Black cherry, campfire, dry sand. Dark fruit with excellent lift and plenty of savory elements. Hearty enough to stand up to bolognese or ragu.

Potpourri, dried flowers, orange peel, tobacco, herbs, dusty old books on the nose. Full bodied, you can tell this was really big in its youth, but quite balanced on the palate with mostly resolved tannins and notes of plums, black cherries, and tobacco followed by a surprisingly long finish. This feels like it’s at peak now and won’t be going downhill quickly. I wouldn’t be surprised to find it drinking well in 10-15 years.

Another beautiful showing for this wine. Lovely colour, nice cherry and plum nose, but the standout is the bright crunchy red plum and cherry fruit on the palate. Really nicely balanced with crisp acidity , good finish too. Cannot wait to try the riserva.

Has mellowed over time and is starting to balance out. A good Pizza wine that could go a couple more years.

Hallelujah…after a corked bottle earlier and a “not ready to drink” bottle a few years ago, this bottle was excellent! In development with mixed, fresh red fruits, notable structure, evolving balance and a big finish. Decanted. Enjoyed with a Supreme Cauliflower crusted pizza. This can probably age for another 15+ years.

This wine was built to age well. Opened, aerated and drank half. It was ok. Pumped the air our and sealed for a week (forgot about it). Thought I would have to dump the remainder but it still smelled fresh and showed beautiful fruit and complex finish. Likely ok to cellar for another 3-5 years.

Enjoyed over 2 evenings with pasta. Lightly extracted red fruits with a kiss of cedarwood. The tannin was un-noticed. Really in the zone.

Really nice classico - just the right weight for a light pasta dish - full of juicy red and black cherry fruit, lovely fresh fruit aromas to go with the juicy fresh palate as well. Dry with a firm finish - made for food. Excellent value.

Some confusing recent negative notes on this wine. Delivers everything that a Chianti Classico should. Sure, not a blockbuster super-extracted red - just a super-friendly food wine that offers abundant acidity, woodsy Sangiovese flavors, and Italian table wine sensibility. 2017 isn't turning out to be one of the better vintages, but this is one of the better CCs from the vintage that I've tried recently.

I'm a fan of very high acidity in wines, so take that into account, but I found this wine was really bright, high-toned and fresh, with red acidic berries - redcurrants, possibly slightly underripe raspberries and a certain savoury edge. I couldn't say for certain what it was, leather or tobacco, but rounded the wine out nicely for me. Drinking it with roast lamb of course helped that acidity immeasurably, but I really enjoyed this.

Tasted blind on Christmas Eve. Nose is beautiful- floral, earthy, woodsy, light tobacco. I wish I liked the taste as much tho- medium body, a bit too acidic, sour cherry and short on finish. 3.0

Very dry and high acidity. A good food wine but would be too astringent on it’s own. Would be a great pizza wine. May wait for the next bottle just to see if it balances out more.

I really like this. Not very fruity, yet, a wine of substance. Very dry and somewhat tannic. I don't discern any unintegrated oak flavors. Well balanced. Nice!

Very disappointing given this producer’s reputation for quality, excellence and consistency. I tend to agree with TWARD and other comments indicating this is underwhelming….muted fruits, and unbalanced and overwhelming tannin and acidity. Hopefully, this bottle is an “outlier” but based on some of the other less than stellar comments, I’m not very hopeful.

Intriguing. Drying out or not yet ready. Left sealed in the fridge while we were away in France, the last two glasses on return were the best. I think this will last.

This had more depth and was much more robust than the '98 alongside it. Whereas the '98 was nicely integrated and soft, this still showed layers of fruit and tobacco and earth, deeper, more robust on the palate, firmer tannins. Lovely Sangio, years to go. Amali.

Lovely red fruited cherry nose. No dustiness or over development. Lovely mid weight red fruited Sangiovese, without any raspiness or dryness. Surprisingly fresh and quaffable. Just a lovely chianti in its prime. Just a great bottle

Pinkish color with much bricking at edges, as expected. Nose of earth, flowers & some red fruit. There's a definite sweetness in the nose. Medium bodied, with some spice, soft, mostly faded tannins. Though still somewhat enjoyable, most of the fruit is gone from this wine leaving primarily an herbal, earthy, flowery, somewhat spicy concoction. The wine is definitely on its last legs and I wish I had opened it years ago

Perfumed nose of mushroom, sour cherry and saddle leather. Juicy sour cherry on the palate with flavors of wet clay, mushroom and a little menthol. Very drinkable thanks to juicy acidity. Classic and satisfying. Partially resolved tannins still push a little on the back end but this is pretty easy going, especially with food. I suspect it is only a few years from peak; leftovers were nice but had lost some energy on day 2. Drink or hold.

dinnner with the astor kids : Dark and youthful in the glass. This started off with a terrible bottle stink of sour meat and camphor which it never entirely lost. Round and very well integrated with chunky fruit and seamless structure but inelegant. Spicy and slightly bitter midpalate is uncommonly rich with deep leathery, earthy fruit and a roasted meaty edge that leads to a mouthwatering finish. Perhaps at a difficult point in it';s evolution but a bit of a …
