popped and poured and good to go. have mellowed down a fair bit but remains very classy. dark cassis, then otherwise forest floor, dried earth, subtle, med bodied and elevated, beaming with energy. Sassicaia from another era.

Decanted. After 1.5hr, still felt tight; another 45 minutes made a huge difference. Blackberries and black currants in spades - fresh and ripe. Chocolate, cigar box, baking spices. Full and softened tannins

Not your ‘85! Nonetheless, enjoyable. Clearly not a great value money wise. Enjoyed but had hoped for more. Red currant, raspberry, cherry, dried herbs and hints of graphite. Very balanced with a moderate finish. Drink up!

The 10 year love affair continues with this beautiful wine which once again delivered. Interestingly this bottle was a bit more youthful and on the fruit than earlier bottles which were well secondary. Still a fascinating wine and great to see that this continues to deliver. We had the hunch back in the day 10 years ago when we first tried it that this would be a superb Sassicaia albeit the vintage and still proves us right. 95 again and …

Not a good bottle perhaps - this had volatile acidity and unintegrated alcohol - disjointed. Medium body, red and black fruit, medium length, some complexity. Better to sell than drink.

Oh wow what a beautiful wine. Fresh juicy and delicious, quite light on its feet, occasionally ethereal, mysteriously complex. I had this a couple of years after bottling and it was very light for Sass and had almost green notes. Since then it’s put on fat and is in a beautifully drinkable phase now. Sass with sass. No decant needed.

Vacation wines; 10/18/2025-10/25/2025 (Hotel Sonne, Partschins, IT) : *** AI generated text based on my WSET style short tasting notes *** Tasted fully blind in a standard 0.75 liter bottle, the 1997 Sassicaia from Tenuta San Guido presents itself as a deep, clear red wine, displaying vibrant ruby and garnet hues. Popped and poured and was remarkably approachable at first sip. Dark ruby in color with red and black fruits and hints of mushrooms and grilled meats. This is in a great place right now but will last years and likely continue to improve. Medium-full bodied, but not overdone by any means. This is just an elegant and polished Cabernet based wine that brings a lot of joy with each sip. Bravo.

Finally, a Sassicaia that I was able to drink and enjoy! Tar and Capsicum on the nose, considerable spice overall. Still has a real darkness for the age it has, barely any thinning in the edges. Showing a lot of the Cabernet Franc. The palate has real silky texture, and a barberry fruit character to go alongside. Definitely starting to show the very early stages of dryness, so might be worth thinking about getting these drunk in the coming five …

Gift from Marco Brunello; tasted with Stefan Kleissle, his and my wife in two different glasses, the big red Cab. Sommelier and the Riedel mature Bordeaux Sommelier. To me the wine tasted better in the smaller glas, Stefan preferred it out of the large glass. The wine was good, had good mouthfeel and volume and a moderately long finish, you could taste the Cabernet Sauvignon content. Stefan liked it a lot, I missed some complexity and tension. Also, I feel …

Nose was perfect. Palate was an adventure — from very menthol forward to grape big league chew. But it still seemed bound up a bit and more tannin heavy than I’d have imagined. Certainly this particular bottle had years (decades) ahead of it. Will wait 10 years to drink my other bottle. Decanted and drank over 2 hours.

Sassicaia 1998 – timeless Bolgheri elegance. The nose? A stroll through a Tuscan hillside: dried rosemary, wild sage, sunbaked thyme. Silky structure, perfect balance, and still full of life after 26 years. A classic blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc, crafted for grace over power. The 1998 Sassicaia is drinking beautifully now, especially if you enjoy finesse over muscle. Perfect for those who appreciate tertiary aromatics, dried herbs, and mellow, old-world charm.

Served from a Magnum. Part of a Vertical (all from Magnums) 1999, 2004, 2011, 2013, 2019 Unfortunate for this one. Not flawed but not something I will speak about for the rest of my days. Blackcurrants, plums, blackberries, tobacco leaf, cedar, and tar. Time has drawn the edges inward sadly; the structure is softening, but the frame still holds. Acidity drives, not dominates. Tannins have begun to blur/ fade out. Oak shows through in spice and toast but is starting …

What more can we say for this Wien that we haven’t said in the last 11 tasting notes of ours over the last dacade? Maybe our favourite of all just because 2002 was a poor vintage and they made one of their best , before the oak use spiked and before the ripeness took over. We love 2002 Sassicaia, the bad year made great in the hands of masters. This bottle ( no decanting) was also a bit more fruity and oaky than the earthy ones we have had before, of course well evolved but just a beautiful bottle one more time just a touch different. Still a solid 95
