Grattamacco, Bolgheri, Rosso

The wine looks inky colored. The legs are medium. It smells like mineral. It tastes like coffee. The body is medium/full. The wine has polished texture. The wine finishes medium. This was not as earthy as I recall. Wonder if the minerality had subsided. Sat ton long in the cellar?

It all started in an Italian Supermarket with a fairly priced bottle of Bolgeri. This is the second wine of the Grattamacco winery. Back home I tried and boy the wine is packed with cherries, black fruit, wood, earthy tones. Every time I uncork one of these bottles, its black juice vanishes in seconds.

This wine is not austere...it is very approachable, soft with a bit of muscle. In fact, I wish it were more firm. Classic. Elegant. Drinks well on it's own, would not hold up to a strong cheese. This would be be the perfect flavour profile to accompany a rare roast beef...if only it had more acid and tannins. What I love about this bottle is that it’s stylistically correct and yet, very obviously Italian. I thought this was loaded with cassis and tobacco with a sort of “dustiness” that I find in the better, more authentic Super Tuscan wines. Definitely on the more rustic end of the spectrum. I hand carried a bottle of this back from Italy in May when surprisingly found it in a little wine shop in Bordigheria. Opened it tonight with a friend for a celebration and WOW! The nose of black cherry, and plum did not disappoint in the mouth. This is a nice full body, un-intimidating wine that will pair well with fall dishes. And should you find it on a wine list fot $30-$60 - go for it!

Dark cherries, rose petals and a hint of spice. Nicely balanced tannins and acidity. This is a very good QPR.

See through maroon; mint, floral, currant, young and fresh, a bit coiled on the palate but this is really a great expression of young Tuscan wine; tasty.

Ruby with fading edge. High toned, floral, and herbaceous. Light supple feel, clean red fruit, cocoa dust from wood, some spice, herbs, and gentle tannins. Very nice, elegant rendition for drinking over the short and intermediate term.

Some interesting sangiovese leather, tobacco and earthy notes but an otherwise unspectacular wine that should be consumed soon. decanted for 45 minutes then drunk over an hour. Developed into a less tannic wine but never showed true strong character or vivacious fruit. The structure was modest but unremarkable.

Well, this has developed nicely. Really requires a good 2-hour (at least) decant. Then very good, overcoming the inital tart thinness.

Huge nose. Tobacco, red fruit, and meat dominate the big aromatics on this wine. Dark, nearly opaque brick red in color. Medium-to-full mouthfeel. Red fruit, big tobacco, 'twigs & leaves,' and a little bit of green vegetable for the flavor profile. Long finish with mineral and slight mocha notes coming out. 13.5%

2004 vintage

This bottle disappointed--everything closed (or gone?). Drinkable, but with little delight. Hoping for better luck with the next bottle.
