Marquis d'Angerville Tasting and Lunch (Restaurant Fitzgerald *, Rotterdam, NL) : From Guillaume d’Angerville’s personal cellar. An excellent bottle. Mature and lively, harmonious and complex aromas, fresh but with resolved tannins, steely acidity starts to stick out a bit, lovely energy on the finish.

9th of 12, decanted 30 minutes, perfect cork and level, unchanged from bottle noted in Nov 13, still showing extreme reduction and tinny notes only partially ameliorated over the evening by swirling and exposure to air, hard to see this ever coming properly into balance but no rush in this vintage. Technically VGI (17) but less so on pleasure.

Sadly our last bottle but it was very disappointing. Still garnet red, but the nose was off putting. Not oxidized or corked but some caramel notes. On the palate it was hard to describe as anything but weird. Several dinner mates tried it and all declined a second sip. Our first 5 bottles drunk previously were terrific. Don't know what happened with this bottle.

Light ruby but cloudy as an aged Burgundy. Lovely floral aroma with red fruits and silky palate. Opened in the bottle and drank over two hours. At the end there were more complex aroma and palate, wet wood and minerals. But it declined very soon. It’s time to drink up.

A really nice bottle. Moderate complexity, slightly acidic balance, but very elegant and long. The usual cherry flavors. I wish I had more in my cellar.

Opened prior day. Ripe, leathery aromatics. Sweet, lightly saline palate. Guillaume mentioned 64, 66 and 69 as especially strong vintages while 61 and 62 also good.

Really good tonight. Sweet red fruits - candy cherry, smoke, raspberry. Texture is quite nice as this is soft and feminine yet packs a lot of great flavors. Would say this was in peak drinking window but no rush. Held up well over dinner and was my co-WOTN.

Year end dinner at Jade Palace. Third red in a flight of 4. Deep red, no bricking. This had a lovely glowing look, just the kind of wine you would think has entered its perfect drinking window - and so it showed. Deep and intense nose of dark cherries, violets, roasted strawberries and juicy plums. Very primary actually, but with extended time, there was earth, campfire, leather and sandalwood. Impressive on the palate, with good length and decent complexity. Lots …

Elegance des Volnay BYO Dinner (Domaine de la Pousse d'Or - Volnay) : Ripe red and black cherry on nose and palate. Nicely fresh and well balanced for 1990's typical ripeness. Expanded with more time in glass. Holding nicely.

Red fruit and plummy nose. Medium body, well balance and good depth.

The gig was up on this bottle before I got to it when Sam said: "80's Barolo." He nailed it. Nose: roasted fruit, sun baked, clove, tar, orange peel, funky. On the palate: high acid, deep plummy, spice, tar, dusty tannins. You could have given me 100 guesses on what this was and none of them would have been a Pinot-based wine.

8th bottle from case, 45 min decant, always an enigma and hard work with nail varnish nose, this was by far the best bottle yet, med deep plummy red still quite youthfull, curious on nose and palate which improved materially with aeration to something interesting and attractive, plums, damsons and sous bois with attractive balancing acidity hinting at complexity to come when and if the extreme reduction (which I think is the problem) ever resolves itself, possibly better in 2 …

Much richer than the thin & acidic 1995, but still acidic, although now balanced with lovely fruit. Some cloudiness, and pronounced initial pyxellation/sweatiness. Tears on the glass suggest some alcohol (13.5% on the label, for what that is worth). Latterly a complex and exciting bottle, although needing yet another 5 years I believe.

Certainly overmature in colour, yet there remains a core of red holding out against the broad band of mahogany at the rim. Again overnature on the nose, with mushroom very much to the fore with some high toned fruit somewhat relegated to the background. The (red) fruit shows much better on the palate, sweet and lively, delicate yet persistent, yet there's also a little dry earthiness that comes through on the finish. Overall, still alive, interesting and with some charm, …

A very poor level, even for such age. Only the very faintest hint of red remains amongst the light & clear mahogany. ... and yet, this retains interest, albeit with meaty, even horsey aromas and more than a little dung. There are faint traces of red fruits and despite being clearly over-mature, remains an interesting, delicate wine that was still robust enough to be enjoyable the day after opening.

A Burgundy night at Helsinki (Classic Wine Cellars, Helsinki, Finland) : Initially this showed some corked-like aromas, particularly in the aftertaste, but those mostly blew off with enough time in the glass. At its best it was a very elegant and fine wine with a nice core of still powerful, pure fruit. In fact, considering its age, it was suprisingly fruit driven in style.

Dried red cherries, red licorice, strawberry preserves, earth. This is still lively and acidic, with layers of red pinot fruit, strawberry and sour cherry, with a lingering finish, which is a bit drying, but it has minerality and earth. Striking, particularly on the nose, but may be starting to fade a bit.

After being disappointed by an overly austere '97 Bouchard Beaune 1er over the W/E (yes, I know we're talking '97), I thought I'd give this wine a shot tonight: Deep garnet with substantial clear rim; slightly high-toned nose of dark cherries, red plum and leafy, forest floor. Great mouthfeel of silkiness yet good acidity which further brightens the fruit quality. Softening out but holding up beautifully after a few hours. Has evolved nicely - looking at CT, appears no one …

3.5 hour decant. Red fruit on the somewhat reductive nose and monolithic. Sour cherry with a round mouthfeel and gritty tannins, hints of secondary characteristics. This needs lots of time. Very masculine.

Light and clear red color...and very similar to past experience with a muted nose of cherry and red berries. Lean texture of fruit on tasting and a rather stern mouth feel...even after decanting spending some time this really never opened up.

Light in color with an unexpressive nose. On the palate, still some nice fruit and an earthy component. However, the finish had a bit of an mint feel which was not my favorite. Alright and probably close to its peak.

Clear and light red color with a light nose of dark cherry...austere in aroma as well as taste. Pleasant but stearn personality...that did end up pairing well with food. That said, there was over time a reserved elegance that seemed to come out and as light as the fruit texture was on tasting, it was enjoyable.

Bright clear red color with a rather thin nose of dark cherry. Not an overwhelming entry, smooth mid palate with an austere mouthfeel and finish. Pleasant, and an easy drinker on it's own with a limited personality for food.

Probably this bottle was just at its peak when opened. This was a velvety-smooth Volnay, perfectly rounded, with an almost honey-ish taste. Heavenly!
