Deeper golden color than I would have expected - seems somewhat advanced at only five years of age. The vintage showed itself in the best possible ways - concentration and length - and avoided excessive heaviness and alcohol. Cracking this on a night where I was tired and distracted reminded me that the best Chenin from the Loire are challenging wines that demand the taster's attention. Fortunately the quality of the wine perked me up - it would not be …

Much better now than this was the first time I had it a few years ago, or maybe just a better bottle. The fruit is really bright and crisp, if not bone-dry then pretty close to it. It has that crystalline texture I love about this wine when it's in the zone, like it's spackled with quartz. There is actually a fatness to the fruit despite its freshness and angular feel - a lot of material went into this so …

Pronounced nose of lanolin, apple and pear. Fairly aggressive acidity when first opened but it softens an hour or so after opening and becomes well balanced. Dry. Lingering finish.

Aromas of baked apple and pithy citrus fruit. Really good balance between the baked lemon fruit, more powerful, sweeter honeyed character on the middle and the long creamy finish. Shows real depth with a lovely purity of flavour and really good acidity. Went really well with my game dinner. Superb wine.

A Rainy Saturday (Weygandt Wines - Washington, D.C.) : This is the first vintage I've tried since Richard Leroy gave up the Anjou AOC. The wine's still the same, and just as amazing as ever. Complex nose of pineapple, white flowers, perfume, brie rind, beeswax. The palate shows racy acid but a plump, creamy body. Melon and pear fruit mix with chammomile and honey. Intense minerals all the way. This wine has so much personality and will do interesting things …

I am with WD (Chris Kissack) on this one. This is superb! Quite rich, expansive and well made. The nose shows lot of complex scents of honey, bees wax and some white flowers, with a bit of pears!!! The palate shows lots of depth and structure. Layers of peach, pear, honey, a bit of slate action and extremely long and smooth. This is still quite young and will improve exponentially...way more complex than the Les Roulliers cuvée tasted at the …

Brought to Shandong for dinner with friends, and we all responded enthusiastically to this gorgeously balanced wine. The oak aging is barely noticeable, as the wine retains its pure chenin character not masked by any kind of polish. Gently chalky texture, wonderful depth and complexity.

After I found myself totally blown away by the Rouliers, I had high expectations here as this is supposed to be Leroy's top site. However, it's made in a totally different stylistic vein which just isn't in my zone the way the chiseled Rouliers was. This bottling has a significant amount of residual sugar, which basically negates everything that made the Rouliers so compelling from a textural perspective. You just get the usual pure apply chenin flavors with a bit …
