I just opened my last 2014 Yarden Merlot for the Purim meal. The wine is definitely at it peak and should be enjoyed within the next 1 - 3 years.

Opened 2 hours before dinner (Merlot braised Shoulder Roast). Right from the get-go, exhibiting a gorgeous dark color, and lovely, complex aromas of cherry, mocha, leather and limestone. Mouth - initially, packed with fantastic flavors of dark fruit and espresso, with noticeably firm tannins. Pours a dark garnet and thinner looking than I was expecting. Our bottle was in English, says to drink at 60-68 degrees F. Popped and poured and drank over 3 hours. Nose was inviting from the beginning: fresh cherry pie, chocolate, earth, dust from volcanic soils. Palate is delicious, so soft and easy drinking. Splash-decanted and enjoyed over the ensuing 2-3 hours, this deep-to-opaque ruby wine is an impressive showing for Golan Heights Winery. With a core of ripe black and red cherry fruit, it adds notes of baking spices, tree bark and violets. Had to revisit this wine. Raspberry, fresh red fruit at first. Chocolate milk aromas. On the palate black currant, raspberry, blueberry. Seems thin at first, but keeps opening up, bringing more oak, fermented raspberries, cocoa. nice acidity level, smooth, easy to drink. Long dry finish.

Not sure where low scores all came from. Very solid everyday wine. If you are looking for “spicebox” or eucalyptus or tobacco or anything else you might love in complex wines, look elsewhere. This is simple, but very well made. Fruit forward in a new world way without being cloying. No oak chip vanillin flavors, just a good wine that all at table will enjoy. It is also a great value which gives its rating a boost in my book.

Ripe berries, warm spice, faint oak, wonderfully full. Drinking with a grilled T-bone, roast root veggies and mushrooms. A great complement. Some similar notes to Southern Rhône, but unique flavors likely from the volcanic soil. A nice wine to have on hand for grilled fare.

$10 at Costco. Like it because it tastes real. It tasted pure with no oak. Great value. Excellent quality, balance, plenty of black/red fruit with silky texture. Left a full glass, about 7oz, on the table for 4 days. Came back to it and really liked it. It had plums and prunes with some meats.

A well-crafted example of an Israeli Malbec, Yarden’s 2014 vintage is generously imbued with aromas of plums, mulberries, star anise, vanilla, and dried herbs. K&L tasting for Passover wines. Brief note. Shut down and backwards right now barely giving up cherry and hot dusty stones on the nose. Palate is a bit more expressive showing nice tight red fruits and good earth. No complexity or future potential to speak but pleasant enough now.

Almost no oak. Beautiful floral nose. Flavorful and smooth. The lean toward sweet sap balanced by a nice minerally midpalate.

This is not a seriously great cab, but for the money it is a spicy, easy-going, easy-drinking red wine that will match with pizza or red sauce on pasta. This is medium ruby, spicy, cinnamon, high-toned, red fruits, and nice flowers. Pretty. Similar in the mouth, but a little more serious, though lacking real depth and richness. Totally on the ripe berry, red fruit side. 4-11-13-7: 85/100.

Strong overripe fruit and a little sweet. Calmed down a little the next day but still not good.

Nice light red. Well balanced, but not overly complex. Slightly too sweet and needs a tiny bit more acid to fully balance.
