Flower Day - Fill level excellent - just above the shoulder. Cork sound with only about 1 cm ingress from the wine. Double decanted off a teaspoon of fine sediment. Served in an Pinot Noir glass - my choice for older Nebbiolo and Aglianico developed wines. Opaque garnet core extending out to a thin slightly browning edge. Nose is dense with a bouquet of ripe dark fruit, asphalt, damp forest floor and crushed autumn leaves. On the palate it’s medium …

Drank this alongside the 2020, which is a very different wine. The 2019 is better. Tannins have mostly rounded off, but another year wouldn't hurt. Good wine for the price.

Tasted after a 45 minute decant. Dark ruby in colour with lovely aromas of slightly earthy liquorice & chocolate. On the palate, full bodied black fruit, blackberry, bramble, floral note, chocolate, high acidity, high tooth coating tannins with a long finish to leather, black pepper & a hint of tar. The fruit is pretty faded, the tertiary flavours have taken over, but the acidity & tannins still have lots of bite!

Italian Wine Scholar Class at The Texas Wine School. Deep ruby. Med+ aromas of sweet black cherries, dark plums, violets, licorice, black tea, earth, sulphur/tar, leather, balsamic. All stainless steel. Developing. Dry, w/ nice fruit, med+ acidity, tannins and alcohol (13.5%). Full-bodied, balanced, with med to med (+) intensity and length. Tasted again on 10/22/24, w/ consistent results, it has potential for improvement w/ a few more years of aging. Solid QPR at <$25.

Purple. Of the same kind as the 2015, which is drunk up from my cellar. Typical, cherry fruit, black berries, raspberries, blueberries, flowers and spices. All unfold over an hour or so, but ready from the start. 93 from Suckling which is a bit high imo. Nevertheless excellent. 5/12/16+/8+. -2030+

Tasted after a 90 minute decant. Dark ruby in colour with lovely aromas of sweet black fruit, tar, leather progressing to licorice. On the palate, medium bodied black fruit, black cherry/blueberry/blackberry, leather, slightly earthy/forest floor, high acidity, high soft tannins with a long finish to tar, black cherry & a hint of pepper. Even though the flavour is not particularly complex, it is pleasant.

This is still developing in a positive way from my warmer than textbook cellar. Perfectly stored bottles should hold through till 2030, I guess. For more details have a look at my earlier notes, this hasn't change in the last year. 5/12/17/8

This bottle, purchased upon release and stored under ideal conditions, was a "forgotten soldier" that was incidentally discovered in the cellar. Decanted off of its sediment and allowed two hours in decanter, it is a deep garnet wine that unfurls a surprisingly attractive bouquet of dark plums, Asian spices, cocoa, pipe tobacco and loamy earth. Medium-bodied, freshly acidic and without any heat from its 13.5% alcohol, it delivers flavors in line with the aromas and stays solid on the mid-palate. …

This is still in great shape from my cellar. In fact this is maybe the best bottle I had yet. I still believe that the 95 points from Suckling are overdone, but the 89 points from Monica Larner are obviously to low as well, because she gave it a drinking window -2020. And this bottle is so fresh, fruity and more silky than previous bottles, it should go well for some more years. So Monica would give it more than …

Buen vino de mesa. Seco.

Same scents and flavors as previous notes. But: I more and more guess that Monica Larner from the Wine Advocate is not totally wrong with her given drinking window -2020. This is sure not meant for long term cellaring and I feel that it is slowly beginning to loose a bit of its fruit now. -2022. 5/12/17/6.

This needs air. At first it was more like an 85. 1-2hs in the decanter was not enough. Only after two days using Vac au Vin it got much rounder, more complex, better finish. Truth be told I had already drunk a glass of an excellent Payen Tabali when I opened it. But after 30 min or so I assume it shouldn't matter anymore, but I could be wrong, of course.

I love @Portlandseth's note on this wine and I totally get where he is coming from. I don't think it's quite that bad though, and with a little air some of the sour lifts and some body is added. Still a little lightweight esp in mid-palate and I'm not sure that I'm a fan of the saltiness, but that's personal taste and I'm not verse enough in this grape to say if that's what we signed up for. Anyway, it's …

Like a few other Italian varieties, I have had some Aglianico, so I am far from an expert, but the past iterations of wines I've tasted from this grape needed at least a few years to calm down. Might I venture to guess that the additional time in my cellar, not knowing this wine was there, actually did it some good? Good fruit, powerful acidity, and more than a couple hours of verve. Bravo.

Pleasant bouquet of creme de cassis, sage, mint and bell pepper. In the mouth the attack is pleasantly fruity, but the mid palate veers off-road into a tomoato patch and the finish goes over a cliff into the ocean. Highly acidic and salty, I find this bottle very difficult to drink in its present form. Perhaps 5 years of cellaring will smooth everything out but in the mean time I'd rather suck on a pickled lemon. I wouldn't give this …

Quite a good value (had a friend's dinner). Aglianico is the core of this wine and somewhat rare among Italian wines that get to the US. Aglianico is often dubbed "the Nebbiolo of the south" because of its extraordinary aging potential. Today, some of the country's best Aglianico is grown in the DOCs of Taurasi, which is in Campania, and Aglianico del Vulture, in Basilicata. Apparently, James Suckling really likes this wine, giving it a 95 in a recent review. …

Medium-Ruby, hint of garnet on the rim. Nose: Bright cherry, licorice, smoke, white pepper, spicebox and faint gaminess. Healthy projection, especially of the pepper/smoke. Nose is packed through with these various sideline notes. Mouth: Tart cherry and licorice kick things off, followed by said original pepper and smoke notes and a nice hit of salinity and marjoram/thyme. Fruit weight is not as dense/full as expected for aglianico. Again the tertiary notes are running the show here, fruit is only a …

Ruby-garnet color, starts to show some age, good transparency. The nose has a smoky note, some green pepper and after swirling, a hint of sweetness. The palate is just ok, smooth but quite uninteresting: little structure, not much aromatic intensity (a dry raisiny note). Drying finish. On the second day it doesn't have anything more to say.

I think this is my first experience with the anglianico grape. If I didn't know any better, it tasted to me like a classic, backwards, bold sangiovese. It's a subtle wine, astringent and tannic with a lot of rhubarb and cedar initially coming through followed by cherries and strawberries. Kind of tastes like you're licking the bottom of a wooden basket that's been carrying a load of berries. There's also hints of terragon, anise and some white pepper. This wine …
