Burmester, Tawny 10YO Port

(Mid-90ies-is btl) Brilliant! Needs another 50 years to really shine!

Mid-90ies bottle (give or take). Tawny colour. All takers over the last few months have enjoyed the nose, smacked with its palate... And seeing the label, saying: "Jolly good, but lacking the omomph of the XX vntage port", of their fashion. What I've learned from these (and other) tasting opps, is that the designation, be it Vintage, Colheita or tawny, ageing will nevertheless do its thing. A young 29 ye tawny will always be better at 50 years. ( And …

From a rather old bottle, guesstimate 1990-ish. Deep, excellent 👌 Refined and impressive. This was a small glass after dinner. Will enjoy this bottle many more times.

Cherry fruit, fig, orange peel, furniture polish, chocolate, nuts, molasses, spices, and some honey, with medium(+) acidity and good length. This 10-Year-Old has good concentration and complexity, and the alcohol is contained well, with only light heat on the backend. A good 10-Year-Old. I even preferred it to the 20-Year-Old.

Would be a very good Tawny but lightly drying tannin impairs the overall experience.

Um Porto que volta e meia revisito, embora minha última postagem seja de oito anos atrás, já que esses Tawnies NV praticamente não mudam (acho que o degustador muda mais). Entregou aromas de frutas cristalizadas, amêndoas, toffee e capuccino. Em boca tem gole macio, intenso, untuoso e persistente, com uma acidez alta e suculenta que compensa bem o dulçor e o álcool, tornando o conjunto bastante equilibrado e prazeroso.

The impression of lovage, friendly, medium bodied, a bit too sweet in the finish.

1989 vintage

2023 bottling. Fresh. Loads of ripe fruit. Not the most subtle nose but the palate makes up for it combining relative power and refinement. Seems a bolder (more youthful?) iteration of a 20 year tawny, but not the worse for it. Delicious.

Bottled in 2017. Purchased for $50. Drank for #tawnytuesday with my good friend, George .Ruby in color with tawny hues, which shocked us both. We didn't expect that much ruby from a 20-Year. Garrafa bebida pouco a pouco em casa durante algumas semanas, se manteve estável em acidez e intensidade de aromas e sabores, perdendo com o tempo talvez alguma coisa de brilho e limpidez. Coloração âmbar acastanhada com marcado halo alaranjado. Nariz de toffee, capuccino, tabaco, figos, amêndoas, mel. Em boca dulçor e acidez bem balanceados, boa intensidade de sabores com praticamente tudo do nariz, envolvente, com bastante volume, intensidade e persistência. Esses Tawnies de idade não podem faltar na adega.

Plum jam smell, taste also plum, slightly sour, honey after some air, also hints of marmalade? Mellow burn.

Lovely subtle flavour for a port - nice and easy to drink with a mellow profile.

Butterscotch, pecan pie, raisin, salty toffee. Palate shows salt, toffee, nuts. Balanced sweetness - enough acid and structure to keep me coming back.

Bottled 2021. This is an exceptionally good 10 years tawny, even better than the 20 years from Burmester because it is drier and as complex and fragrant as that one. I haven't tasted them together but at least I think that the cane sugar nose with smoky notes and the firm layered taste were better than any 10 year old I can think of.

(5/5) another delicious port from Burmester. Just the right amount of sweetness. Very delicious.

2015 vintage

All that I could want from a red port.

Purchased for $40. A bit high for a 10-Year. A cloudy rust, burnt orange in color. Nose of caramel, toffee, spice and hazelnut. Similar notes on the palate with sticky apricot, fig and orange marmalade. Complex, but a really short finish. Disappointingly short. There's also a slight sour, burnt note on the finish. Better than Taylor and Dow, but a step behind the Vallado. Grade: A-

Bottled 2019. Drunk over nearly a week. Beautiful balanced port with notes of walnuts, licorice and caramel. Kept well in the fridge and had, rather surprisingly, some sediment making the last glasses a bit cloudy. The 2001 colheita seems richer but I find this is better balanced.

Bottled 2021. Quite deep brownish colour. Nose of brown sugar with hints of licorice. Best on the third day at 14-15 degrees, where it has a luscious mouthfeel, quite a lot of sweetness, hints of camphor from the alcohol and very little acidity. Excellent wine though stylistically I prefer the drier and more bual-like Dow 20 years.

