Richard Z’s dinner (in absentia) @ Hawksmoor : Dense ruby. A cool fruited element here. A little too warm by the time we get to this. White pepper and just a hint lof raspberry. The elegant side of spicy. Too warm now, but a slight blockiness to the fruit and a degree of one-dimensionality. ***

Still drinking beautifully - yes, showing signs of it’s almost 20 years but certainly not past it. Lovely complex nose, smooth and seductive mid weight palate and excellent length. I was surprised (but delighted) it was still going so strong.

Last bottle unfortunately. A nice wine, with all the classic cool climate characteristics. The flavour profile isn't for everyone, particularly for those that prefer the big, bold Barossa / McLaren Vale shiraz, but the structure and finesse can be appreciated. It is not showing signs of age yet, so if you have a bottle or two, feel safe to keep them for at least a couple more years.

Gorgeous nose on this one, just so aromatic mixing floral and spice. Texturally it is beautiful with a smooth and savoury palate, flickering with spice and violets and some smokey meat flavours. A really lovely Genesis.

Dark purple colour. Spice and prunes on the nose. Plums and blueberry on the palate. Initially this wine felt disjointed, but after 90 minutes everything had come together. There is a balance and structure that marks this wine out as high quality. The flavour profile is clearly cool climate and very distinctive. It won't appeal to everyone. It is hard to see it improving markedly from here, but it will last for a few more years.

Beautiful Genesis, a wine that for me has a certain "x factor" which is hard to pin down other than it has a very different flavour profile to many cool climate wines. Impeccably balanced with a savoury yet tangy edginess and tannic grip which demands good food. Olives and spice, bacon and cedar it's all happening. Great stuff.

Very deep-coloured, almost black. Rich nose with prunes, dark berries and, underneath, a cool freshness. Luxurious, layered and smooth in the mouth, good balance. Excellent.

Cracking wine, balances so well between elegance and opulence. Plums, five spice and smoked tea on the palate with fine, yet chalky tannins. Feel I have caught this a few years too early and it will be spectacular in time.

This was very nice. At this stage it needs a lot of air. Decanted 1 hour before first sip, still it was closed. After 4 hours it showed a dark purple color, dark fruit like plum, black currant on the nose and palate with some liqurice. Just lovely.

Well, my previous tasting notes were spot on, but my score wasn't. Bloody bottle variation under cork.... This was simply beautiful. Deeply flavoured (unlike the last bottle), complex, long. Everything a good syrah should be.

Dark purple. Flavours of dark fruits and spice, with a hint of liquorice. Flavours of dark fruits, a hint of blueberry and some gaminess the longer it is open. Chocolate like oak. Quite aromatic, but somehow just a bit unfulfilling. I was expecting more balance and length.

Fall 2008 David Bowler Wine Event (New York City) : Deep ruby color. Asian spice nose as of duck sauce or Hoisin sauce; perfumy, with elements of lemon grass. Sour plum on the palate, medium to full bodied with good acidity. 89-91 pts.
