Alas, it’s the last bottle of Kevin’s “another much maligned 2011”. The nose is just as gorgeous as ever, color still quite purple with very little brick color to indicate its age. The tannins are finally soft enough that most of the sharp edges are gone leaving a rounder mouth feel. Big Coombsville red and black fruits. Still has that long finish. Still has lots of sediment, lol. Wish I still had another case of this. Compared to today’s Napa …

5 of 5 good color, no signs of age 10 Of 15 aromas of dark cherry eucalyptus, sweet tobacco 15 of 20 softer mouthfeel, consistent with 10yo+ age. Still enough tannins for structure and mouthfeel pairing well with grilled steaks 10 of 10 age able. It’s softer, yes, but Kevin’s much maligned ‘11 is still drinking well

P&P thru a Vinturi, had with rare NY strip bison.. Even better after an hour wait.. Still a bit left in the bottle under glass to try after 24 hours. Quite a bit of sediment after 3+ years in my cellar.Pencil shavings, a hint of old leather, fruit on the nose. Really interesting on the palate and very silky as well. Sorry I only had one.

BIG flavor bomb cab that also has finesse. Great after an hour - managed to save a glass for the second day and it still drank really nicely

Thin, vegetal, astringent on day 1, put back and left overnight, Didn’t have much hope, but a different bottle of wine on day 2. Added weight and concentration, lost green notes and back to black and purple fruit, light cassis and mineral notes.

Dark dark garnet. Pretty good balance between fruit and oak. This still has time in the bottle. Lots of sediment so keep the bottle upright for a day before opening. Was perfect with that filet.

This bottle not consistent with my previous experiences with Kobalt, and very different from other CT reviews of this vintage: I find predominant flavors of bell pepper and asparagus that overwhelm what fruit there is. Not balanced. I’ve enjoyed previous Kobalts, this was a disappointment.

Danielle and I had this for her birthday at J Alexanders. Incredible bottle all to it's own. However with the Steak Maui...incredible.

Dark garnet in the glass. Fine tannins. Smooth, with a round mouthfeel. Cigar box, faint menthol, big dark fruit. Easy drinking. Unbelievable for a 2011 vintage. Nicely done.

The more aged Kobalt I drink, the more I appreciate I. Wonderful bottle of cab from a difficult vintage. Slightly less viscous than other older vintages I’ve tried, but extremely well integrated. Subtle flavor profile, leans more towards old world in style than most Napa cabs I experience. Highly recommended, particularly at the prices this vintage is available for in the secondary market.

For such a tough vintage, Kobalt has hit it out of the park with this Coombsville cab. The fruit has largely given away to serious and complex tertiary aromas of smoke, tobacco, cedar, and grilled herbs. Flavors of blackcurrant, loose black tea, and hint of mocha are framed in pliant tannins. You can drink this now, but there is no rush. Be sure to filter as there was a ton of sediment built up in the neck of the bottle.

Opened two bottles in quick succession. One was super ready, lots of sediment and beautifully.smooth. Second had a little more tannin. Both had strong scent and flavor of green olives atop dark fruit. Thick, smooth mouthfeel with balanced sweetness and acidity. Excellent.

Dark garnet hue. Dark berry nose, with hint of blueberry, slight oak. Deep, dark berries, nicely balance/structured, blackberries, mocha. Very enjoyable-- a delight!

medium bodied, smooth, elegant...right amount of cherry, brick, terroir, tart raspberry, hints of blackfruit at the tail end...a cabernet profile right up my alley...reminds me of some of the chimney rocks I loved back in the day...

Decanted for an hour. Really nice cabernet, especially for a challenging vintage. Dark color with black cherry notes and some blackberry on the finish. Good depth and long finish. Drinking very well right now.

This almost bested an 09 Favia Cerro Sur, but in the end, the Cerro Sur won out on complexity. PNP but decanted and then back into the bottle and over to a neighbors house. Ready to go from the start. Would not imagine this was a 2011. Not as rich as the 2012, but damn close. Such development since the last bottle. Tannins and oak integrated! Drank many years senior to its age. Nose was milk chocolate covered berries, hints …

PnP and on open this was good, threw off a bit of sediment on pouring. Typical Coombsville with heavy dark fruit, minimal oak and tannins starting to subside. Great stuff for 11. Pleasant surprise!

Bassins 28th Annual California Barrel Tasting (Mandarin Hotel, Washington, DC) : Blackberry and toast, mint, mocha. Dark profile. High tannins and high extraction. Overall pretty balanced and high quality for the vintage. 90-92
