Ecluse Improv

Seems to be past its prime. It has lost quite a bit of the vibrancy of its younger years. It still has good fruit presence, but this bottle was lackluster.

I have not had this vintage in over a year. It continues to be very easy to drink and very enjoyable. Of the recent vintages, I think I prefer the 2013 over the 2014, 2015, and the 2017. The 2017, while quite approachable it this young age, will benefit from time in the bottle. I was surprised to realize that I have not yet tasted their 2016 Improv. Time to get to it!

Still not sure if Zinfandel and Syrah should be blended like this. A little more zin proportionally would be better. (We actually tested this hypothesis by adding some Écluse zin to this wine.)

My notes remain the same from when I last tasted this wine in 10/2018. My score is significantly higher in an attempt to offset some early reviews that I feel do not represent the quality of this wine. If that makes me a shill, so be it. I truly appreciate this wine and the vast majority of the wines produced by the team at Ecluse.

Opened ≈40 min prior; Private Preserve after Day 1 44% Zin, 31% Syrah, 15% Merlot, and 10% P.S.; 435 cases made. I have to respectfully disagree with previous CTers reviews of this wine. This is a wonderful, easy drinking wine that goes well with many foods or is a pleasure to drink with cheese and crackers. This wine is just so damn drinkable - with anything! Tonight it was with seared pork loin. For me, the Zinfandel brings a darker, juicier berry flavor. Yet it is so well balanced. I fear I'm going to have to get more! Great Q/P/V!

This is such a food-friendly blend. Mark grilled Santa Maria style tri-tip with a really zesty rub and this wine held its own with all of that spice. Specific tasting notes... not so much. I was quite distracted by the view from the deck out over the Pacific Ocean at La Jolla!
