Popped and poured into decanter. Needed about 15 minutes for the funk to blow off then was great. Wonderful nose, fully integrated mature palate, still plenty of fruit, enjoyed for a couple hours.

Decanted about an hour. Initially, chocolate and herbs. Eventually the last remnants of fruit emerged. A formidable wine that is substantially structured and quite lush (perhaps too much so for me). Not a charmer but it is in my upper echelon of special cuvée Chateauneuf (not a genre I’m typically enamored of though.

Fully mature and most likely in the last few years of its life before the fruit fades, this was an earthy, masculine bottle in classic CdP style. Blackberries, bramble, cardamom, cigar wrapper. My bottle didn't even need to be decanted, it was ready to roll right out of the bottle and was a nice experience for fans of this style.

Cork was a mess, but the wine, oh dear me; a cut above the 2003 tasted the other day, this has cool mineral feel, immensely concentrated, lots of Grenache here, local feel, real serious depth. Drinking a point, no upside here, but no regrets either. #Kandestederne

Deep red color. Aromas of black cherries, pepper, earth and underbrush. Ripe, complex fruit in the mouth with great depth and length. Very complex and supple on the palate. More elegant than powerful at 22 years of age but fully intact. On a night of great wines, this delicious wine was the red WOTN.

Drank a lot differently than the bottle I had 7 months ago. This bottle was fresher and more primary with black cherry, kirsch, blood orange, smoked meat, and garrigue on the nose. Full bodied with balanced acidity and tannins that were fully integrated. Cherry, kirsch, and white pepper on the palate.

Black raspberries, bay leaf, garrigue, dried flowers and peppery kirsch create the nose. The palate shows the luxurious, silky texture that comes age, ending with black cherries, Indian slice, kirsch, cocoa and just a touch of fig in the finish. Not as full, rich or concentrated as it was at its peak, instead you find less fruit, but more elegance. This is best drunk up over the next few years. Drink from 2023-2025.

I wasn't sure if I would like this wine, having tended to move away from high alcohol wines such as CdP, and the ABV of 14.5% gave me pause. But it was terrific. The best of Grenache with more dark fruit than kirsch. Brilliant and long on the palate and exceedingly well balanced. The fruit and structure balanced the alcohol. My wife generally loathes CdP but she loved this.

Same bottle reported by LAT {Served by host at superb dinner party with great Cassoulet; natural cork, intact. BW LAT BB MB JEL} Despite alcohol > 15.5%, not even a touch hot. Superb balance of fruit, soil, exotic kirsch and resolved tannins. A wow wine. Gorgeous. Some garrigue, quite powerful and dense yet ... light on its feet somehow. Notes of raspberry, kirsch, earth minerals and a touch of olive on the nose. Sexy integrated palate of raspberry liqueur with tannins totally integrated. Wine is slightly past its peak but still going strong and vibrant. Can last but drinking so well now.

Opened this birth year wine for my daughters 21st birthday. It was a pristine cork that I got out with ease with my wine key Pnp with aromas of figs, chocolate, and roasted meat on the nose. Tastes of cherry, garrigue, and pepper on the palate. Very tertiary but some fruit came out with time in the glass. Fully integrated and was a pleasure to drink. Maybe a few years past peak, but definitely not on the downhill.

From a well-stored bottle with perfect cork and fill. Medium garnet with some bricking in evidence. The nose was dominated by prune at first which receded over a couple of hours to deliver more garrigue and spice notes. The palate pretty much followed suit until about the 3 hour mark when the wine rapidly became disjointed and an unpleasant medicinal alcohol flavour and aroma took over. Disappointing. I expected to hate this wine. I was right - I did hate it, but for different reasons than expected. It was not oaky or overly extracted or what I'd normally call spoofed. It smelled exactly like hot vintage grenache, though, with an emphasis on prunes and roasted, bruised ones at that, and raisins. To us, it also lacked tension and the structure was diminishing. 2001 Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Restaurant Waldhorn, Kirchheim, Germany) : Popped and poured. Deep garnet color. Nose with lots of concentrated, fresh red fruit, graphite, tar. Very dense and deep. On the palate fresh and young, fine tannin, beautiful texture and stylistically a bit different from the other wines we had this evening. Some freaky notes, that I could not grasp. Very long. Beautiful wine at its full peal. 93-94

One off (hard to price individual bottles, but probably around $70) from a large, private party purchase in Fall 2020. On the nose and palate, sweet black cherries, black currants, dark berries, rhubarb, figs, plums, prunes, cigar box, medicine chest, dark chocolate, caramel, dark roast coffee, garrigue, earthy minerality, forest floor, Xmas spice cake, kalamata olives, a moderate dose of funk, and frogs, snails, puppy dog tails and just about anything you might find in a wine or anywhere else. …

Right out of the bottle this showed a hint of prunes on the nose, which I strongly dislike in a wine, but with savory darker fruits and olive on the palate that saved it. As it got more air in glass the pruniness emerged further, along with milk chocolate. Not my thing, though some of my fellow tasters appreciated it more than me. Still dining outside in MN October (St. Genevieve) : I see that I loved this wine a year ago. Tonight it was less exciting. Chocolate, deep red fruit and very powerful. I wouldn't have guess this as 2001 but it makes sense that its a Mon Aieul.

Mixed WTDS: AKA "Bring a Nice Bottle" (St. Genevieve, Mpls, MN) : Very dark red color. PNP, drank a glass over 2 hours. I've really enjoyed this wine in the past, but this bottle just didn't have the complexity or brightness of the others. I suspect that this likely had some storage issues along the way. Deep olive tapenade nose, baked dark fruits, chocolate, deep garrigue character, rich and concentrated. Score withheld, impression 91ish.

Humongous, fully mature CdP. Complex dark aromas: dried black fig, roast beef, cigar, dark chocolate, caramel. Velvety texture until big tannins kick in. Adequate acidity. Drink now.

Black fruit, bramble, pine, earth, black forest cake, some tertiary flavors, finishes long on mostly pillowy tannins with some acidity to provide a bit of uplift. Very well integrated, with a wonderful flow from front to back.
