Gorgeous wine. Kept in controlled cellar conditions since purchase. Perfect cork. Deep red with almost no bricking at the edge. Remarkable. A silken, complex, matured GW Shiraz. A terrific example of the best of the regional style. Good bottles will easily see out 5+ more years.

Festival of Phil (Phil's place, Putney, Sydney) : From Coravin. Meaty, savoury, slightly sour smelling red over black fruits, a little pepper and leather. Fruit is almost a little jubey on the palate, black hued with chalky, drying, grainy tannins, then swing by but the fruit, assisted by the alcohol, persists and carries long. Nice.

Appearance: dark cherry core, ruby rim. Not tawny but a hint of age starting to show. Nose: blackberry, blue fruit and sweet oak (but the oak is not dominant). Graphite, baking spices, dark chocolate, black olive and a whiff of aniseed. Palate: medium bodied, very smooth. Soft, velvety tannins. Nice harmony and a decent finish. For mine this still has a few years left. Excellent.

It is a crossbreed between a Heathcote and Adelaide Hills shiraz, more leaning towards Heathcote. But it does have its own voice and this bottle did sing. The cork was in immaculate condition, amazing for a 23 year old wine from Oz. Penfolds could have learnt a thing or two from Seppelt. Still beautifully dark red, the outer rim had a tinge of brown indicating its age. The nose was still fresh, grounded in dark fruits, hint of spice and …

Cork, 14.5% alc. Dark, bricking red. Cork in excellent condition; little staining, firm but pliable. Good seal. Blackberry, lavender, pan juices, sultana, and a slight alcoholic lift. On the palate, blackcurrant, leatherwood honey, redcurrant, and crushed autumn leaves, combine for a complex wine of interest. Fine tannins. The alcohol on the nose presents more like a heightened star anise flavour on the palate. Opinion: Lovely wine, with lots of life left. Held up well over 14 days. Next bottle in …

Nearly 20 years old and simply spectacular! Massive dark fruit, glorious texture and exceptionally long finish. Wish we had more but alas all good things must end.

Not up to normal St Peters standards, or certainly not the quality of recent vintages. More 4 square, traditional. A bit too ripe and acid adjusted. {14.5%, cork}.

Every time I try this wine I'm struck by how different it is from a typical St Peters. It's riper, and duller than usual. Some bottles are probably better than others (it's under cork).

{cork, 14%} Still dark, but the shade has the brick tinge ofage-appropriateness. Immaculate cork; seems fresher than July's bottle, and half an hour in the decanter served to bring out the sweet, almost candied fruit. Soft tannins are unobtrusive, the acid is fairly soft; it's clearly mature and ready to drink. Medium-bodied, no more; seems a bit simple although it was drunk on a hot Christmas day, and if it started out at the right temperature it didn't stay there …

NobleRottersSydney - 1996 night (360 Bar & Dining, Sydney) : {cork, 14%} {Aaron} Decanted at table. Darkly earthy and tobacco-infused nose. There’s a touch of naphthalene/resin here; a bit medicinal somehow. Seems fully mature, certainly. Something of a flavour kaleidoscope in the glass; keeps shifting from fruit to fungus to spice. Tannins are faded to a dusty memory; acid is medium level. The wine is dry, about medium-bodied, and with a medium-length finish. Ready to drink.

My only issue with is wine at the moment, and perhaps this was an issue with my bottle, is that the oak is just a bit too punchy and throws the wine off a bit. Surprising for a wine of this age that fruit is still so rich, has a nice mellow edge and great depth. Sweet and spicy with dark red fruits, fully integrated tannins, very smooth. Not sure where this is going but can see the definite quality.

Ben's 50th B'day (Ben and Estella's place, Parramatta) : aromas of leather, biscuits, toast, dried flowers meaty then muted black fruit and plentiful spicy notes. Cream and slight vanilla as well. In the mouth the wine has slight volatile acidity and is quite savoury and sour with silky tannins black currants and berries meaty. It's complex but a touch out of whack and on it's downward journey I'd suggest.

Drank in Hong Kong Had alongside a '98 Grange and a '98 LaLa. This really stood up well and was more old world than new world in terms of style. Excellent stuff at a fraction of the price.

{cork, 14.5%} An immaculate cork revealed a ruby-coloured, faintly brick-tinged wine with classic aged Oz shiraz characters. Dill and coconut oak, sweet plums and raspberries, mixed with a whiff of alcoholic warmth. The nose and palate are fully consistent; this is luxuriously sweetly-fruited if fundamentally dry in character. There's a vaguely spicey peppery note underneath; there are chocolate and coconut oak characters, although it's not over the top. The acidity is distinctly present; only the fairly simple and soft dusty …

Drank in Hong Kong Thanks to Donal for introducing me to this. Incredibly deep rich nose of earth, dark fruit and pepper. Lovely balanced palate. This is really lovely stuff and very European in style.

Grampians Shiraz Verticals - Seppelt and Mount Langi Ghiran Tasting (Sydney, Australia) : Shows a fair bit of pepper and spices with cherry and graphite - it is quite similar to the 1998 Reserve, maybe being very slightly less intense. The structure is a bit looser on the palate in comparison, giving it a more open character and even seemed to be a bit more stylish with the fruit showing through a tad more, while still having a feeling of …

Big brooding Great Western Shiraz, huge body remaining despite being 15 years old. Nose had dark fruit and spice. On the palate there was tar, cedar, tobacco and very deep dark fruit. Big glycerine mouth filling texture. Great finish to a birthday night of lovely wines.

{cork, 14.5%} Discreet nose, slightly developing, of blood and iron and blackberries. Initially very sullen, took a few hours to open out a bit, but not much. Low-medium dusty tannins coat the tongue gently; the aging fruit is sweetly ripe on the palate but still pretty reserved. It does finish just a little warm; is medium-bodied, dry, with a medium length finish. Not a wine that shouts, it just murmurs quietly. It certainly doesn't taste its age; whether it will …

NobleRottersSydney - Oliver's 5-star Oz wines (Alio's, Surry Hills) : [14.5%, cork] {Stephen} Decanted for two hours, then rebottled and consumed two hours later. Still a dark ruby colour, and offers a surprisingly intense blast of ripe fruit, only a little beyond primary. Deep-chested plummy aromas, blueberries are capped by a jammy kind of sweetness. The palate tasted oddly confected to me; incredibly jammy, with a saturating fruit sweetness. They’re seasoned with a dash of Worcester sauce; but they’re still …

Drank at Orange County Wine Soceity dinner at Mr. Stox restaurant- Still incredibly youthful and deep purple to black with no evidence of bricking, the nose explodes with ripe red fruits, spices, asian tea, cinnimon, mint, leather and oak. Simply gorgeous. This wine has 20 years aheadn of it In the mouth, layers of red fruit, tar, and still quite powerful tannin. Still a young wine. Finishes impossibly long unveiling the final layer of tea, red delicious apple skin tannin …
