At WSOD quick double decant and this was sweet and beautifully balanced. A great combination of fruit and secondary flavors -this way over performed and ended up to be one of the finest wines of the tasting. A nice surprise

Nose of singed cherries, minerals, brown sugar and garrigue with some light CDP spiciness. Palate was light to medium bodied with cherries, iron and a little leather. it's been over 4 years since the last bottle and once again this had a fair amount of earthy tones and a distinct aromas of tapenade . Yet over time this has developed some lovely tertiary flavors and a sweetens you will get in an aged wine. If anything this has developed on a fast track and was more reminiscent of CDP's from 89-90. Time to drink and enjoy

Filling in w/the Saturday Brown Bag Group (Rich & Dana's) : Garnet color. Opens with a pungent earthy note. Notes of roasted meat, iron and red fruit follow, then an obvious Mourvedre tone dominates. Tannins are slightly chewy, with great red fruit and spice tones on the palate. For me this had a 95-pont nose and a 90-point palate. 92-93 pts. My #3, group #8.

Light to medium color with browning. Significant sediment. I wasn't sure about this right out of the bottle since it had an artificial roasted quality, but it definitely grew on me over time. Subtle balsamic notes on the first day gradually evolve into more explicit notions of VA by the third day, with an overall exotic feel that suggests some surmaturite. A soupier style of Chateauneuf, but it's a rather light soup that retains its slurpability.

Maybe not a fair comparison to other 98 CDP's I've tasted lately, but this was very thin on the nose and palette. It had a pleasant nose of faint red fruits. But no spice, black fruit, pepper or any of the highlights of most 98 CDP. And I got no mid-palette or finish. I'm surprised at other ratings. We've had 3-4 times and it's been a consistent disappointment from a great vintage. Relatively thin, a bit brett-like on the nose along with barnyard (that's ok), and not much fruit. In the mouth, pretty lean and little finish. I have no sense it will improve. Hope I'm wrong.

Chicago Wine Geeks do CdP (Joe Wu's Place) : Nicely colored with amber and purple. Nose is very full and giving. Garrigue and aged fruit. Nice. On the palate the wine comes right after you. Fruit is intense and nicely framed with tannin and acid. Everything is working well together and this wine is showing off its maturity. Fruit and spice fill the finish. My #2 WOTN.

Deep ruby. Intense ripe red fruit with nice acidity and well integrated oak. Full bodied and chewy. No residue in the bottle, so presumably filtered, though this is not what RP says in the Rhone book. Modern in style, but none the worse for that. Nice tannins and a impressive length. This is a classy wine that is entirely approachable now but has plenty of bottle age left. €30 in Vinadea.
