Opened 2.5 hours. Beautiful nose with ripe cherries. Big and fruity but elegant and mellowed over the years.

NobleRottersSydney - Henschke (Fix, St James, Sydney) : {screwcap, 14%} [Graeme] Double-decant off minimal sediment two hours earlier. Initially aged, soft old nose of currants, herb, cigar box. Lovely casserole of a palate, fruit, herb. Really surprisingly fruity for nearly twenty. Good mid-palate, no dip here. Medium chalky tannins, medium acid, medium weight. In excellent condition, with no rush to drink.

Not the greatest vintage of THIS wine. But pretty swish too.

Dense, inky red colour. Lovely nose - dark fruits, spice and rose. Dark fruits, liquorice and savoury flavours. Bright with soft, smooth tannins. Lovely long finish. Very enjoyable.

Dark garnet color; smoke and spice and gentle touch of mint at the background; well structured wine . One of the best Cab of Henschke.

Fairly short and drying on the palate. Comes over a touch simple. Still some black fruit. 14.5% alcohol is not obvious. Not a bad wine but less than what I expected from this winery. Perhaps held too long?

From the land down under - Q4 Wine Club (The Apt) : Wine #4: Again definitely a wine with age and funk and a bit of dried cherry. The alcohol is here for a bit, but almost without trying it blows off. The funk took a bit longer (it was really my second glass when I revisited that made me appreciate this wine more). Very fun and well done. The CT window is way off - this was easily still …

12% (Henschke Museum Release: released 1997) From the days when Australia could manage to produce wines below 14% abv. On first opening, there was a real whoosh of blackcurrants rushing out of the bottle, as though it had been trapped in there desperate to go to the Ribena loo for nearly two decades. Two hours later, that blackcurrant fruit has all escaped, and the nose has much more of an old claret feel, with leathery, mushroomy, cigar box notes. On …

12 year old Aussie can with screw top. Minerally stemmy nose some cassis but otherwise muted. Dark solid garnet with no fading. But thin with short finish some cab fruit and acid. Not bad but not great.

Finally opened up this beauty after around ten years in the cellar. And wow it was still great. Decanted for about an hour then covered it grew in the glass and still had lovely dark fruits and a long finish.

Decanted and left for an hour. Vanilla and mint notes plus a solid core of black fruit. . Soft ripe tannins with a lively and refreshing fruit and acidity. This bottle is by far the best of 3 so far and maybe it is just at its peak. Great balance and a long lingering finish. The positive surprise of the night. Tasted alongside Etude Cab S 2005 and 1996 Pichon Baron. 93p.

A gorgeous concoction of blackcurrants, woody herbs, sweet spices. Has matured very gracefully. Sweetness of fruit offset by bracing seam of acidity and austere structure. Perfectly poised.

Langton's Classification Tasting (Carraigeworks, Sydney) : Meaty, with earth and some eucalyptus. The palate has elegance to it, while there is good flavour intensity it never feels out of place. While I really liked the wine, a touch more depth would have really elevated it.

Dark red bordering black; smoked spiced nose, burned notes; toasted, smoked, a bit oxidized (?), a bit astringent, some deep fruit underneath with a decent aftertaste; fine, but too pricy for the quality

Sad/happy to finally drink this. Can't see it getting any better than this. Still has fruit but very very soft tannins. Gentle mouth fill. Classic older Aussie Cab sav.

Drink now (with a short decant only). * First impression (after 15 min or so in the glass): Warm bouquet with cassis, fig, damson jam, black cherry, cedar, and perhaps a hint of eucalyptus, clove and cinnamon. Round texture and long finish if a little dry; a balanced Cabernet blend that is ready now (score 93-94). * After a 75-minute decant - it's seems to be fading a bit (score 90). Consumed with lamb shoulder, works well, very enjoyable, but …

NobleRottersSydney - Henschke (Alio's, Surry Hills) : [14.3%, cork] {DavidC} Decanted just prior to dinner. 70% cabernet sauvignon with franc & merlot splitting the balance. Garnet colour. Currants and cedar on the nose, like the two older wines, but this is leaner, and with a touch of brett about it. Still medium-bodied, with fading tannins, but has a lesser mid-palate than 96 & 98, both of which were a little more even in their presence along the palate. I think …

very pure ripe sweet blackcurrant, polish, touch tar, touch dusty wood, touch wild spearmint melding into the polish, well integrated nose; slightly high acid but OK, moderate weight, fine textured slightly powerdery tannins, bit short, easy and enjoyable but no way worth the money

92 points but with a minus sign. Extremely good fruit here. Still a bit of oak yet to integrate and it has several more years to really hit its peak. The minus is for the alcohol - I find 14% a little too intoxicating these days, and the alcohol was noticeable and left a hole in my stomach that wasn't too pleasant. So - demands food, but still would prefer a good Bdx to this for the handling of the …

Had this at a restaurant when we gave the Somm free reigns. I owuld never have guessed this as an aussie wine, nor a 1999 one. This baby was still wound tight. Enough tannins and acidity for at least another 5 years. Dark fruits on the nose. I claim blackcurrant, but not sure of the others. Well integrated oak andsome spiciness. Bravo!

10-15 years old Bordeaux blends from around the world (My place) : Red color with an orange hue. Intense nose with aromas of plums, blackcurrant, licorice, chocolate and eucalyptus. Very juicy, concentrated and intense on the palate with sweet blackcurrant and plum, yet it has the acidity to balance the sweetness of the fruit. Drinking very easily now.

Drank one bottle on 4/11/07. It was elegant and drinkable, but I thought it lacked the complexity and length to warrant the 94 Robert Parker gave it. Perhaps it has shut down a bit and needs more time.

Huge nose of bluberries and all kinds of other stuff I can't describe. One of the most complex bouqets I have witnessed. Huge dark berry fruits on the palate with a smooth mouth feel. There was absolutely no tannins present on the finish for the first hour. You could slightly sense them coming through later on one of the smoothest finishes I have ever had. Left me wanting a little more strength from this wine. Fans of this style will …

Glasgow Offline (Chardon d'Or) : 12% (Henschke Museum Release: released 1997) This was my wine, so I knew what it was. This has lost the intense, powerful blackcurrant scents it had on opening, and is now showing some age and lots of very integrated fruit with a touch of leather and a hint of high tones. Lovely on the attack. Clearly very mature, but with really gorgeous fruit. Very together. Very balanced. Really gorgeous stuff that’s singing on top form. …

Tucker Seabrook trade tasting (Redfern) : Typically cassis/blackcurrant driven wine; always with a streak of eucalypt/greeness to it, and rather grainy tannins. Hmmm. Dubious wine at this price.
