Il Poggione, Brunello di Montalcino

Wine was stored climatized, PnP. IMHO ready, medium bodied, elegant and very enjoyable. I am not at all a Brunello expert, but this bottle convinced me that Brunellos can compete with high rank Bordeaux.

Had this off the list at Rocco’s in Lisbon - Il Poggione is a consistent performer in Brunello, and this vintage is no exception. More red fruit than black on the nose, and for such a young wine, this is already expansive on the palate. I did not buy this on release, a decision that I am regretting tonight 🍷

Nice nose with black cherries and earth. Energetic, fresh and so balanced, with excellent fruit. A pretty long finish with plenty of tannins and structure, also sweet fruit, but brunello often carries sangioveses acidity with grace. On the young side, but also more energetic than a more mature Poggione can deliver.

This pours medium ruby in the glass. The nose quite mute, grudgingly showing cherry, rosemary, dry rocky soil, light rubbery reduction, and toasted hazelnut. The palate enters on the bright cherry fruit with firmly structured medium plus tannin and medium plus acid. The finish goes pleasantly bitter, yet is ultimately clipped by the structure. Thanksgiving. No detailed notes but think drank beautifully. The tannins are now pretty well integrated and the wine is elegant. Don't think it will get better, but certainly should hold for at least 2-3 years

Started slow but after a couple of hours of air, it sprang to life like a gazelle. Still has lots of cellaring potential ahead and this could easily raise a point or two in time. Beautiful earthy, concentrated and smokey wine. A fine example of a well made Brunello.

I decanted this for 30 minutes, back in the bottle where it sat for probably a few hours prior to drinking it. Nice vibrant red fruit, Cherry, hints of earth and a beautiful perfumed red fruited nose. Lots of structure here and I think if you are going to drink this now you best decant. There is lots of potential but it was tasty last night for sure.

Tim Heaton recommends 8-13 years before drinking these. For me this isn’t ready yet. Also after 2 hrs slo ox and 1 hr decant. Maybe 13 years is right in this case. Still tight with forward acidity, gripping tannins, etc. For now 89-90.

The flavor improved significantly over the course of an hour, developing a richer and more complex profile. It exhibited a fairly high level of acidity, which contributed to its lively taste. Of course, the wine paired exceptionally well with pizza.

Opened 3+ hours ahead. Dark fruit, earth and spice on the nose. Plenty of dark fruits, earth and beautiful minerality on the palate. Medium plus acid and tannins frame this wine beautifully. This is the last of 4 bottles, 3 of which were excellent and had years to go while one was on a gentle decline. Great bottle, solid 93 points.

Old school Brunello with so much to give. Red fruits, sage, fines herbs and cigar box flavors. Some reduction on opening so needs air right now, similar to how the 2016 was when i tried it young but I find the 2019 is much more open and giving at this stage. This might close soon but I don't think the odds are high on that, seems already so silky.

Drank with friends but didn’t have a decanter handy.. in half hour or so evolved beautifully with a nose of flowers and spice with layers of red and black fruit and an incredible long finish! Would drink it again happily!

Decanted just before dinner. I think this could benefit from another year or so in the cellar, as it improved over dinner. Nice now with upside.

Bottle with perfect cork and fill level, opened 2 hours in advance. Starts mainly dark fruited, gets with air first balsamic notes and more intense tertiary notes as longer the evening lasts. On the palate melted tannin but still good freshness and superb mouthfeel and length. Did a big step up compared with the bottle we had 28 months ago, for me at the peak of its maturity now and time to enjoy the last bottles.

Just popped and poured. Started dinner with mushrooms and some burrata with bread and this wine is stellar beyond my expectations. Exceptional balance, good backbone with a pleasant medium finish. When the pasta with gravy arrived we really enjoyed this wine even more. Cheers

I used to believe Il Poggione Brunello needed more time in the bottle than its peer group. Recent vintages have proved this wrong. Enjoyed this straight out of the bottle and it is showing the strength and beauty of the 2019 vintage in Tuscany.

Magnificent. Seems perfectly poised now with the primary black cherry aromas accompanies by faint sweet tobacco and liquorice. Think this has plenty of life in but I will be cracking open more of these. A step change from my last bottle which was about 3 years ago…

Deep maroon in colour. Nose of red cherries, redcurrant, cranberries. Medium bodied wine with a palate of crunchy red cherries, cranberry juice, and tobacco. Structured tannins towards the end of the palate. It has a refreshing quality to it, complements well with a rich meal. Ready to drink now.

Medium body that starts with dark cherries and cassis that fades into smoke and tobacco and finishes with a nice, balanced acidity.

Punches above is weight. Black Cherries, cassis, earth, some tobacco. Right out of the bottle! Tannins are grippy out of the bottle. I was hoping to detect Violets. It's a vv good wine still, especially for the price. Med+ acidity Finish med Intensity med+ Alcohol is on the higher side. Bottle ox it for 30 + minutes.

Beautiful wine even in this early stage. Has a long-term potential. Notes of tobacco, red and black couilis as well as some dried ash. Earthiness and tight tannins initially. Give it time to open up and it’s a lovely bouquet. I think this is better than their Riserva and drinkable now

Had from half bottle Perfumed, Black & red cherry, some raspberry some herbal aromas (like dried basil), smoke, some baking spice, some more meaty / bloody characteristics. Initially high acid, pleasant and very present somewhat drying tannins. Would not at all have put this at 15% ABV. Medium body, and a long finish. This will still develop nicely, and I may be tempted to get some more.

Popped and poured at a party. not as good as previous vintages but I thought it was solid+ and has years to run. Riper than others with oak more prominent. Dark cherries, tobacco with an earthy finish and a hint of licorice.
