My wife convinced me the wine lacked zip, it was flat, good fruit, smooth tannins but no complexity or oomph, drank with loin lamb chops, eggplant and veggies, constantly trying to reassess my taste, one more bottle, is the wine over the hill? 13.5% abv, we have been trying to drink lower alcohol wines but do wines need the extra pizzazz.

(16,5/20) Even after 4 hours carafe, this wine felt young, although accessible too. Blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 35% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot. Aged for 16 months in French oak barrels. Medium+ intense aromas of violet, red plum, blackcurrant, blackberry, liquorice wood, flint, vanilla, coffee, leather, bacon, tobacco. This has ample juicy red and blue fruit with plentiful detail, including notes of licorice, spices, chocolate, and pyrazine-derived accents. It's medium bodied and fairly energetic with subtle tannins. This is not quite ready to drink, but its approachable and there is significant aging potential. An outstanding value.

At five years of age and counting, this is already drinking well by my tastes, with a pungent, slightly biscuity, floral nose of red and black fruits with the same on the nicely concentrated, dusty palate. Prieuré-Lichine Wine Dinner at L'Etoile (L'Etoile, Madison, WI) : This was served alongside with the '20 and it was interesting how similar these were. Others at the table thought there was more of a difference, but I didn't. Obviously young, but showing dark fruits, currant, a bit of black pepper and some graphite. I slightly preferred the '20.

PNP. Deep dark ruby magenta color. Black plum, dark raspberry thumbprint cookie, spicy dark chocolate, pomegranate seed, and subtle garrigue. Dry, satiny palate. Nose: Smokey cassis, moist earth. Palate: Woody blackberries, boysenberries, burnt coffee grounds, polished tannins, bitterness is a bit overwhelming at first but mellows in the glass. On day two, cedar becomes more prominent and comes into balance with some anise and a ripe dark cherry that comes forward. Deep purple in color, dry, acid medium+, tannins high, fine and fairly integrated despite youth, finish long, minerality high, alcohol medium. On the nose black fruits black berries, cassis, currants, dark cherries. On the palate, ripe plums, black cherries, cassis, oak, cedar, anise. A beautiful elegant wine probably best after 2026.

Another drinkable youngster from old faithful. This producer makes on mark wines that score comfortably into the 90s in my book. When you consider the price and the age worthiness and the appellation, it’s a no brainer. Medium bodied and very well balanced between red fruit, earthy smolder, and sandy tannins. Medium ruby colour. Medium and developing nose with blackcurrant, eucalyptus, black pepper, licorice, vanilla and coconut. Medium taste of blackcurrant, green bell pepper, black pepper, vanilla, cloves and cedar. Long and dry finish. High acidity. Medium tannins. Medium body. A very good Margaux that is very young and closed. Drink in ten to twenty years. Goes well with beef or lamb.

This house is probably one of the most overlooked producers in Bordeaux. To me, this and Giscours are safe bets in every vintage for case purchases. No denying the crossover intent of this wine, cradling fruit depth with beautiful expressions of margaux earth and coffee nuances. Very French and yet lush. This will be rocking in 7 years. UGC Bordeaux (Union Station - Chicago IL) : Walk around tasting. Black plum and blackberry jam with anise and other spice. Not a powerhouse, but nearly accessible now with soft, silky textures, even more finessed on finish. Likely a very good value, 91-92 point potential.

Tasted at the UGC event in NYC. Always a favorite of mine. This vintage is the best Ive ever tasted which goes back to 1986. Again the '19's are just so floral and fruit packed with such fine tannins that are in total balance. Really nice wine that does not disappoint. Love it.

Opens quite vibrantly fruited with lots of energy and juiciness, but this is a dense, packed wine and soon its natural richness takes over and envelops that initial linear figure. At that point it features what a certain someone would have called "gobs" of blueberry fruit and crushed gravel and surprisingly old-style tannins - no effort made here to soften them up so it's good there are enough fruit-gobs here to soak up some of that steel-wool structure. Day 1 with chicken sausage burrito. With inflation, it’s either this or downgrade to a fifth growth (no thanks). Day 2 with NY Strip steaks (2 for 1 special). Day 3 with egg McMuffins (homemade to save $$). Opaque dark red purple, obviously very youthful edges. This is enjoyable now, but the fruits are dominated by wood (oak, cedar), spice, and black licorice. Tannins are present but not overbearing.
