Schloss Johannisberg, Silberlack Riesling GG, Rheingau

PnP. Purchased at the winery in 2014 (impeccable provenance ; )). Brilliant medium gold in the glass. Nose of Meyer lemon, petrol, and white flowers. Medium bodied with surprisingly medium-low acidity, and flavors of lemon custard, mineral, and dried herbs. Medium-long talc finish. Really good. Needs a more acidic backbone to be great. From one of the most historic wineries in Germany. Recommended. Drink now through 2030.

2019 vintage

Restaurant Bobzins Bauernstube Morgenitz. This wine is straightforward and approachable, with good minerality and balanced acidity. The fruit profile is modest, leaning towards green apple. While enjoyable and something I’d drink again, it falls short for me due to the lack of noticeable oak influence. A good wine, but a bit too simple and unremarkable for my taste.

Mundfüllend, elegant und mit vergleichsweise schlankem Körper. Der Abgang wieder etwas breiter. Absolut trinkreif, kein Grund zu warten!

2019 vintage

4/7/23 Riesling Tasting (Vinum) : Drank alongside of a total 18 Rieslings, starting from dry to sweet. Extreme petrol nose, just straight Vaseline. Very lean and pure on palate, almost Alsatian in style. Stone fruit and unsweet nectarines, citrus peels and phenols. Good weight (med body) and great acid (med+). Very young still, this will age exceptionally well. Crowd favorite among the dry wines. 92-94++

2019 vintage

On the nose you get citrus, grape, apricot and some hint of petroleum on the palette you also get the same fruit and some ripe pineapple notes but no petroleum - good acidity medium plus - but well integrated and the wine has a nice balance - and good aftertaste also. We think the wine is a solid 92 at the moment - but with potential for more.

Vino molto giovane. Naso: gasolio dolce. In bocca è molto acido e quasi tagliente, ma in bocca ricorda frutto della passione, lime e ancora gasolio. Buona la lunghezza. Appena aperto è molto in your face. Dal secondo giorno diventa piu' ampio e complesso. Da areare e da bere non troppo freddo. Dovrebbe invecchiare meravigliosamente.

Quite mature already, bright gold, intense palate and aftertaste, rather spicy/herby, very little acid/lemon, quince, pineapple.

German Riesling from Rheingau. 12,5 % alcohol. Beautiful golden color. Aromas of oriental spices, pear and honey. Flavors of lemon, pear and minerals. When paired with food, there is a distinct flavor of saffron. Dry. Medium body. Fresh acidity. Very good balance and structure. Elegant. Complex. Long finish with minerality and lemon. An excellent Riesling. 95/100

Rich, tropical dry Riesling with aromas of honeysuckle, pineapple, lychee and an oily petrol. Modest acidity and somewhat buttery mouthfeel makes this atypical but very drinkable. Saffron on the finish with ever so light bitterness of kumquat on the tip of the tongue. Won’t get much better with age so drink up.

Still very youthful and sure can do more years, bringing more complexity and secondary notes. However enjoyable now for early wine lovers and a very solid Rheingau Riesling.

No petroleum. But Riesling is obvious. One dimensional but with a really rich minerality. Not bone dry but nothing overtly sweet. Nothing complex. A slight disappointment. If my CT is updated I still have a few bottles. These will have to sleep for many years. In fact this wine will dwell in my cellar for many years/decades - not much fun now and nothing to lose. Looking forward to check back and see if and when ageing symptoms appear.

Riesling GG tasting #9: Rich and big nose with saffron and petroleum (often in dry vintages). Soft and round on the palate, high fruit concentration and acidity. 2015 is accessible already, normally needs additional cellar time. Aged in oak barrels (80%) and steel tanks (20%).

Yes! this is Riesling at it's best, of course, Schloss Johannisberg is great. They made a Riesling with beautiful complexity. Medium straw yellow colour; good fruit on the nose (pineapple, pear), green herbs, spicy minerality, good depth; supple and attractive palate, medium body (12.5% ABV) ripe but fresh acidity, lovely density and energy, vibrant bitters; complete finish, hint of vanilla cream, good length. Complex green/yellow fruit which is cool but sweet in that weird and wonderful Riesling way, floral with hints of vanilla(?). Slightly spritzig, good intensity, a slight hint of saffron on the finish. Very nice.

Yellow stone fruit on the nose, some tropical fruit notes as well, pretty open, upfront and quite ripe. Hints of crushed stones. On the palate again rather broad and expressive. There is great acidity and again some minerality. Decent length. A tad simple maybe and too straightforward, but well made. 91-92+

Silky, tropical fruits (mango perhaps) and ripe lemons on the nose. White pepper and stone fruit on the palate, good line of acidity and nicely integrated. Medium plus body, almost a viognier like oily texture. Lacks complexity and finish could do with some help as well. Hence not ready for drinking yet. Had with some grilled tuna and squid but reckon cream based pastas would be better.

I will admit that this still needs some time to find its feet (it is better on the second day), but it is already abundantly clear that this is an underwhelming Silberlack. The style is rather ripe and vinous (very different from the feminine and elegant 2013 and especially 2014), and even if there is no lack of acidity, it does not display the delicacy and elegance that is the hallmark of this wine. A well constructed wine with ample acidity, fruit aromas and flavors, and minerality. Paired with a meal of sashimi and umami-rich cooked Japanese dishes. Sufficient depth to pair reasonably well with that range of food.

Golden color. On the nose, dried flowers, fleshy ripe fruit such as papaya or melon, some passion fruit and kiwi. In the mouth, grapefruit, clementine peel, and more dried flowers. Very dry indeed! Somewhat bitter on the finish.
