tasting ground official tasting, blind tasting #18 White rhone (Oinoscent) : The wine shows high intensity, floral notes, jasmin, some tropical fruit notes, some green fruit too. Palate shows light to med body, freshness, lemon, lime, leafy notes, med to high acidity, mineral, shows quite a few bitter notes, med finish, low acidity. Fruit is the key here. 13.50% alc

M. Chapoutier Domaine visit : True to the variety, floral note jumping from the glass, a big difference to the Marsanne, much more floral. I am not such a fan of Viognier due to the florality but that is just me. Medium+ body, good freshness.

I am not moved by this, MAA said initially, and it was certainly very closed; tight, almost neutral. Opens only very slowly to become a more typical condrieu with exotic fruit, citrus, pineapple and a very fresh acidity. Very elegant. 91++ #podcast

Bon. Une belle expérience …

Bright, golden in the glass. Amazing nose - peach very much in the foreground, but supported well by tropical fruits and vanilla backbone. Taste is simply sensational - I can't help thinking that this is the ideal time for this wine. Supremely wel balanced, full in the mouth, vibrant and edgy fruit, perfect acidity. One more bottle in the cellar and we will enjoy it in the next 6 months.

A Double Birth Year Celebration (San Diego) : Reticent bouquet of white flowers, white peach, polished stones, nougat. Seems closed, not surprising for a white rhone at this age. Hopefully may open up in another five years.

A classic Condrieu with all the right notes of honey, peach and glycerin, and just enough acidity to match well with food.

Visiting M. Chapoutier in July, 2013 (Tain l'Hermitage) : Some matchstick reduction for start, but with air tropical fruits, peaches emerge. Slightly aromatic. Low acid, viscous palate as one might expect from a Condrieu. Medium-bodied and dry with white peach flavors. Perhaps a bit of phenolic tartness helps to keep it in shape, finishes a little hot. Not a bit of crispness here, but does not lack interest, even complexity.

Floral and stone fruit on the nose. A good oiley vio, fairly true to varietal with it's dominant stone fruit and intense florals... like a lot of ripe vio I found this one to end on a bitter note, a sort of honeydew rind finish. Good typical Condrieu.

A bit tired and over the hill, but just by a bit. Plenty of interesting things going on in the bouquet. Stone fruit, perfumed flowers, golden apple, beeswax, and some interesting dusty-rock notes I ascribe to minerality. It had somewhat of a rich mouthfeel but there was just enough acidity around the edges to help balance the rich stone fruit and beeswax flavors. A very enjoyable wine.

Deep golden color. Astonishing nose of perfumed flowers, pear and honey. Full bodied white wine. Stands up well to stir fried greens in garlic sauce and a spicy prawn stir fry. The mid palate dazzles with spiced pear, honeysuckle and faint herbal notes. So many layers and levels of complexity. Nice, fresh mouthfeel even though the acidity is low. Great length on this wine. One to ponder for a long time as it lingers in your mouth. This is the …

Consumed with friends at a dinner party with a Rhone theme. It went very well with the salad and had one of the best noses of the evening. Other wines included two vintage Champagnes, '95 Beaucastel 1.5l and a 2004 Durand Cornas. Orange blossom, other floral notes, medium acidity, and a finish that lasted 5 to 15 seconds. Medium to full-bodied.

Grand Blanc at Aquarelle French Restaurant (Austin, Texas) : Disappointing compared to two other Condrieus in this wine salon, it had a weak nose for a Condrieu and probably should have been drunk upon release. A light style, it had too much acidity but still had some good, white flower and spice notes, with some melon, citrus, and lime zest. It went well with food, especially some croque monsieurs Aquarelle served.

Light yellow. Excellent nose, very typical, faultless. If not the polished character and exotic exhuberance of Condrieu's like Guigal La Dorriane, this was of similar character but less concentrated and more refreshing and thus more food friendly. Excellent!

Popped and poured, enjoyed very quickly over an hour or so. Stone fruit & flowers. Very crisp, sharp yet rich. Gripping minerality. Great accoutrement to the grilled spotted prawns, the sharpness of the wine accentuating the sweetness of the prawns wonderfully.

Light golden in color with a flat out intoxicating nose of flowers and lavender honey. More exotic than the 05 Perret Clos Chason on the nose. Rich and dense with a fleshier texture./ More hedonistic yet holding it all together quite well. Dense and rich yet not heavy. perhaps a bit less refined than the Perret, but that is stylistic not qualitative statement. Fleshy and pleasureable, while still maintaining a core of stony depth and structure. Very long on the …

Bachelor's party (Imperial Treasure, Great World City) : Very classic Condrieu - almost like drinking liquified flowers. Golden yellow in colour, super perfumed, musky nose, with flower petals and chamomile underlaced with chalk. More of the heady perfume on the palate as well - musk, flowers, chamomile with some honeysuckle and beeswax along with a touch of almond cream. There was a sense of high alcohol and lots of weight in a slightly creamy, oily textured way, but the wine …

Le Paulee Maceration Party (Imperial Treasure @ Great World) : Floral scented almond nuts. Very rhone-like in stylistics. Beautifully sweetly perfumed nose with just whiffs of hot stones minerality. Oily as it is, there is enough acidity and lovely peachy lychees and nice spice notes show. Bitter honeysuckle on the aftertaste.

Wino Guys Weekend (WGW) #2; 11/7/2008-11/8/2008 : Light gold colour. Huge, sweet, tropical nose of passion fruit, coconut, papaya, mango, lychee, pear nectar, honey, white flowers, and orange rind. Medium-full bodied, unctuous, with alcohol, papaya, coconut, butterscotch, pear nectar, orange oil, and lanolin notes on the palate. Long finish, with a bit of lanolin, dragonfruit, and hints of spice with time. This wine has outstanding texture and length that grows more complex when it warms. Don't drink this wine too …

The alcohol in this wine overwhelms what would otherwise be lovely blossomy fruit. It throws the whole wine out of balance. Certainly not worth the money. I won't buy more.
