see how 2003, which was a tough year for vintners, faired. I have to say this is …

If this is any indication of the vintage for Barolo I'm encouraged! Granted this wine may not have the cellar potential of some Barolo but right now it is seriously yummy! Great strawberry and spice character with tannin but not too much tannin.

Cherry pit, plum and mushroom nose. Firm and astringent with warming, sweet-centred fruit flavours; good finish. 3.5/5
