Les Fiefs de Lagrange, Saint-Julien

I am not usually a fan on seconds, but thought this was good on release. Didn’t actually intend to cellar this long, but this worked out well. Cassis, mocha, cigarbox, resolved tannins, plenty of oomph on the finish, quite the charmer for a $15 wine 25 years in the bottle! B+

2000 vintage

Very aromatic and perfume nose, reminiscence of Lagrange's first wine. Dark deep almost purple on color. Cassis and cherry on the nose. Acidic and lively, on the lighter side on palette. Very balanced tannin on the finish with slight grip.

Blind Bordeaux tasting. 2016 Chateau La Garde [90] 2016 Chateau Les Grands Chenes [89] 2016 Les Fiefs de Lagrange [90] 2016 Chateau de Pitray [89] 2016 Croix Cardinale [91] 2016 Chateau Ormes de Pez [91] I liked the second, third, and first wines the most, in that order. The last wine tasted much older to me. I guessed the correct bank for only four of the wines. Apparently I have a lot of work to do.

Classic old-school Bordeaux with cherries, green pepper, and blueberry. Slightly light on the palate. Enjoyable for its level.

Savoury, foursquare, minerally and fresh. The pleasing structure is supported with some delightful tannins and while it may not be fruitily over-exuberant, it more than compensated in terms of elegance, digestibility and drinkability. Just how I love my claret. CHP 92 pts

Tasted this at the Chateau Lagrange Wine Dinner with Mattieu Borders at Famous Treasure hosted by Infinite Supply. Everything was going right for this wine this evening. Captivating nose that makes the taster go wow. Simply wow. Fresh and lively with fresh notes that jumps up and down in the palate. Despite being a 20 year old wine, it carries enough weight and class to present a formidable and harmonious finish.

Black cherry currant fruit to the nose, with a good minerality to it. Full and rich and sophisticated. Powerful fruit character.

Deuxième vin du Ch. Lagrange propriété se Suntory. Franchement très bon, une robe rubis concentré. Un nez de fruits rouges, tabac, cassis et réglisse. La bouche est ronde, concentrée, moyennement longue avec des saveurs de fruits rouges et une touche de bois. J'ai bien hâte de goûter le Lagrange.

Ridiculously good QPR. Cherry, red fruit, layers of oak, tobacco and leather. So smooth. Velvet tannins. Extremely well balance. Expresses so many characters of la grange and st Julien.

Chateau Lagrange (St. Julien) visit with GM - dinner and tasting (Raleigh, NC) : Raspberry, plum, light oak notes. Medium acidity, medium body, medium tannin. Bright red fruit on the palate, Open and generous already. Early drinking wine. A slight floral undertone on the medium length finish. Well made, enjoyable.

Blackberry, vanilla with a slight note of green stem. Mouthfeel is medium. Acidity is medium. Tannin is medium with a slight astringency. Overall, its a decent wine.

By the glass. Fully fragrant on the nose, with notes of ripe black berries and sandalwood. Elegantly balanced on the palate but lacking a little more character, just like the Grand Vin. Por copas. Decanter Fine Wine Encounter (The Landmark, London) : Wild blackcurrant, cedar, very slight pencil shavings. Wetly juicy, talcy tannins persists long, dark fruits, simple but nice.

PNP (wanted to see how it evolves). Nice, youthful, nose of damp forest floor, bramble and a hint of vanilla. Palette is youthful, if I didn’t know it was an ‘00 I’d never guess it if blind. Core of dark berries, ripe plums, a hint mocha and dark cherry. Long finish. Glad I have a few left in the cellar.

Wine list option by the glass and quite a pleasant little surprise. Found this to be pretty open and a very nice steak wine. More traditional bdx without that annoying shut down phase that I was afraid of as I picked the Fiefs off of the wine list. Found nice concentration and balance without heat. Got a second glass, too. Must have liked it!

Drank with surloin steak, mini roasted potatoes and baked garlic asleragus. The colour was light red. Smelled like a fine Bordeau does. The taste was perfect with the meal.

There is still a hint of crimson to the medium ruby colour. I like the nose. It's ripe, with scents of dried fruit coming from the merlot, yet it is the cabernet which speaks more loudly with stalky, cut green capsicum and a suggestion of olive. Off restaurant list, Pnp. Not particularly impressed here. Medium bodied with dark fruit, slightly chewy tannins, still a fair bit of oak. Improved towards the end of the bottle but once again my view is that the difference between the quality of the first and second wines in Bdx is fairly large, and I would always go for the first wine from a lesser vintage (say 2012 or 2008) over the second from a great vintage (say 2016 or 2010).

Last bottle of a lot. After previous bottle I decided to finish this wine asap, but this bottle was more “young” in appearance again and fitted wonderfully with a lamb stew. Nice bouquet in the nose and on the palate. The table found the finish a bit short. But overall very nice!

I agree with previous taster, this is best to be drunk up in the near future. Fully mature, bit of fruit on the palate and a smooth and sweet finish. Nice!

Decanted for an hour. Quite expressive on the nose, mature cassis with graphite. The palate is distinctly minerally, almost salty, with lots of cassis. Definitely needed food to go with, very nice.

First experience for me with this Chateau and I’m impressed. Dark in the glas with a limited nose. The wine itself is quite acid with great fruit and a good finish. Already very enjoyable, but on the young side. Give it 1-2 years more.

The wine looks ruby colored. The legs are medium. There is light sediment in the bottle. It smells like black currant (cassis). It smells like gooseberry. It tastes like black currant (cassis). The body is light/medium. The wine has narrow texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has medium acidity.

Monthly Tasting Group EEE Sept 2018; A random set of wines (@ PV) : Ripe dark berries and herbs in the bouquet. On the palate juicy berry fruits, a touch of sweetness, good acidity, beautiful oak and round tannin with still a soft bite. No real hurry drinking this.

57% CS, 29% M and 14% PV. Increasingly brownish rim but still deeply colored at the center. Cabernet perfume, leafy, with pleasing maturity aromas very much present. Integrated structure. Smooth but still substantial. Red fruit, floral, violet, leafy, barnyard. Perfectly ready. Removed from Chateau's cellar and drank during a dinner at Lagrange. Unforgettable experience. 90.

Very good, especially considering the vintage. Decent value at under $30. Good fruit, good character, good structure. Offers up exactly what you would expect from a bottle of this price range.

2011 vintage

It's a pretty good wine, but definitely nothing special. Far from the best of the 2nd labels. Taste like a St. Julien Bordeaux with very little complexity but definitely there with herbaceous flavors. Lean and fairly light in body.

Decent whiff of straw/hay and cassis. Cherry came through on the first sip. This needed a decent decant despite being 17 years old so holding up well. Mellowed after an hour and the softness took away some of the tannin and pepper but improved the balance.

has all the acid you'd want in a good vintage, but lacks quite a bit body and substance. nose is medium intensity at best, and is fairly primary, offering more cherry notes than anything. palate is much the same, round medium tannin structure, finish is medium minus. Needed to open a bit but once it did the herbaceous St. Julien flavors came through. Not quite up to it's famous sibling but there's a definite family resemblance. Pretty good QPR at $23. Definitely will by a few more bottles.

decanted 3 hours before drinking. Decent 2nd label but not much primary fruit left, so don't hesitate to drink this up. 2nd labels usually have pressed wine added for structure but that can take over once the primary fruit of the wine subsides.
