Funky, fresh, and minerally. That's how this Aglianico opens, and, no doubt, there's a lot here for the money ($14 in Ontario). The funk is barnyard and old flowers, the freshness is not-too-ripe dark berries and cherries, and the mineral is, as one often finds in southern Italy, iron, and added to these come pot pourri, balsamic strawberries, pepper spice, and new leather, with an odd tongue-tingling spritz and chalky tannins. Drank two bottles, both had a slight tangy/effervescent feel at first, this eventually fades and the fruit comes out. Not sure if this is off or not. Once it fades the wine is fruity, and has good flavour.
