Even though the drinking window has passed, it was a surprisingly pleasant experience. Still a lot of "life" and depth in this nice wine. Maybe I should give it a better rating but I'll wait until the next bottle :-)

An unforgettable Rioja. The nose unfolds from mature leather and spice to ripe blackberries and cherries. The palate is silky, generous, and beautifully proportioned. Deep, layered, and soulful - one of the best Roda I've had. Felt like it was drinking at its prime but could continue for a good few years, even then. What a beauty 🍷 Vintage: 2007 Consumed: 2025

Drunk with fabulous steak at Harbour Grill, Port Adriano, Mallorca beside the mega yachts. I do wonder whether drinking this al fresco made a difference as I got limited character from the nose. The palate was very typical Rioja, Red fruit, vanilla/coconut and woodiness from the American oak, a hint of smoky barbecue.

At a cabin in Iceland (bought at Vínbúðin, the government controlled network of shops allowed to sell alcoholic beverages). 14% ABV. Popped & poured. Dark ruby colour. Ripe dark fruit, dark cherry, black currant, ripe raspberry, chocolate, cocoa, espresso, some cedar, some leather, some tobacco, light dill, and spices, with medium-level acidity, ripe, round tannin, and very good length. Medium- to full-bodied, with good complexity, and impressive concentration. Became smoothly textured and harmonious after about two hours. A ripe, dark, …

1/1, good cork. Decanted off sediment (some) and immediately served. Youthful appearance with a deep/opaque ruby/garnet core and a narrow garnet rim. Nose is youthful too with ripe blackcurrant fruit to the fore, vanilla, some smoke and a touch of black olive. Medium/full bodied, quite mouth-filling on initial entry, ripe black fruit, touch of smoke and black olive as per nose, not overly rich on the mid-palate - actually quite soft and silky, vibrant acidity carries a good length, harmonious …

A complete wine, fully ready to drink. Rich black fruit, wood and a little green grass on the nose, big enveloping palate, very silky mature tannins, long and complete. I found it difficult to dissect other flavours but the overall impression is good. Over analysing perhaps less helpful here. Fab VFM.

Slightly impromptu opening and perhaps would have benefited from a longer decant (30 mins) but clearly classy wine demanding attention. This time I have gone with the Community on 92 but I confess I do find these scores fairly meaningless.

Decanter Fine Wine Encounter (The Landmark, London) : Red berries offer a little raspberry note, sweet spice, tiny touches of blackcurrant, cedar. Rich, dense, integrated through quite drying tannins are lightly textured, fruit playing second fiddle here as well - though not a massive surprise as it's only a year older.

At the winery. This has a lovely pure fruited nose - blackcurrant, some smoke and tar. Medium/full bodied, very refined with soft tannins, black fruit, long harmonious finish. Already approachable, excellent.

Tasted this at the Rioja - Spain's Overlooked Classic Masterclass by Tan Ying Hsien at Prowine Singapore 2024. Dark purple in colour with faint red fruits. Tannic and closed at the current stage. Was told that this wine was made in the modernist style and uses French oak.

Young and served a tad cool at Char in La Caleta but there is clear and obvious potential here. Distinctly Rioja where 2018 is apparently producing full on wines with a great deal of oomph. Lovely to see where this will be in five years.

Rioja - Winery Visits - November 2023 : Full, dark ruby color, with bright tones. Darker and more brooding on the nose, showing black currant, plum, leather, violets, mushroom and anise. Black fruit on the palate, very elegant, with secondary integration of black tea, iron, five spice, and hints of blood orange highlighting in the acidity. Refined and expansive on the middle palate, with fine sinewy tannins and full length.

Dark ruby in color with a reddish rim. Complex nose with lots of fruits, and dry and fruit forward on the palate. Showing blackberries, black currants, plums, cooked cherries, spices, cedar, licorice, light vanilla, tobacco leaf, herbs, chocolates and peppercorn. Long finish with fine grained tannins and tangy raspberries. This is a beautiful red blend from Rioja. Showing nice complexity and a soft mouth feel. Elegant and rich. Very young in appearance and fruit profile. I did not decant and the wine showed a bit closed on opening and took time to open up. Delicate rioja with a long lingering finish, mineral accent and a balanced creamy note. Ct drinking window is way off; dont think this is at plateau yet and when it reaches that it wil go on for another decade or so.

