Gibbston Valley, Pinot Noir Reserve, Central Otago

Tasted after a 45 minute decant. Medium ruby in colour with lovely aromas of earthy forest floor, red cherry & strawberry. On the palate, medium bodied tart, juicy & savoury, red & black cherry, hint strawberry, herbal & floral, slightly earthy, cloves, well integrated oak, high acidity, medium soft tannins with a long finish to black pepper & leather. Balanced, good complexity, & very savoury. Nicely done!

Had a glass of this at their cellar door. Looks more concentrated and dense than their other wines, and the nose suggests the same. On the palate it seems a little thinner than I had expected- still there is bright cherries and refined fruit here, but was expecting a little more depth for the Reserve. I was at the end of a very loooong tasting day so perhaps my palate was a little desensitized- will give this another chance another …

Concentrated color for a New Zealand Pinot. Drank over five days. Bright fresh raspberry and blackberry nose. Blackberry, tobacco notes. Well-balanced. Short legs, medium finish. It was excellent the first day, still decent on the fifth day. Put in the fridge to preserve it the last two days. Tried at New Zealand Wine trade tasting, brought the partial bottle home.

[Tasting@GibbstonValley w ShaughnJenkins] Dark florals: roses, lavender, garrigue, violets, lifted with sweet frangipani. Mossy undertones and forest-floor vegetals, “mountainy” shrubbery, herb garden, orange peel sweetness, and tea. A curious and clever “empty” and implied taste, subtle yet complext and concentrated. Young supple tannins beginning to resolve. Chewy, clean, transparent glowing fruit and mountain water (cf aoraki). More leather sweetness later on, blooming with tobacco leaf and soft oak. Complete and effortless (~ 1er-cru?).

(Christmas.Brunner) Meaty, dark plums, funky leather, effusive dark florals. Dark spices, ferrous leather, floral perfume. Meaty sour cherry, textural and dark structure. Rich and drinking now.

Not jammy at all compare with many other kiwi or Tasmania PNs. The heat is much more notable than village red Burgundy. Muscular and fruit dominated. Can't see the value if you can find decent red Burgundy in your place.

Nice well balanced New Zealand Pinot Noir.

Saturday Tasting Group (Knightsbridge Wine Shop (Northbrook, IL)) : Surprisingly delicious wine. Very unique find from New Zealand. Sweet and feminine. Soft but pungent earthy aromas and some peppery notes. Reminded me of some Grand Cru I've enjoyed I say with fear. Soft and smooth. Earth driven with some underlying truffles and meat. Blood orange. Unique and while I wouldn't pay the $90 this runs, it was a pleasure trying it.