Elegant 20 years. Good balance and complexity.

Very light amber color. Hints of honey, and almonds, no residual fruit. Good balance, smooth. Sub-average length finish.

Bottled 2016. Light tawny in the glass. Molasses, raisin and caramel on the nose with a hint of rose petal. Fig, custard and spiced rum baba on the sweet palate. One dimensional but tasty.

Bottled in 2018. No formal notes...after dinner served with nuts. Delicious! Unctuous and smooth and sirupy caramel flavours. Beautiful! 92+

Lovely nose of brown spices, caramel, burnt sugar, and fig aromas. The full-bodied palate is rich and sweet with white raisin, spicy, fig, and nutty flavours with a smooth texture and nicely balanced acids. Finishes long with spice and nutty notes.

This a fantastic 10-year-old tawny that balances freshness with characteristic aged port elements, showcasing notes of raisin, prune, honey (both buckwheat and floral), red berries, walnut, molasses and dark brown sugar, with hints of baking spice and chocolate. It's sweet, of course, but there's also vibrant acidity, yet more balance. It also features excellent texture and length, silky and smooth and lingering on the palate for ages. Pale garnet turning to amber at the core, palate is medium sweet and pronounced, fruits are dried and stewed, prune, mission fig, baking spice, dark honey notes, rum raisin, pastry note, vanilla, long finish. Very nice.

Pleasant tawny with a sea salt crest on the caramel waves Pine Cliffs bar, Algarve, Portugal.

It was great with risalamande and cherry sauce.

Excellent stuff to finish the night with, accompanying a cheese platter. Bottled in 2012. Pale tawny coloured. Medium intense aromas fig, raisins, vanilla, plum. Full bodied palate with high acidity and flavours of fig, dried raisins, dried apricot, vanilla, caramel. Long finish. 20% - gift

Or a weak bottle, or a weak vintage for Burmester; light colour, high acidity, a whiff of VA, some caramel, toffee, light finish; the wine was a bit nerveus.

4 x 50 Years (10 and 40 YO Tanwy) from the same producers : Juice and sweet raspberry fruit with a lovely spicy aftertaste. An okay wine but lacks a bit of acidity.

Tasted at Porto airport lounge, where else to taste Port? The aromas are of oak spice, dried fruits, walnut. The palate is incredibly sweet with lots of warmth from the alcohol as it goes down but the red fruit is there, it's very spicy on the palate and has a nice long finish. Top notch port and they have a bottle open to serve yourself so I'm going to have another one...

Garnet-orange, brown at rim; burnt sugar, stewed cherries, raisins, earth, cloves, gingersnaps; caramel, marmalade, hazelnut, slightly syrupy, medium body, decent acidity, balanced heat, fine tannins, lingering finish. Complex yet delicate notes of sugar, spices, dried fruit and sherry with an intriguing bitter finish. Fairly dry, not a lot of structure but delicious.

Predominantly clean, sweet dark berries, with faint notes of sweet spice (cinnamon?) and chocolate. Refined and quite delicious, although slightly thin on the palate. Medium bodied, soft silky tannins and a medium/medium(+) finish. I note previous tasting notes suggesting considerable bottle variance. Based just on this bottle, I would say this wine is good to drink now and over at least the next few years. Will revisit the issue when I open my next bottle.

Gorgeous. I haven't had many tawny ports. This seemed more vintage port like given the red fruit still showing through. Along with lots of raisin, nutty, caramel - more tawny-typical. Long finish with a little heat.

Monthly Tasting Group EEE #035; A mixed set of white, red and sweet (@ My place) : Last bottle of Burmester 1989 Vintage and it was a pleasure. Beautifully ripe red and dark berry fruits in the nose and the mouth. Pleasantly sweet and smooth. Ok acidity and silky soft tannin. Medium bodied and a lovely Port wine in the perfect drinking stage now.

A beautifully transparent dark brown color with a red hue. An inviting nutty nose of dried fruits, smoke, old furniture, plentiful spices and raisins. Smells quite rich, but not very sweet, which is nice. That being said, on the palate the attack is quite sweet and the sweetness really prevails almost to the very finish where it somewhat recedes. Very rich and expressive but also quite juicy and easy-drinking with notes of caramel, figs and nuts. Good structure. Some warmth …