This is quite secondary on the nose with notes of vanilla and spice, sone red fruits in the background, get sone floral notes also, a bit of an astringent mouthfeel but drinks very nicely, low acidity, with a moderate finish. This is not an oak bomb as you might expect reading my description, but the fruit has certainly faded. Don’t know how it will be with more age but I can’t imagine the fruit coming back so I’d say drink …

Color: deep ruby / Nose: intense, dark fruits like plum etc., leather, coffee, minerality / Palate: medium+ acidity, medium+ and silky tannins, great length, medium bodied, aromas see nose (additional sour cherries) / Overall: I tasted the wine at the winery. It is a very elegant and precise wine which is probably at its peak.

Roda 1 showed wonderful ripening tones in the fruit combined with youthful acidity. A Tempranillo that focuses more on tannins and acidity than extracted fruit, so absolutely wonderful for food. Oven-roasted chicken with oven-roasted root vegetables and sweet potatoes, a sauce of creme fraische and sweetchilli was perfect for this elegant Tempranillo. Drink or hold.

Polished oak, caramel, sweet spcie, a little tobacco note, black frutis especially berries and currants but with a slight sour underpin. In the mouth it has juicy acidity, talc textured tannins are plentiful and grippy though the ripe fruit persists. More than a touch of alcohol warmth on the finish.

Beautiful, expressive nose of small red berries, plum, vanilla and cigar box. Palate of blackberry, cassis and spiced plum with grippy tannins and a wonderfully fresh acidity. Long glowing finish of nutmeg, balsamic, caramel and just a hint of bell pepper. Absolutely gorgeous Rioja and although this may improve in the next years it is drinking beautifully now.

Deep colour, no age. Red / black fruit with a pleasant leafiness on nose with hints of mint but doesn't blow your socks off and doesn't prepare you for the big palate hit. Tons of ripe black fruit, dominantly blackcurrant, with mixed spices - elements of cinnamon. nutmeg and cloves discernible wrapped with woody tones in a long balanced palate.

I am not a rater. I have just bought a half case of this from the Wine Society. My wife is a total fan of old-school red Rioja. I introduced her to this wine, which is lighter and more fruity than old school. It is velvet smooth. It looks like it will be good in the bottle for a good while, but I aim to be through my half-case within 18 months. I see no basis for expecting improvement. Please …

Went incredibly well with our charcoal-cooked duck breast and berry sauce, perfect pairing. Very smooth and balanced, predominant blue fruit, forest, cedar, and some black pepper spice. Acidty was well in check. Supple lengthy finish with mild tannins. While great now, it is still drinking youthful and will give pleasure for many more years.

Slight bricking, overall clear, deep garnet in appearance. The nose was dominated by dust and leather with very light notes of spice, prune and cherry. The palate was superb: fine, dusty tannins provided framework, still vibrant acidity provided lift and leathery, toasted and spicy cherry fruit provided the core. Well integrated and balanced.

Deductive Tasting (Blind) (Rajiv's House, San Francisco) : Deep ruby to ruby-purple, no bricking; nose is aromatic with some earth, plenty of red fruit, white pepper, raspberry, vanilla from oak; palate is medium-full bodied, medium-high tannins, high alcohol, lots of heat, medium acid; medium finish. Warm climate, new world, plenty of heat, structure and body points me to merlot, not enough black fruit to be Cabernet, too much structure and tannin to be syrah or zinfandel. This is a hard …

Serious, still a bit closed, high but beautifull acidity. Very faint signs of maturity. With time in the glass the red and dark berries are completed with coffee and chocolate notes. Very fine tannins and good length. With food the enjoyment might be lifted. I´m looking forward to try the wine with 2 or 3 more years of aging.

I agree with Harley's recent assessment below; there's good plummy sweetness, a bit of roasted meat, slightly charcoaled, stewy, verging on tomato, and just seems modern, a bit tired, and lacking any unique character or definition. Doesn't seem to scratch the itch when it comes to Rioja.
