Casadei Sogno Mediterraneo Toscana IGT

Big, rich and sweeter than the Cabernet Franc which I also sampled. Frankly this wine is another modern version of the region. I suppose they are successful with these red blends, but I prefer that a regional wine be expressed. This was mainly Syrah but I can almost sense Mourvèdre in this.

A modern expression of the region in Tuscany. I get aromatics of macerated plums and some hint of cedar wood. In mouth I get a rich and medium viscous juice with slight cherry, plum skin and slight worn leather. The mid palette reveals complex notes of spice, a bit of cinnamon, and a burned wood finish. The wine is approachable now.

The winery rep (Lorenzo Casadei) described this as their best seller. I suspected Cab Franc as a major component based on the roasted green pepper. I was fine with that for CF but less so when I learned that it was 60% syrah and the rest grenache and mourvedre, and a dill note (like American oak) got more obtrusive as it sat in the glass. 85% Syrah, with Grenache and Mourvedie (that how it comes out). Demeter certified. Light earth and barnyard, but aside from that a decidedly modern approach. there's some roasted bell pepper aromas, i'm fine with it, but can't imagine it's always well received 20% new french oak, 12-14m.
