Louis Latour Volnay 1er Cru Champans

Not a big Latour guy but this really opened up and showed some compelling confectionery baking spice; tons of cinnamon powder, brown sugar, mint with bits of firewood, red licorice, smoke and red cherry. Supple palate with round tannins. This bottle came across younger than the vintage for me but showed very well. All about the baking spice today! I would like to try another bottle.

More or less mute on the nose. But a nice palate presence. The flavor of the mulled apple fruit is something you normally get on an over-the-hill wine, but this one somehow still has dimension and poise. I'd have enjoyed it much more if the flavor were less generic, but it just goes to prove that flavor isn't everything.
