Elvio Cogno, Barolo, La Vigna Elena Riserva

As others have noted, this is tannic right after opening, but has a fantastic nose with more earthy notes than a lot of Barolos. Just the barest hint of the balsam notes that come with some age. A very worthy bottle, but not close to its potential yet.

Held up really well for a 19 year old Barolo. Typical tasting notes dark fruits, plumb. Tannins are not as heavy as I would exspect.

Consistent with my last note. On the basis of this bottle I would drink this up: a little bit more angular than I was expecting, alcohol a tiny bit more apparent. Bottle variation perhaps? 3 bottles left, I won’t panic. Edit: with air this became really extraordinarily aromatic: roses galore.

Very good quality but it needs food at this stage. The nose is amazing but the super drying tannins are tough at this stage. Probably another 5-10 years will help or a super long decant!

Deep tawny colour, nearly transparent. Classic roses and tar with black cherry, touch of mushroom and forest floor. Again, very classic palate, light feel yet in intense flavour with dusty tannins. This is at its prime.

2006 vintage

97 point noise. Could probably smell it 3 feet away. A very pretty barolo. Not as in light or delicate, but more in the balletic, athlete vein. Crystalline, precise fruit. OTOH, the palate's a little challenging now. The tannins have a ways to go. Give it 5 years.

Barolo Dinner (Mathilde Bistro - SF) : Beautiful, elegant nose. Palate is super tightly clenched, with burly tannins that coat the gums and grab hold with a firm grip. You get a glimpse of beautiful red fruit that is mostly imprisoned in a cage of structure. Monolithic for now, and one feels this will be excellent in another ~15 years. 90 for enjoyment now, 95+ with time.

Barolo Dinner (Mathilde, San Francisco) : Red fruited, cherry, a bit of spice, aromatic; palate has balanced tannin, lovely red fruit, underlying depth but not clear yet; medium length finish. Comes across as a bit more modern than Vajra but still quite traditional. 93

Tasted over two days. Didn't take many notes. I'd give the aromas a 9 out of 10, but the palate was a 6.5 out of 10. Lots and lots of tannins. I think this will need another 5-10 years before the tannins even out and the fruits starts to shine. 94

Aromatic camphor, flowers, gorgeous pure & deep cranberry/blueberry fruit. Elegant and complete on the palate. Dusty-fine tannins are prominent. Fine texture. Rich fruit on a darker register than the nose. Lots of acidity on the lifted finish: this is undoubtedly a food wine. And it was wonderful with lamb stew and borlotti. Fantastic.

March Madness Wine Tasting : Served blind. Definitely Nebbiolo and very young with grippy tannic finish. This needed food to balance out the tannin. That said, this is a lovely wine with very clean, pure fruit.

I was not as impressed with this bottle as I had been with my first. Fairly muted nose of cherry and violets. Tannins were smooth and pleasant after a 3 hour decant. Dinner at Enoclub in Alba. Basically brown. Mature nose. Leather, clove, cedar dust, dried oregano. Leather entry, some fattiness to the palate, a rocky mineral streak to the finish. This wine is made from the Rose "subvariety" of Nebbiolo, which is in fact a different but closely related subvariety to Nebbiolo altogether!

3 hour decant . The wine needed a lot of swirling to produce a faint nose. Still quite tannic but in a very good way. Lots of violets tar cherry and earth. Great mouthfeel and long finish. If this would have had a decent nose I would have given it another point. Still, very nice barolo that was my wotn.

Started out with fine tannins dominating the palate but within ½ hour pulled itself together. Classic rose nose, delicate, refined, pure. No tar. Palate is very structured, just the right balance of fruit, acidity and tannins; moderately long finish. Focused, elegant, classic.

Beautiful nose of violets, strawberries, raspberries, that opens up in the palate with more red fruits, good acidity, great structure, and lots of leather and tobacco notes on the long, refined finish. A great wine!

Tasted in Barolo in 2021. Weak legs, medium strawberry , blackberry fragrance, weak cigar box, umami aroma. Medium Dry, highly acidic, strong tannins, high alcohol blackberries. Fragrance was amazing and primary note for me was blackberry. Probably can age longer.

93+ today and 94-95 in time? Lively and juicy, with fine but grippy tannins. Approachable now for a 2013, but it did close down at some windows with serious tannins. On the palate, silky textures were contrasted by brisk acids and fine tannin, as notes of woodland-influenced strawberry, minerals and inner rose washed across the senses. On the palate, I found soft textures with wonderfully pure cherry, spices, savory minerals and inner earth tones. The nose was gorgeous, with lifted aromas of dried roses, pomegranate, cranberry, tar, dusty cedar and spice. On the palate, I found soft, silky textures, offset by tart raspberry with zesty acidity, as notes of licorice, minerals and dark inner florals filled the senses. The finish was long, fresh and understated, with lingering fine tannins, rosy floral tones and hints of dried strawberry. It’s so feminine and lifted yet tense and poised for the long haul.

92+ Granatrot. Dichter,konzentrierter,saftiger Wein. Schwarze Kirsch-Infusion,Räucherspeck,Lakritze,erdig,würzig zwischendurch aetherisch minzig. Recht intensiv,maskulin,gute Säure,samtige aber auch kräftige Tannine, insgesamt doch rund,voller Körper,balanciert,eher warm. Langer dunkelfruchtiger Abgang Elegant finde ich ihn momentan nicht,aber ist auch in dieser intensiven,dichten Phase balanciert,zwischendurch ein bisschen hot in den Aromen.
