concentrated and showing a b it one dimensional in a strong lead/graphite core. I think this will uncoil and be amazing, but others thought this was not heading in the right direction

Pale garnet color. Incredible smell. Cedar, cherry, tobacco, oak, leather and black fruit. Balanced and medium length. A fantastic wine!

Decanted. Clear deep garnet-blood red color. Notes of cigar tobacco, mixed red fruit, porcini, earth, cedar, leather, horse sweat. Seamless, balanced, very nice. Group's #1 out of 22 wines. I liked it, but not in my top three.

Nose shows spice box, vegetal notes, violets, baked black cherry. Fruit is fading, I believe this is a bit past its peak. Pallet is a bit flabby, very, very polished, smooth tannins. Medium weight. Soft and unstated, but not overly complex. Good acidity. Really needed some food I think. Would be great with some ham I think, and probably a few years younger would have been preferred.

Color: light/medium ruby core -> fully garnet/bricked rim. Absolutely stellar bouquet of leather, cassis, cigar box, damp earth and Ouzo. Once again (like other vintages), smelled like a well-matured, excellent Bordeaux from a great vintage. Palate was a little off the nose but still very, very nice. Forest floor, tobacco, black currants with a coffee chaser. Excellent midpalate and acid, the only place this falls down (slightly) is the somewhat short to medium-length finish. Totally believe that's a function of …

A private tasting (Restaurant De Gieser Wildeman *, Noordeloos, Netherlands) : Hint of TCA, but an appraisal is still possible. Lively and youthful for age, lovely tension between top-notch oak and plummy yet fresh fruit, very nice tertiary complexity, an excellent wine - such a shame. Flawed.

Russk. WIC+wives at Brio. A touch of bret in the nose and mouth. Still the WOTN for me. Seems more old Rioja or old Bx, than Ribera.

Leather, potpourri, fresh barrel, sweet berry fruit, some funky cellar character. Possibly the best Alion I've tasted.

Last bottle of this from my cellar. An old friend. I'e enjoyed this wine numerous times and it has rarely disappointed. This bottle was fresh and vibrant, and maybe even still could have benefited from a bit of time in the decanter. But it got sucked down too quickly to see how it might have developed over the evening. Great juice.

UWS (@ JB) : Red and dark fruits as well as some barnyard in the bouquet. On the palate slightly corked, but the structure of the wine is certainly ok with a good balance between acidity and sweetness and evident oaky flavors.

Tasting of the Utrecht Wine Society (Utrecht, NL) : Slightly corked? Otherwise a classic, mature, cedary wine.

Consistent with previous bottle. However this appeared as slightly younger. Drinking very well at the moment, no rush, however hard to resist. The structure, balance and complexity is charming.

My WOTY thus far. Beautifulnose of leather, forest floor, balsamic and tart rasberry. Balanced and refined in the mouth, with a touch of vanilla, sweet dark cherry, coffee and caramel. Long, long finish. So much more complex and integrated than I imagined, a real treat.

Started out weak, kind of dry and tannic. It took about 90 minutes for it to really open up and reveal its depth. But oh, what depth. Incredible bouquet, forest floor, balsamic, citrus peel, fresh leather. Great sappy mouthfeel, with coffee, dark cherry. Long long finish. Just terrific. We just drank the entire bottle, yay old school 13.5% abv.

About two years since last visit, and it is still going strong. Leather, plum, dark berries and hints of sweet licorice. Some tea and chocolate there. Nice fruit and great acidity building a solid structure, ending in a long lasting finish. The wine needs some time in the glass to start shining. Mature and drinking nice now, however no rush.

Historical & Vertical Alión Tasting (Bodega Santa Cecilia - Madrid) : Wet animal fur. Reduced yet interesting nose with violets, sour petals of rose. Coke after all. Delicious on the palate. Acid enough to resist decades. My personal choice. Good hopes for my Único Pelo húmedo de animal. Nariz reducida pero interesante con violetas y pétalos de rosa marchitos. Cola después. Deliciosa en boca. Acidez suficiente para resistir décadas. Mi elección. Buenas esperanzas para mi Único 94.

This wine has been mind blowing in the past, but this bottle was just kind of dull. Acidity is just enough to keep it alive and interesting, and fruit is solid, but blunted and compressed. I wonder if this bottle might have a very low level of cork taint.

Signs of seepage, cork soaked to the top, and so I wasn't hopeful. However, the cork came out in one piece without trouble. Dark ruby / amber colour and only slightly bricking. Amazing nose with rustic fruit, smoke, earth, and a bit of floralness. Excellent on the palette also but the nose was the star of this wine. Good weight, red fruit with a nice tartness. Didn't exhibit quite the same complexity as the nose, but complemented it well. Smooth …

Dark red colour with hints of brick on the rim. Plum, tobacco, oak, dark berries and hints of sweet licorice on the nose. Medium to full bodied, nice balanced fruit all the way with stronger hints of black current and dark berries. Beautiful concentration and a extremely long complex finish. Nice tannins to go with it and a elegantly dry finish. Still going strong, a solid structure still. This wine is now turning into something really beautiful and is now …
