Seventh bottle from a full case purchased in 2009. AP 003 05, bottle not numbered, but the back label states that approximately 3,200 litre was produced, 14% ABV. Opened three hours in advance, decanted for two hours. This was spectacular in its youth, and then went into hibernation. In 2017 it was still very uncommunicative, in 2020 it was starting to show a bit more of itself. Today, after 22 years, we finally get an inkling how grape, mountain and …

My wine of the year so far. The balance is out of this world. Tannins all velvet and silk, just a wonderful mouthfeel. Very berry, more dark in flavour than some of the more fashionable Pinot Interpretations these days. The nose has forest floor, a bit of peat and a berry touch. Seamlessly long on the palate, full but not tiring to drink. A timeless beauty.

Leather, barnyard, fresh berries, a hint of smoke on the nose. Palate with a slight fizz, balanced tannins and great energy. Terrific!

Light raspberry juice with not much to talk about. Not my wine

Sixth bottle from a case purchased in 2009. AP 003 05, bottle not numbered, but the back label states that approximately 3,200 litre was produced, 14% ABV. After a closed and difficult bottle in 2017, this is showing more of itself. The nose is initially quite dusty and cedary, but with aeration (decanted for two hours) some fruit emerges; the palate is playful and fresh and energetic, especially for a 2003, with good fruit and floral notes, and well managed …

This bottle was in a distinctly uncommunicative state. Sombre colour, mature but lively appearance; dark and dusty nose, in which the expression of fruit and terroir are barely discernible, hidden in the depths; firm and masculine palate, almost claret-like with its dusty tannins, with only a silky-sweet roundness and a touch of spicy slate reminding the taster that this is a 2003 Höllenberg; slightly drying palate but not tea-like, and length is good. Cautious score. We will have to wait …

A wine full of potential. Great acidity, still restraint with aging potential. No trace of heat during the 2003 summer. Strawberry/cherry. Complex.

The bottle tasted in February was a bit of a scare, but this one is on fine form. Rich and big, sweet fruit, still quite oaky, intense and velvety, acidity seems adequate, needs more time (still) to develop its complexity, excellent minerality and length. This may have a very long life; the little bit that remained in the decanter was perfectly intact the next day. Next bottle in 2015.

Dry, raisiny, autumnal, nuts and forest floor, quite tannic. The fruit seems to have gone. Will it (magically) re-emerge one day? This is supposed to be a "Jahrhundertwein" from a "Jahrhundertjahrgang" - a modern-day clone of 1947 or 1921. I will give it some time.

Still fresh for the very hot 2003 vintage, medium bodied, lots of berries. Good to drink now and probably for the next years.

Very nice. An herbal nose, maybe a little stalky but not unpleasantly so. Light to medium-bodied with tasty, tangy fruit.

Opened and poured initially with a Vinturi. Surprisingly brownish tint to the typical red pinot color – deeper brown than you see typically with bricking. On the nose dark cherries, a hint of strawberries and red licorice. On the palate the sour dark cherries continue from the nose with some background red fruits and a little game and forest floor on the long finish. Great balance, silky mouth feel and a nice acidity on the nice medium length finish. Very …

mooie rode kleur, open neus, klein rood fruit, verleidelijk, smaak is verfijnd en met wat rijkdom, goed in balans, mooi gerijpt, niet veel te merken van de 2003 indrukken, mooi gemaakt. klassiek

Maibock Wild-Menü (Restaurant Kronenschlösschen, Hattenheim, Germany) : Still young and unformed, deep and rich, cassis and graphite, powerful, has absorbed the oak well, needs time to find its balance.
