Dr. F. Weins-Prüm Wehlener Sonnenuhr Riesling Beerenauslese

Smooth, silky, layers of peach and apricot with just enough acid to hold it together. A little less sweet and syrupy than anticipated. Perhaps showing down a peg from an earlier high. Still, an amazing old bottle and a perfect way to wrap a fine meal and a long-anticipated visit from an old friend.

Cork raised slightly, signs of seepage, cork was soaked through. Deep tawny color. Beautiful nose, but muted palate. Did open up a bit with air and still drinkable, but not showing how it should.

Impressive dark golden color. Slate and minerals right from the start and slowly turned into flower, apricot and honey. Perfect balance of sweetness and acidity and you just want another sip. Paired with '76 d'Yquem for the night and this is an easy win for me.

(AP #25) Spices on the nose with a menthol-spearmint thing, pear-apple (Laurent said 'dry apricot'), brulee. Medium bodied - this clearly doesn't have the intensity or richness of previous bottles that I've had - it has lost a step or two. Apricot-apple, spice, soft finish. Very sweet. Nice, but not what it should be. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 4.5/6, Je ne Sais Quoi - 1/2 = 16/20.

Fresh, minty, amazing precision.

Acker BYO 2011 (Tribeca Grill) : Gentle and great on the nose: huge and wide with spices, pear, apple and apricot. Wonderful purity on the palate - sweet honey, apple, spice, but a touch soft. Gentle and transcendent - spice, apricot and apple. Just beautiful. Nose - 5.5/6, Palate - 5/6, Finish - 6/6, Je Ne Sais Quoi - 2/2 = 18.5/20.

Fully developed. Sweet and luscious aromas of toffee apple, candied peel and honey. Big flavours with a viscosity that could boost the compression in any ailing old engine. This is a grand old “sweety” that was a treasure to drink.It still had the faintest hint of acidity on the finish holding everything together.
