Antoniolo Gattinara Bonarda del Piemonte

Dinner at Recess (Indianapolis, IN) : As far as nebbiolo goes, I was really surprised about this wine. There's some serious tertiary flavours here, with some dried figs and dates on the palate. The nose shows a little touch of volatility, but not very much given its age. I'm not totally sure if this was made in a traditional dry wine style, since it showed a little bit of raisin as well.

I liked this a bit less than others at the table - found it a bit too tertiary for my taste, with the fruit pretty faded. There's some dusty red fruit at the back end, but it's dominated by tertiary notes of dates, figs, and dried leaves with a savoury earthiness that emerges with more air. Air and food certainly help this, as the fruit perks up a bit with time, but it still seems past its best.
