Castello Vicchiomaggio, Ripa Delle More, IGT

Needed about half an hour of air before the nose developed into a luscious combination of dark fruit, and leather. Well balanced and a long finish. Was a great combination with a charcoal grilled sirloin.

Leather, earth, dark fruit - really classic chianti. Great balance and lenghth, well integrated. Really enjoyable.

Not a wine to take lightly. I decanted it although there was minimal sediment. Relatively closed nose but a very full bodied austere wine. For the first hour or so you need a whip and a stool to get anywhere near it. It softened slightly over the evening but this feels like a wine that is five years away from showing what it has to offer.

The wine had green leaves in the nose that is usually found in a cab frank or merlot. It was excellent wine and was very approachable.

I actually started with a WOW. The freshness and power that blew out of this bottle when first opened was amazing. One of the first comments to my wife was that this was one of the most positive surprises in a long time. I never tried this wine before and only had it on the recommondation from the girl in the store. Something about John Matta having been winemaker of the year etc... There is a superb nose of vanilla …
