Katherine Hall Cabernet Sauvignon 2018 A fantastic wine, and exactly what one would expect. Which, in this case, is not faint praise but confirmation that rigor, discipline, and pedigree still matter in a Napa Valley increasingly distracted by novelty acts and Instagram tannins. The 2018 Katherine Hall opens with an assured calm. Blackcurrant, graphite, cassis, and a distinctly Rutherford-adjacent dustiness glide out of the glass with zero urgency. This wine does not need to announce itself. It knows you will …

Similar to my last bottle but showed a little more age on the finish. Opened as part of a vertical with an 2017 and both were delicious. I loved both but preferred the 2017. If you still have some in the cellar then I would drink this soon. My last of this vintage.

What a luscious wine. Nose was full of floral and dark fruit. Flavors followed with bright and dark cherry fruit! What a treat!

After 15 years of cellar slumber, we decided to enjoy our last bottle of the 2010 Kathyrn Hall. Opened with a 30 minute decant. The black fruits are still driving but the secondary and some tertiary flavors are coming up fast. I agree some other tasters that it has become more disjointed but still a decent enjoyment level. Still bold but fading quickly. Not as balanced as previous bottles but the fruit, oak, and herbal elements are still there, for …

Wow. Just opened, but you can already tell this wine is in a sweet spot. Big bright fruit: cherries and black fruit rounded out with fennel and floral notes. Tannins are there, but nicely balanced with acidity and fruit. Thirty minutes in and peppery spice and pencil shavings have emerged. Fruit profile moving toward dark plums.

The last one of these I had was a little tight when I opened it but the next day it was awesome, so I decanted this for six hours and it was really good

PnP. Mellowed nose of stewed fruit compote. On the palate plenty of darker red fruit but tannins are a bit subdued loosing a few points on layers and complexity. Drink now and at most over the next couple of years. Curious if it would have been a far better with a few years ago...

Opened on July 3, PNP. Operator error, needed time to open up- quite disjointed and hot. Put in the fridge with a secure stopper and had a much more approachable wine on July 6. Beautiful blackberry and plum fruit, cedar and cassis with firm tannins. Quite enjoyable. Have 3 bottles to go and I plan to give at least 1 hour from opening to consumption.

Good stuff. Quite concentrated and dark fruited, with a polished ripe fruit with a hint of liquor to the fruit quality. Persistent finish. Large scared but balanced.

Similar to the last bottle of this. Gorgeous nose and I love the flavor profile. This has ripe tiers of dark black and blue fruit, plum, currant and blackberry flavors, with just a touch of heat on the finish from the oak. Hints of anise, cigar, and cedar round out the taste profile. A nice long and lingering finish. Had with an 04 Cask and 18 Scarecrow with it and both were spectacular.

Honestly, it's much better than I expected. I knew it was good, but not this good. Temp was 55 when I pulled the bottle. Decanted roughly 45 mins. Color is a deep almost purple color, plum with dark chocolate and a little earthy. It tastes fresh yet a really refined smooth finish. Someone much smarter than me might be able to answer this, is the 4% of merlot in it what makes it so smooth?

Decanted 2 hours-but not sure it’s necessary . Tannins have softened -melting into an potpourri of black fruit, cedar, butterscotch . Full mouth feel long long finish. Not past it’s prime by any means but I’d recommend drinking over the next year. Paired beautifully with cumin /Dijon baked pork chops .

Really enjoyed this wine. I am surprised it drank very well without decanting unlike some other 2018s I've had recently. A good balance of fruit and tannin, with a really great mid-palate which I think is the standout for this wine. I find the acidity to be on the lower end but not a bad thing as the structure and tannin balances the wine very nicely. Very easy drinking and approachable, and you can definitely taste the quality.

I was impressed that this bottle had so much life left. Note of black raspberry, blueberry, vanilla, mint. Tannins were soft. Perhaps dry hay but not must or wet leaves. This wine was super enjoyable, and I wish I had more 2006 left. Drink now.

Past its finest days. An earlier core of currant and roasted herbs still lingers, but now enveloped in customary attributes of age -- prune, leather, butterscotch.

Deep dark purple. Drinking extremely well now. Robust black fruit with a hint of oak. Opened 30 minutes before serving, drank over 90 minutes. Wine softened out over time. Initial sips had a trace of a bitter note that dissipated quickly. Like many of the 2005 Napa cabs that I have had, this wine is very pleasant and smooth, however the finish is shorter than other vintages and the complexity of the best vintages is lacking.

A beautiful wine - lighter than the normal Napa wines. The nose was full of sweet light red fruit along with a lingering herb - maybe sage. The pallet was full of ripe red cherry fruit and some darker black cherry flavors. The finish was spectacular with soft tannins and a nice acid blast that lingers forever! Absolutely so good!

Kathryn Hall Cabernet Vertical 2008-2020 presented by Kathryn Hall (Joe’s Seafood - Chicago) : 97% Cabernet Sauvignon 2% Merlot 1% Petit Verdot 20m, 70% new French oak Extremely polished, but also a little VA to salt it. Light sediment. Wonderfully harmonious aromas. Most complexity of the line-up so far. Modest tannin. Freshness. Fruit of the aromas, doesn’t entirely follow to the palate.

Bold and tannins still holding and gripping well. 7.5/10. Feels like 20 months of new French oak but I have no idea. When unveiled (by comparison) when I have had this previously, it was too acidic and aggressive. (I.e. too young) Light nose. Very light cassis. The 17 years has done this well. Beautifully balanced. Oaky with hints of bark and some good yet not overpowering acidity in the finish. Still full bodied. Definitely a positive surprise.

Opened last night. I wasn't impressed then, and I'm not impressed now. Purple-red color is fine, but the wine seems suppressed and subdued in both nose and mouth. What fruit there is tends to the dark side. Prunes come to mind. And vinegar. Mouth is better, but still not good enough to merit close to the price. I have had a much better bottle of this, but I can't diagnose the problem with this bottle, or why it smells and …

Opened last night. Saturated purple-ruby with red legs. Super-concentrated nose is deep and loaded, with a nice core of flowers and anise. Very ripe and extracted, but not really showing much alcohol or heat. Well-delineated flavors with blackberry, earth and bramble. Smooth, varietal finish. I was expecting more complexity in the mouth, but perhaps too young to really show its true colors. 5-13-16-8: 92/100.
