Wimps Piedmont Lunch #199 (La Trompette, Chiswick) : Pale red, almost a rosé, bright, fresh strawberries on the nose. Summer fruits flavours, berries and a little bit of pine. A hint of balsamic but not volatile. Lovely fragrant wine, would make great summer drinking.

Not keen on the nose: it's just too heady with surprisingly blocky red fruit, like something you'd find smelling a cheaper wine (...or from a less heralded producer). More enjoyable and more interesting when tasted, with the variety's peppery character well evident: it's like drinking a Beaujolais that has been steeped with green peppercorns. Somehow the weight of fruit seems greater than the structure can stand, and it's distracting and unbalanced. Although the wine seems to still be pretty fresh …

Enjoyable. Half drunk Saturday and the rest kept in a refrigerated brimfull screwcap bottle. A wine a really like though best enjoyed younger than this. Still, I love the herbaceous nose and balance and the second half worked great with some chicken liver arancini served with a tomato sauce. Shame it's now a lot more expensive, sought after and rarer but was all the same a very nice Monday evening meal accompaniment amid cold weather.

Ho provato a berlo con qualche anno sulle spalle: sempre buono, leggero e speziato. Non guadagna in complessità ma non perde in freschezza. Goloso e irresistibile e prezzo in ascesa costante.

Enjoyed this. Drinking well. Light to medium bodied, fruit is a mix of cherry and raspberry. There’s something in there I can’t put my finger on. Bit tarry, bit quinine, a bit like tomatoes growing in a greenhouse, maybe celery salt.

I've loved this wine... but fear I'm drinking it when it should be drunk younger. Still, it's enjoyable. Very Italian, and fresh and light and savoury - might this be the Piedmontese equivalent of Beaujolais, I wonder? Either way, the glass I'm having tonight, after yesterday brim-filling a screwcap half bottle, is I think better than the wine was yesterday - and I've noticed this previously with other vintages: it benefits from air (and despite the fact that it would …

Some holiday cottage wines; 4/14/2025-4/18/2025 (Windy North Cornwall) : Second night. Still a weirdly inexpressive nose - but somehow a lot more going on on the palate. Deliciously savoury, surprising length, there’s real complexity here. Paired well with Cornish curry and doctor who.

Some holiday cottage wines; 4/14/2025-4/18/2025 (Windy North Cornwall) : Very pale colour. Served with a slight chill, and carbonara. Nose not super expressive, very savoury palate, a kind of tomato paste character but also light brambly almost beaujolais notes. White pepper finish - almost young Syrah but without the weight. Perfectly lovely for drinking with the food, but I found myself choosing to recork the bottle rather than carry on.

Much darker-fruited than the previous bottles, with medium-full body and showing its 14.5% ABV mostly as alcoholic sweetness. I don't know if this is a sign that it's fading, but the previous two bottles were much more enjoyable.

Ripe but high toned nose with red and black fruit and a cough sweet/cherry drop note. This doesn’t really show its age and remains primary and youthful, though some slightly more savoury pepperiness does come through. Juicy, delectable palate which drinks very well with a slight chill. Reminds most closely of a good quality cru Beaujolais from a lighter village (eg Chenas) and lighter vintage.

Very pale watery red, approaching a dark rosé. Delightfully pretty light-textured red wine, delicate, red-berry fruited and with herbal overtones. It's got a bit of grip to it as so many wines from this region do, but that peppery and rough finish just adds to the attraction from my point of view. Simply great slightly chilled with pizza, and stupidly and dangerously easy to drink.

Vibrant, red fruited, fragrant and bright, maybe starting to become a little more restrained with relative age, but the 14.5abv emails not in the least apparent by the mouthful. For a hot September evening this was excellent with an ice cube, and at fridge temperature the following evening. Top ***

Pale and peppery - it's distinctive and it's nice, but I don't think it's worth the stampede to get, especially at the most recent prices.

Un vin qui dégage de la fraicheur, quelques petits fruits rouges et des notes herbacées. En bouche c'est plutôt bâtis sur l'acidité, grande fraicheur, assez bien équilibré, un peu simple mais bien ficelé dans son ensemble.

Exceptionally light in the glass, a very pale red. Light bodied in the mouth but quite a piercing wine with more grip than the colour would suggest. Strawberry and cherry dominate, with a peppery finish. Tannin definitely present on the finish. Quite fun. With ragu.

Very pale and quite light bodied. Aromas of strawberry and flowers. Mouth watering acidity framed with fine tannins and quite a saline finish. Angular rather than rounded. This most reminds me of Listan Negro wines from Tenerife. Best served slightly chilled.

Palest tomato. I loved the nose, with its sweet strawberry and rose and slightly raw hedgerow and spice. Even more distinctive on the palate: copious white pepper, the suggestion of tart red fruit (that in reality may just be the acidity speaking), grippy and exhilarating. Chewy, almost biscuity finish. On the cerebral side, but that's fun sometimes, isn't it...

Pale ruby. This is very light and bright. Similar on palate, fragrant, fruity, some spice and smoke, but mainly vibrant light fruit with a floral lift. No sense whatever of the 14.5abv. Fun but ultimately inconsequential, lovely chilled with pizza. ***

Beautiful nose of red cherries, strawberries, dried roses, gravel, white pepper and dried herbs. Super transparent look. Good acidity on the palate, fine juicy tannins. White pepper and sour red cherries dominates the palate. Vibrant and pretty, especially on the colder side around 14-15 degrees, closer to room temperature the 14,5% begins to show. A delicate interpretation of the variety, highly recommended.

Après avoir récemment bu des 2016 et 2017, le 2018 me confirme que cette cuvée doit être bue en jeunesse. Nez fin mais attrayant de fraises et d'épices, qui se transpose en bouche. Bémol sur la chaleur en finale.

Red fruit and black pepper on nose, medium tannin yet powerful with alcohol on palate. Fabio the owner/winemake says he prefer this Pelaverga at 15/16 abv. But this 14.5 is a bit too much for me, as alcohol is a bit obvious towards the back end. Better served below 16 degree celsius.

Beautiful expression of this variety. Nose yields bright, sweet, red cherries. Mouthfeel is fuller bodied than expected, showing dry maraschino cherry, some floral and spice notes, with a medium-long finish. A bit reminiscent of cherry-flavored cough medicine (no COVID-19 reference intended!), but not cloying at all, as juicy acidity keeps pumping all the way through. This note after bottle open for a day, suggesting that some additional hold time would pay off.
