93-94 all day. Lovely visit to Hugel last Fall. Of all our visits, what made Hugel unique was they seem to reach a level of depth and power that isn’t super common (as opposed to the striking acidity and brightness of others). Gorgeous wines. My first time with the 2007 Schoelhammer. Pours an almost gold in the glass. Slight hint of petrol aromatically but mostly tropical yellow fruits, lime zest, and a kiss of honey. Once on the palate, the …

A punchy nose of smoky mineral, apples and citrus. There’s a fruit sweet core and great acid cut. Beautiful balance and silky of texture. Residual sugar is around 8g/l and alcohol 13%.

I should drink more Riesling from Alsace. This wine was really excellent, powerful but well balanced, tropical fruits, a hint of sweetness and a very long finish. Despite its age even on day 3 very convincing, so maybe even some room for further development? 93+.

Unfortunately the hotel where we drank this - The Vineyard in Berkshire - did not store this properly and both bottles were not flawed but very muted, brown, and verging on oxidized. Shame.

SLDS January 2023 : Smoke, some kero, lime and pear. A lovely mix of aged, rounded fruit and some punchy acid to keep it moving. Really good texture and balance. Gave this another 6-7 years per my previous note and I feel like I hit it right in the slot for drinking. One left and might try to revisit in 2-3 years.

Bottle#2035-2488 Latitude: 48.169001N Mid lemon green. This 13 years old Alsatian Riesling is still in its youth. Whiff of lime, fresh lemon mingling with flinty minerality and petrol screaming its Riesling characters. Medium body with hints of fatness and superb intensity cut by razor sharp acidty and deep salty minerals. Some signs of developing honey and roastes nuts, too. Pure and characterful. Should easily age well for a decade or two.

Green apples, cut flowers, some petrol on the intense nose. Lovely golden colour. Starts with racy limey mineral acidity but then there are richer, honeyed, more tropical flavours. Appears sweet because of the intensity but ends dry. Linear and then expansive. A wine of many paradoxes. Fascinating. Went brilliantly with our terrine. A great Alsace Riesling. Will still develop over the next five years.

Impressive Riesling - rich and smooth with a great balance between the strong sweetness due to extract and the high acidity. Primary you taste some fruit but then the wine shows lot of herbs and an almost salty minerality, which makes the wine very interesting. Long and great finish.

Still young and probably needed to be decanted to open up. It drinks very well now but doesn’t grab me at the price and also my inexperience with the grape but I think it best left alone a few years and I’d hope for a surprise .

Medium-fullish nose with good depth. Quite developed. Dried orchard fruit, apple, apricots, some spice and liquorice. No petrol. Fullish palate with medium+ acidity. Rich, dense, but also a bit clumsy. Fantastic concentration. But lacked a bit of the grip and austerity that Hugel is reknowned for. Probably due to the very warm vintage. Drink now and during 4-5 years.

All the acidity up front and nice fruit throughout make this great with food, stands up well to be paired with strong flavors. A bit intense in the mid palette if drinking it without food.

2nd bottle out of a case of 6. Less evolved, fresher, lots of grapefruit, herbs, hints of floral notes as well as apples, stone fruit, minerality on the nose. On the palate super intense and vibrant, lots of acidity, very mineral, good concentration and impressive depth. Very long. Wonderful. 94-96

Stunning wine! Rich but weightless nose of lemon/lime, green tea, honey, various minty herbs (spearmint and thyme), a touch of ginger that all come with immense focus and intensity. The palate is smooth, soft with good freshness intact. More mineral/petrol and limestone hints come into focus on both the nose and palate with air time; this is still young! What a treat! 94+

Spectacular. Deep golden color. Nose. Of white flowers, honey, faint scent of petrol. Rather oily and richer than expected for a Riesling. Acidity lower than the bone dry Keller or Witmann wines. This is really really good!! First and only bottle, but will hunt this down!! Will last at least a decade.

Had next to the ZH Brand 2014. Much paler color than the ZH. Initially quite tame, with flint, crisp green apples, smoke and citrussy notes. Very much in the White/grey/green spectrum. Considerable oak on the palate, but no vanilla. A little hollow initially. This improved over the 2 hours the bottle was open. It turned much more complex and intellectual, but nerver gave the same joy as the ZH. I believe this will still improve for the next 5-10 years. …

Medium yellow. Tea and citrus aromas. Medium weight, quite glycerine. Again lemon, but a more tropical note of guava, and a finish etched by both sound acidity for the vintage and stone dust. This is certainly excellent, but for more than $100, I expect something special, and this was not. I'd take 2 bottles of Frederic Emile rather than one of this any old day.

only one foudre produced) WOW!! PRISTINE! Very bright, clear and well-defined mineral/lemon citrus character. Lifted, crisp white fruit/stone fruits and minerals. Some lime too. Full and has some firmness, it is very intense and concentrated with real tension and poise. Expect it will age magnificently. Shame we didn’t have longer to consider it.

At the winery. Sparse notes but this vintage is much riper and open and holds more of Riesling markers than 2008. Great acidity levels to pare the richer and fatter body than 2008. Maybe in the long run 2008 may end up the better wine but for now I prefer the bigger fruitier but still very complex and superb 2009.

Deep lemon color. Complex aroma of lite floral, quince, lemon, honey, nutty, flinty and hint of petrol. Oily mouthfeel, mid weight with lots of substances all supported by the sear acidic backbone. Off dry in nature perfectly balance the long acid line thru the long finish. Good mid palate focus of lemon juice, ripe quince honey drinks, nutty, salty minerality, sweet spices. A great success. Great now already and will have decades of life ahead.

Riesling night at HaiSous (Chicago, IL) : I've always for some reason or another, thought of Hugel to be a little bit of a perennial Alsatian underachiever, so I was certainly happy to taste a wine that wasn't. The nose here is slatey and mineral, with some yellow fruit to balance it out. Bright and mineral, though the finish gets a little diffuse and shows a little bit of waxiness and heat. But all in all, an excellent wine.

Tasted at Medlar restaurant in London at a dinner organised by The Wine Society and hosted by Stephen Spurrier. Medium gold colour. A distinctive riesling nose, with some petrol, nutty. Prominent fruit, melons, pineapple. On the palate, it's dry, with a hint of sweetness, rich, full, with medium length. Drinking perfectly now.
