Disappointing. Three hour decant. Dense, monolithic. Over time prune-y notes became prominent. Last two glasses went into refrigerator as cooking wine.

Absolutely terrific. This has the hallmark of a world class Napa cab: incredible density of fruit on the nose. The red and black fruits here are as pure as day—accentuated by the perfect kiss of oak, despite the two decades of age. Finish here is long and glorious, though slightly more reliant on the heat (15.6%!) than I’d like. Easily one of the best wines I’ve had all year. Open now; after a three hour decant the nose became dominated …

Very good richness but also balanced and finessed in the context of young napa. It would have benefitted from a 2-3 hour of decanting.

TOP SHELF WINE WEEKEND : Initially angular (surprisingly for a Colgin) and displaying some heat and bite, luckily this IX doesn’t take long before it settles into a more comfortable glide. Tertiary flavors of leather, sherry, dusty spice, and tilled earth mix well with darker and deeper red and black cherry and licorice notes. There is distinguishing balance, as well as a well-defined push-pull of a succulent and saturated fruit core and a notable grip on the overall execution. Not …

Wild and Crazy Memorial Weekend - Sunday (Chris' Castle aka Melissa's Manor) : Wow....that was my first impression after following the 2004 Colgin Herb Lamb with this wine. Only a year younger, but more complex and still way too young! If you enjoy robbing the wine cradle, then this wine will be right up your alley now. Yes, I mean you, Prison King.....and Chris :) 2005 Colgin IX - See sfwinelover1 for bottle treatment. This is a nice wine, very …

Memorial Day Weekend, Day 2: The Great Gatsby : Dark red intense fruits, deep earth and a little too much heat (possibly really sharp oak). Flavors matches the nose completely, including the heat unfortunately. Still tasty nonetheless! I wanted to see if the heat would blow off but this was one of those bottles that I couldn't get a chance to go back to. Maybe it was just me that kept finding this heat wave in this.

Memorial Madness at Case de Chris y Melissa - Day 2 of 2 : Like the 16 RM Lore, I had a different experience with the 05 Colgin IX than WBW, and again I had this more towards the late afternoon and distinctly remember seeing about a ⅓ of the bottle left. I had all the Colgins (with the exception of the 15 Cariad which there was still some left from the previous night) together in 4 separate glasses (people …

Best of the World Wine Night (ex-Italy) (The csimm_M Estate) : First of 2 from an auction purchase a few months ago, and one of my 3 brings to winefest. Aerated for about 2 hours, slow oxed for 90 minutes, then left open for 6 hours during the tasting, with the last glass and a half recorked in the bottle for 18 hours, then given 45 minutes of air before finishing on night #2. vis a vis my tastes (and most of my family's too) this was a touch 'big', but gotta say it was hard to find any fault with this cab blend, wow with beautiful rich but umami-filled flavors... excellent... I probably give a 95 pts score about one out of 500 or 1000 btls, and this hit the mark... funny enough I didn't like this that much when I had prior btls about 5-10 years ago... suspect this can last another …

Tough to score as this was not a perfect example. There was a touch of seepage despite excellent storage conditions. The cork was spongy, but it came out intact when a Durand was substituted for a corkscrew. A robust and savory nose, showing lots of alcohol, and indeed the alcohol seemed to outweigh the fruit on the palate as well. A smokey Cab, with nice complexity, drying on the finish, though, and lacking that freshness I love with Colgin. The …

Weekend at Bernie's; 2/25/2022-2/27/2022 (Vero Beach) : Very big and very Napa. It coats the mouth, all dark fruits and a bit exotic and maybe a bit spicy. New world for sure in style but kindof in the best way (because there is something that keeps it from being totally overdone). Enjoyable and a bit hedonistic.

Decanted for 90 minutes. An explosive wine on two fronts - alcohol and fruit. The fruits are deep overripe and nearly jammy layers of black, blue and red fruits. Some cedar, vanilla Oak, and mocha notes with touches of leather. Alcohol, however, took this down 3 points for me.

Nose of pencil shavings, graphite, some sweetness and more red fruit than black or blue fruit. The palate is dominated by mostly red but also some blue fruit, abundant but silky smooth tannins, a core of some sweet fruit although i did not find it overmature. The alcohol is definitely present, but i did not find it overdone. It is drinking rather well at present.

Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of crazy complex in your face rich blackcurrant, blackberries, smoke, incense, dark spices, tobacco, dark soils. Developing. This is a classic opulent Cali Cab - but is not overdone. It has great structure of acidity and tannin to keep it fresh and interesting. Loads of sweet cassis on the palate, along with forest floor, this is still very primary. Long and complex. Drink now and over the next 20 years.

Drank with "Wagyu" grilled steak and was perfect complement. Decanted 90 minutes before serving. Nose overly powerful and scared me a little (only negative thing to say), but upon tasting this has all the things we like in hi-end cabs; intense flavors, complexity, structure in balance, long finish, etc. Could get better still too. Enjoy.

Decanted 30 mins and then drank over a couple hours and then had the remaining glass the following day. Sweet cassis, dark red fruits, vanilla oak and sizzling campfire. Mocha, red currant and spice with a good amount of heat. The wine is an explosion of power and flavors but the actual weight of the wine is not at a thick, inky level. A hedonistic wine, but to my palate uncharacteristically overripe and overoaked, for a Colgin that is. While the nose was very enticing, on the palate, I found excess in every department. Enjoyable for sure, just too much -- Napa on steroids, versus the impeccable balance and restraint to which I've become accustomed with almost all Colgin Cabernets. Rich, sweet cassis and plum notes, iron, red meat and a touch of garrique.

The nose speaks velvety, slightly perfumed floral, ruby fruits of; dark currants, blackberries, dark cherries, very black plum, mulberries, boysenberries and some hints strawberries & raspberries. Soft, subtle, sexy, dark spices, incense, potpourri, cherry kirsch, understated anise, dark, used expresso grounds, savory meats, fresh tobacco, leather, oak barrel dust, dark rich soils, graphite, dry limestone powder, dry herbaceousness, clove, light nutmeg/cinnamon & vanillin with fresh but leaning withering; dark, red, purple and blue flowers wrapped in soft lavender. Decanted. 15.6 alcohol. Held way too long. The tannins and ripeness overwhelm the remaining fruit. I don’t know what has gone awry here. Some of it is the vintage, but mostly it’s just over extracted junk. This may possibly be the last Colgin I ever have. It’s not undrinkable, but there is no reason to chase a multi hundred dollar wine that you can duplicate for $35 any day of the week from any Total Wine. If you want power …

Kleur: Diep, ondoordringbaar donkerrood.
