Domaine d'Eugenie, Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru

Hoisin sauce, asian spice, dried rose, cedar, cinnamon. Really should be aged way longer for the ripeness to go away. 92 right now but 93-95 potential, drink from 2030.

2018 vintage

First of all 6-pack bought on release. I haven’t tasted this wine in over a decade, and it is really shining now. Still a hint of new oak might be pronounced, but the complex array of red and black fruits and meaty spice make everything work well. Still at the early stages of its peak drinking window, this has great Grand Cru density and good+ balance.

Pressoir Wine Dinner - Domaine Réne Engel (Charlie Bird - NYC) : From a 1.37 ha parcel of 60+ year old vines situated close to the Château. Slightly deeper red color than the ’19 Grands-Echezeaux. Again, hesitant on the nose, but eventually spicy, black fruit emerges. Much less attractive on the palate and felt somewhat awkward and disjointed. I’m not a big fan of the ’18 red burgs in general and this bottle further supports that opinion.

Very structured at the beginning but lost most of its power after 30 minutes.

2008 vintage

Intensely ripe, plenty of new wood, dense, chewy, long and chalky. Quite over towering, and on steroids. This is a wine that cannot be paired with food at this stage, too much of everything except grace, to cellar for 20 years.

Drank a 2017 and 2018 Eugenie Vougeot in succession, both bought from the same place, and we believe both were flawed, as they showed nothing on the nose, and nothing on the palate. Big disappointment. This was a very different experience as i we drank a 2017 last summer and it was singing.

Drinks like a wine made in a very expensive winery. I think I'm a bit hard-pressed to think of any other bottle of Burgundy that I've had in a while that tastes, well, corporate. Really lovely fruit here, with the bright 2008 character shining through, but enough weight so it's not like most 2008s which feel like they're thinning out. Pale garnet , slight fading at the rim. Medium- intense nose of red currant, hint of musk, ripe raspberry, sweet strawberry, violet, minty herb. Some dashi notes come through with air. On the palate: cranberry, red currant, dashi, oak spice. A hint of sweet raspberry. Mineral finish. Medium alcohol, medium+ body, medium+ acidity. Fine grained but drying tannins. It will take some time for the tannins to resolve but there’s good structure here. Lots of promise.

tasted again 2 years later, a miracle happened! Unrecognizable wine, everything is set up in a great symbiosis between power, finesse, black fruits, leather, undergrowth, mushrooms and a phenomenal length. To wait absolutely to see how far he will go 97-99

La Paulee NYC 2022 walkaround tasting Heady nose. This is very concentrated, in a dark fruited way, a soil inflected wine, Vougeot clay in display, with a truckload of dry tannins. Lacks balance, needs time in cellar to integrate its severe tannins. Will eventually mellow after 15 to 20 years.

La Paulée de New York Grand Tasting (Pier Sixty, Chelsea Piers - New York NY) : Walk around. A very red-fruited character to the previous wines, but more powerful while also firmly backward, so less fun. Lots here, this is a powerhouse that will need cellar time, 91-94 point potential, 2031 forward.

La Paulée de New York - The Verticals (Eventi Hotel - New York NY) : Walk around tasting vertical. Certainly lean but very bright, concentrated, and well balanced. very good now. Surprisingly my fav of the trio, but this is a great holding in Clos Vougeot.

Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of florals, herbs, spice, dark red cherries, black cherries. Developing. On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium alcohol (13%), silky soft fine medium- tannins, medium+ body. It has the structure and concentration to be a very good wine but needs more time. Revisit in 3 years. 2007 much more approachable now but doesn’t share the length nor the structure.

Dark purple-red. Vanilla and dark fruit aromas. Dark fruit flavours with creamy oak clearly in the picture. Some pomegranate. Tannins then close in covering the fruit.

I tasted couple of bottles and the second showed much better than the first which ended up in the Beef Bourguignon. Very dark colour for a Burgundy. Decanted for about 3 hours. Forward red fruit with herbs and just a touch of leather. Wood is still notable but does not get in the way. The palate is balanced and the high alcohol does not dominate. Long.

Chateau Latour dinner at Cornerhouse, Botanic Gardens. A Burgundy, served secretly to "gently interrupt" the Latours. Dark red, almost opaque. Lovely nose of violet and blueberries, lots of minerality and finesse. The palate had cranberries, lovely fresh blueberries, sweet cherries, some earth with a hint of leather and lots of minerals and wet rocks. Good acidity from the vintage profile, lovely balance and a really elegant and well made wine. Almost my favourite of the evening!

La Paulée de New York: Vertical Tasting (Colicchio & Sons - New York NY) : Tasting. Dark color and large scaled fruit aromas. Plenty of pronounced new oak for right now, but with the density and raw material to absorb and easily balance over the next few years. Lots of good textures and energy.

Dark ruby-red. Complex and characterful nose of dark cherries, forrest floor, undergrowth, sweet spices and later, candied cherries, fruit-cake and violets. Medium to full-bodied, perfectly round with textbook tannins, opulent fruit and balancing acidity. Long aftertaste. Very enjoyable already with huge potential to evolve further.

Another Saturday at Knightsbridge - mostly blind (Northbrook, IL) : Tasted double blind. Good red and black cherry on both nose and palate, accompanied by some fresh thyme, tarragon and cloves. Still some pronounced new oak, give this another few years for better integration, but overall accessible, forward and easy to enjoy.

d'Eugenie Cellar Visit and Tasting (Vosne-Romanee) : Tasting at Domaine. Less ripe fruit than the Echezeaux or Grands-Ecnezeaux. Licorice, clove and dried herbs on nose. Same fruit and spice profile on palate with really powerful tannins and sharp acidity. incredible concentration and dry extract, this will take at least 10-15 years to harmonize, but the raw materials are exciting, with huge potential.
