Decent enough. Not as complex as I remember the last bottle being (a year or two or even three ago??) ... but it's not terribly faded or dead yet either. I think this is my last one - if you have some left, drink up, I don't think it's gonna get any better.

PWS Oct 2008 Spain (@ My place) : In the bouquet red cherries and black berries, also some celery. On the palate a lot of sweetness and ripe fruits. Full bodied and concentrated and ok acidity. A bit one dimensional, but certainly ok.

i loved the '05, which i had last year, but this is not nearly as good. think it was meant to drink young. bought for $5 in the discount rack, so i can't complain. 14% alcohol. purple color and medium+ viscosity. pepper and black cherry cola on the nose. medium bodied, zingy acidity, medium tannin. spice, black cherry, plums, red licorice and a bit of leather. the flavors seem a bit diluted though, and there's some greeness on the midpalate. …

S - New world wine - black fruit nose, pop and pour with distinct blueberry midpalate and black pepper finish. Blueberry muted just a little with decanting for over an hour, but little else changed.

Popped and poured with salmon for lunch. Sour fruits on the nose and some smoked meat. I may guess this as a poor CdP blind. Nice ruby color though. Nothing much happening on the palate, tastes like a bland red table wine to me.

A solid QPR for a $6 wine. High in glycerin, which tips me off that this has 14% alcohol, but doesn't come across as hot. I think some of Castano's higher wines are worth the extra $2-4, but I am not complaining about the wine I am getting for this price.

Color: Dark and Inky. Nose: Lots of spicy fruit - Cherry and blueberry with hints of Eucolyptus. On day 2 there was also some gameyness and note of Kirsch. Very nice structure with chewy tannins and a long finish of spicy fruit. A very strong, serious, and complex effort and an outstanding value at $7.

Nice little monastrell. Dark purple in the glass. Smoked meat and plum nose. Decent structure, tannins are drying and a little harsh/sandpapery and the finish is short - but overall a nice $7-8 wine. Cant expect a Shafer Hillside Select in a $7 wine from Spain - but this is something I'd buy again for non-wine savvy friends looking for something to drink other than garbage like Yellow Tail, Blackstone, etc...

Okay, this is a real value wine worth seeking out if you are looking for a nice house wine that you can really get in to. Forget two buck chuck, this wine has lots of character. It actually needs decanting, the bottle I drank had lots of sediment, that aside, it is a dark, inky, purple color, the nose doesn't give off to much, a bit of game and dark fruit. I'm not sure I'd pick out in a blind …

A tale of two wines. First bottle was acceptable, with chocolate laced cherries, round medium-bodied texture and a fine, if short finish (87). Basically, very good pizza wine. An excellent value wine combining enough Old World 'earthiness' and barnyard with New World fruitiness. Indeed the balance and push and pull between the two make the wine very interesting, especially for the bargain $7.49 I paid (it's probably closer to $6 on the coasts).
