Domaine Weinbach, Pinot Gris Altenbourg

Layered, complex, mineral, sleek, amazing. Bottle seems to have hit a really good stage of drinking where the fruit personality (yellow pear, pear drop) is still the star. Aromatic- floral, honeyed, fruited, shiny, The depth of off dry flavors extends to honey botrytis, toasted walnuts, and horseradish. Wears its beefy alcohol (14.5!) so well. The texture is sleek, not the commonly found Baroque weight. This feels Grand Cru start to long mineral finish. This is what all Pinot Gris should …

Teetering, though not yet drying up--if anything tasting sweeter and less balanced as the fruit subsides. Don't tarry!

Voluptuous, wrap-around pinot gris. The tropical flavours are now more melded into baked, warm fruits. Ripe and sweet but all in balance. Very good and ready.

Likely a bit past it’s prime as there are definite Sherry notes but with air this revealed some real complex, honeyed flavors (the RS is considerable). Lovely body and best with food. A charmer if you’re willing to work it.

I wanted to like this wine a lot. I'm a big fan of Alsatian Pinot Gris and I don't mind (and in fact enjoy) the hints of sweetness that typically come with that. This ended up being just fine. It's light with lots of bright honey and maybe some white flowers. What was missing for me was some balancing acidity. I did like just the touch of spice though that came towards the end.

Remarkably pale. Nectarine and pineapple nose, but fresh and delectable rather than obvious. Pretty good amount of acidity, balancing the near medium impression of sweetness. Concentrated and fine palate.

Would have never guessed this was a P. Gris in a blind tasting. Floral, citrus, peach and petrol notes that make me think Riesling. A thick yellow color, full bodied by only slightly viscous, with acidity that matches the residual sugar. A bit off-dry. Drinking beautifully tonight. Wow. This was throwing quite a bit of sediment, but the wine was not flawed in my opinion.
