Gemtree, Uncut Shiraz, McLaren Vale

Good grief this is syrup. Seems like 2024 not 2004 vintage. This will last decades more. If you like concentrated warm climate shiraz then this is for you. It’s got eucalyptus too. Nice touch of smoke. More appealing on the 2nd night. Still syrupy but more balanced, some violets. 14.5%, diam

17 years on and still drinking well.

Screwcap, 14.5% alc. Opaque, blood red. Oak, oak, oak on the nose. Resinous, sweet and creamy oak. With breathing, notes of bourbon, creamy oak, pan juices, licorice, a mix of herbs (thyme and basil) and woody spice. Sweet, slippery mouthfeel, with fully resolved tannins. The acid seems natural and well balanced; perhaps not a surprise given the cooler year. A slight alcohol warmth is noticeable, but doesn’t really distract, such is the big style of wine. Tile red in color. Starting to show it's age. Very hot at first and I'm still getting some heat even after about two hours. Aroma of dark fruit, blackberries, blueberries, and cherries with a slight bit of vegetal thrown into the mix. Flavor is predominantly ripe fruits with blackberries and blueberries making another appearance. However there is some leather as well, adding to the complexity. Low acidity. Plum, cassis and blackberry on the nose. Well-rounded palate of berries, well-integrated tannins. Not the jam-type Shiraz, but new-world with structure. Was rated a shared number one wine (out of 8) in a private blind tasting. Very good.

Gemtree Wine Theatre (Toast Australia Festival, Regents Park, London) : Gemtree 'Uncut' Shiraz is filtered and fined very lightly in order to expose some big, bold characters. I certainly found some massive fruit on the nose! The palate showed vanilla and ripe red fruit. Well rounded with lots of young, firm, tannin. Good! (Tasted in the Gemtree Wine Theatre, 'Toast Australia', Regents Park, London)

Layers of inviting aromas are present, both dark and red fruits, peppermint and a dash of oak. A very easy drinking and full bodied wine, fleshy plum and berry flavours lead into a lingering finish with fine tannins and a little oak.

14.5% alc...interesting nose at first glance, plenty o' brett, mint, blackberries, black pepper...full-bodied, thick and smooth on the palate - serious extraction, middling tannic structure, complex and evolved (but this may have never gone through the simpler grapey phase?) - but with all that, no heat!! Yeehaw! Long and chewy finish. Won at auction for $20, serious bargain at that price. Damn serious Sheeeeraz.
