Used the Durand and just was able to get the cork out in one piece. Brownish red in color. At first, it seemed dead. A real barnyard funk and not much taste. Gave it two hours of slow ox in the bottle, then decanted. Most of the funk had blown off but still not showing much on the nose. Opened a bottle of something else to go with dinner and left this in the decanter overnight at room temperature. Day …

Cork in good condition. Decanted about an hour prior to serving based on previous experience with this single vineyard Chianti. Nice ripe aromas combining cherry fruit with tertiary notes: spices, leather, nicely balanced palate. still plenty of tannins, good texture and length. No hurry to drink. Improved in the decanter overnight. Great complexity and textured. This is an under-rated producer.

I enjoyed this wine experience. After about 2 1/2 hrs in a decanter, it finally loosened up, and showed some fruit It smelled beat and old for the first 2 hrs, like it hadn’t been stored well. After 2.5 hrs black cherry, dried cherry, and tart cherry all evolving together on the nose, definitely leather, and some hints of herbal notes of fennel More acidic on palate w tart cranberry profile, and tannins are still very alive Seems over the …

Dinner at Osteria Langhe (Chicago, IL) : The nose on this was the slight bit stewy (what 1990 wine isn't?), but once you got past that, there was a nice bit of earth to go alongside the fruit. There was also a hint of volatility as well, but if you hold your nose, you can make it go away. The palate was much better. Sure, there was still a slight bit of stewiness, but it wasn't too much, and mostly …

Fine-Wine Winter Dinner (Ponsonby, Auckland, New Zealand) : Drunk as a mystery wine after a flight of Leoville Las Cases and Harlan Estate 1996's, this was in no way embarrassed following those wines. Old-school wine making, with a chocolatey, leathery and cigar ash complexity, allied to the dense and ripe dark cherry fruit. On the palate, this is still tannic but also exhibits the ripeness of the vintage. Showing some age, but still alive and extremely complex. This is a …

Had with the boys from Scenic/ Tapestry at Il Mondo Vechio in Madison NJ. An absolutely delicious Chianti Classico. Fully mature and resolved tannins. What a mouth feel ! Both at the start and after 30 minutes this wine drank outstanding. It was complex, delicious, and oh so much fruit. Tar, earth, smoky start which led way to blackberry & slight background of sweet cherry pie, right down to the crust. This is a beautiful wine, mature wine with considerable …

Sadly horribly corked. The depth and a body were apparent. Still alive and potentially great if not for taint.

Impromptu dinner with ADT (Ponsonby, Auckland, New Zealand) : A very beautiful Chianti at full - late maturity - a true vino di meditazione. Extremely savory nose of tobacco ash, marmite, leather, black olive, caramel, game and dense boysenberry. In the mouth, extremely complex and the savory aspects are apparent but the overwhelming driving force of the structure is the beautiful sweet fruit. A gorgeous, fully resolved structure ends with the remnants of a very fine tannic background. This is …

Finally, a good bottle of this. Nose showing cherry, earth, leather, and a complementary hint of varnish. Quite structured with good acidity in the mouth, still some tannin, and just enough Italian bitterness to give it bite. Persistent. Nice to have my faith in old Tuscans renewed.

Sour dark cherry, mushroom, balsamic, earth, tobacco - very much old Sangiovese here. Still structured in the palate, this is very earthy and tertiary until you try it with some fatty meat, when finally everything smooths out and the dark cherry fruit shows up as surprisingly rich and glossy. At peak, I think, as I'm not sure the fruit will last long enough for the remaining structure to fully resolve, a common issue I have with Sangiovese.

Aged cherries , supple tannins and a healthy dose of Burgundian goodnes. Smooth , classic with some tobacco leaves and dried earth.

Sweet tea leaves, balsamic and saline notes. Nicely matured, layered with a seam of minerality. Aristocratic.

Blood, iron, iodine, leather and dried cherries. This is what chianti classico dreams of becoming. Lasted about and 2 hours before falling apart, i would not decant.

Vintage Chianti Tasting at Tolani (Tolani) : The 1990 Il Poggio was another saddening let-down, as stewed red fruits bombarded the nose. The palate showed old wood and tired red fruits with unbalanced acidity. Too bad; this wine must have been mistreated in its life.

Pre-2000 Chiantis at Tolani (Tolani Restaurant, NYC) : This wine had clearly become cooked and/or oxidized somewhere on its long journey here. Very unfortunate.

This was my third bottlle of tis wine and better than the last one. the variation in the bottles I had was big. this one had a very tertiar nose that didn't match the taste. In the mouth the wine showed more youth, especcialy the tannins, that were still not integrated. Strangley enough the wine made me think of a fine Nebbiolo with some roses, tar, leather along with the fruit. interesting stuff
