Ziereisen, Jaspis Pinot Noir, Baden

From 45-year-old vines. Maceration for a full ten weeks, followed by 20 months in barrique (20% new). Unfiltered. Only 12.5% ABV. Bought recently. Medium garnet colour. Only opened up slowly, and the last glass after six hours drank best. Cherry, mushroom, iodine, and Pinot spice, with medium acidity, mostly resolved tannin and great persistence. Sauer - Ziereisen - Jura - Champagne; 9/9/2020-9/16/2020 (Escherndorf - Efringen-Kirchen - Arbois - Cramant/Bouzy/Verzenay) : From 75cl, opened approx. 2 hours at Weingut Ziereisen. Dark muddy red colour. Vegetal aromas. Fresh, light, acidic, redcurrant entry; challenging acidic/gritty mid-palate with pure fruit but quite rough tannins. This was a surprise after the luscious 2017 Jaspis PN tasted directly before, a bit like following a 2009 1er Cru Morey or Gevery with its 2004 sister. Perhaps it'll come round in 4-5 …

Gorgeous strong sharp cherry skin nose with incredible purity of fruit backed up with sweet vanilla wood which come across as white flowers. Entry is tart and tasty following the nose. Hollows a bit mid palate but a nicely spicy and acidic finish. Very well done. Classic pinot noir.

Concentrated Pinot nose with black and red cherries, plums, spices and herbal notes. Becomes finer and clearer with more air ventilation, the wood is super integrated. In the mouth with a firm structure, ripe fruit, elegant tannins and a lot of depth. Long and tart finish, very typical for Pinot Noir from limestone soil. Has a lot of strength, but also a lot of freshness and finesse, needs more time to develop. Drink until 2029, no hurry.

Color is a light brick. Quite a strong nose of sharp cherry and stony forest floor; very nice. Entry is extremely flavourful and delicate of cherry skins mostly with rosemary. Finish is delicate as well with extremely fine tannins. This is classically good pinot noir.

On the richer side for Spatburgunder, but very well balanced. Needed an hour or two I. The decanter and vigorous swirling to express itself but once it got going it had a lot to say. Spice on the nose along with red/black fruit—ripe cherries and plums. On the palate there’s a nice plushness and heft balanced with acidity. I don’t know if it’s stems or wood, but there’s a certain Dujac-like character to the wine. I like it a lot.

Upon opening this wine (and the other two bottles I've opened this summer) it shows strong reductive notes, which take approximately three hours of sitting in the decanter with occasional swirling to dissipate. I don't have a lot of experience with German Pinot Noir, let alone this producer, so cannot say if this is typical. Regardless though, it has reduced the score I gave this wine. Light colour with a touch of brick. Precise cherry nose with a bit of sweetness and stony earth. Entry follows from the nose with a lot of precision. A fairly silky very linear mouth leading to a typically clean, strong acidity finish. Very good. Sweet, light, but serious. Extended date to 2023.

Bright and clean in colour. Spicy I the nose. Very New Zealand Pinot on the nose and palate. Solid.

Very light color. Very sharp cherry nose with a nose full of wet stone minerality. Precise entry, pulls back mid mouth and end clean with hith acidity and a touch of spice. Very mineral and acidic. Extended date to 2022

Clear light ruby color. Nose closed and took quite some time to open up. Clean, cool cherry. Lovely mouth that grows to a nice tart fruit finish; very precise and smooth. Quite strong acidity. This needs some time. A very clean and precise pinot noir with what is likely a broad life.
