From a three bottle lot purchased at Tannine & Cuisine in Belgium in 2010. Screwcap. The rarest and arguably the best wine of this estate, from a 0.1 hectare plot in the Mittelheimer St. Nikolaus, vines planted in 1954. Full malo, extended lees ageing in neutral oak. Last tasted in 2015, when I thought that it was very rich and impressive but that it would not necessarily last very long. The first taste at cellar temperature confirmed this impression; full …

Rich colour, lively appearence; complex and deep nose, spices and earth, honey and grapefruit, lime and herbs; the palate is rich and ripe, with real old-vine creaminess, mineral energy and tension, ripe but lively acidity, relatively light flavours, bitters from the skin maceration have been resolved; good length (only). One bottle left; I will not keep it too long. On the second day, it has become quite oxidative, on the nose in particular. Definitely not a long-haul wine.

From Kühn oldest vines (80 years) in the heart of the Mittelheimer St. Nikolaus. Fullish colour; deep and honeyed nose, mature, peach and apricot, bitters from ths skins, mineral and pure, floral topnotes; on the palate ripe and rich, concentrated and powerful (13.5% ABV) but with a lovely balance, ripe and juicy acidity; excellent length, Alpine herbs. An uncompromising but very attractive wine, drinking well now, perhaps not for the long term?

A private dinner (Restaurant Lorenz Adlon Esszimmer **, Berlin, Germany) : The customary impressive colour; initially very closed but opens up gradually in the decanter and as it warms up; very deep, ripe grapes rather than honey, very pure, minerals and earth, perfumed floral top notes; on the palate rich and harmonious with wonderfully integrated acidity, good stuffing and silky texture, relatively little but noticeable bitters from the maceration on the skins, a ripe and vibrant style, calm and intense; …
