North London TWS Group Does St Joseph on St Joseph's Day (Must & Lees, Warren Street) : Smoky blueberries on the nose here with some toffee apple char in the margins. With air some steak and a couple of ppm of tobacco greenness. Palate is tart and youthful. Tannins more prickly than on the wines to date although we are heading from old to young so not unexpected. Some red fruits but the palate not quite delivering on the promise …

Dark inky blue. At last something deep. Pine needles. Interesting but not as compelling as I would hope. It's only eight years old but I feel it's on the downward turn. Smoked bacon and ribeye steak on the barbecue. Good, complex, fleshy. Just on the wrong side of completely convincing.

St Joseph's Day (Must & Lees, Warren Street) : More than a hint of barnyard here, and I find it more evolved than a 2018 should be. I wonder if these hot year wines are aging more quickly. Starts off promisingly, but it becomes unbalanced to my palate, hot and clunky. Not sure what to make of this. Might this be better on day 2? Not for me this evening.

Similar to my previous bottle, the smoky meaty flavor jumped out of the glass for the first 15 minutes, then dissipated, although never disappearing for the 1st half bottle and the 2nd half bottle preserved with argon for the next day. It does feel polished, but clearly Northern Rhone. For the $28 I paid, this is a win. For the $60+ I'm seeing on wine-searcher now, regardless of vintage, I'd pass.

Olive tapenade, tobacco, black berry and black cherry with a hint of dried herbs on the complex and intense nose. Pomegranate and red cherry in the mouth accompanied by a pleasing line of acidity tying it all together. This still tastes young but is enjoyable now. For the money not a bad buy, hits most of the notes I like in Syrah.

Very dark, young and vigorous. Classic tobacco and berries with a dry smokey finish. Delicious. Heavy sediment.

Opaque in the glass fading to ruby with a thin watery rim. Aggressive nose od dark cherry, barnyard, gamey meat, and tobacco. Wow - there is a lot going on here! Full-bodied with impressive acidity, strong, well-integrated tannins, and flavors of dark fruits, iron, and dried herbs. This is an unbelievably manly wine. Not for the faint of heart. Purple drankin' cretins will be impressed. It will easily overwhelm all but the heartiest dishes. Delicious now, but will easily last …

Tasted this one blind. Bottle opened for 4-5 hours before tasting. This wine was actually a disapointement, but i think it just way to young. Very sharp and tannic. It has potential i believe, but i wouldnt drink it before 2028. Smoky, spicy, and some dark berries.

60 minute decant. Boozy nose of dark fruits with hints of liverwurst and raw meat along with light floral notes. Black cherry, potpourri, and peppery spice on a light-medium body with a touch of red clay. A long tannic line guides the finish into black cherry, funky barnyard notes, and a nice oak frame. Forgot to score, but drinking well.

Dark ruby/black color. Aromas of black currants, fresh herbs and minerals. Flavors of ripe black berry/currant, dark plums, roasted meat and tobacco. Long earthy and mineral driven finish. Full bodied with high levels of (but well integrated) tannins and acidity. Beautifully concentrated and wonderful mouthfeel. Outstanding!

2 hour slow ox. Nose: Earth, meat and olive tapenade. Palate: Spicy with meaty/gamey qualities, white pepper, soft tannins and a fairly lengthy finish. This was quite good for $33. 92+ points.

Pop and pour, drank half the bottle over 2 hours. This St. Joseph is ready to drink. Slightly polished, but has a meaty component and nice red to black fruit.

Nose of black raspberry, black cherry, and wet stones. Fleshy black fruit palate is thick and loaded with iron, thyme, lavender, and violets. Fluffy tannins on the finish with black cherry and light earthiness that fades away in medium acidity.

Aromas of sweet black fruit, granite and barnyard funk. Rounded black fruit flavors with touches of flint and tobacco. Spicy accents on the long and full finish. Very complex.
