PnP nose: from a Burgundy glass - yeah this is the stuff! I can't pick one or two obvious fruits, but it seems like a pleasant mix of cherries, plums, and maybe strawberries. But over and above the fruit, there's a huge musty floral aroma (potpourri?) PnP taste: vibrant acidity, totally integrated tannins, medium minus bodied, a nice slightly sour finish, concentrated and intense flavour of Chinese preserved plums, underlaid by black tea leaves and emerging mushroom. Slightly brickish colour. …

Gawd, did I enjoy this! Wines that have been cellared this long can be a bit of a hit miss proposition for me, but I do declare this is one of those well cellered Spanish for offerings that do what I like to see them do after 20 years or so! Right or wrong, it was interesting to get completely blasted on this puppy while I rocking out to some classics from the 60s. I wish I was kidding. You …

I have (so far) drunk over 24 bottles of this. It is a perfectly balanced, mature gran reserva with delicate fruit, wonderful freshness, noticeable but restrained oak and a persistent finish.

91++ let's see For context see my rating method and preferences here: https://www.cellartracker.com/user.asp?iUserOverride=891161 This is beautiful adn complex wine, showing age and evolution, but not "old age". At first it had an odd aroma that I could simply not pinpoint. Still can't; but one review gave m a clue. I would have said "something both sour and savory" but then I read 'cranberries. Closer, but misses the (old) mushroomy/savory thing that's there. Interesting. Obviously very earthy. Lots of aromatic and …

Excellent Rioja that is drinking very well now. Was just as good the next day so should keep for several years.

Classic old world style Rioja with plenty of fruit also. Great balancing acidity, complexity in a.multi faceted wine. Drinks great now but no danger of falling apart. Long aged, Up there with Lopez Heredia and Faustino gran reservas.

Relatively pale shadow of two previous bottles (drunk 2021 and 2022), though still enjoyable - and fantastic value at £55 on a gastropub wine list. Not a huge amount of oak or fruit left at this stage. Piquant, a bit leathery and a bit tomatoey, supple and easygoing.

I was looking forward to trying this, and it didn't dissapoint. PnP the nose is extremely promising. While there is tertiary chararcter, there is also plenty of red fruit - cherry, cranberry, raspberry. Predictably traditional-style Rioja, medium bodied, high acidity, leather, tobacco, dusty varnished wood, the fruit is there, but it is tart and a little thin. Some very fine tannins, but acidity provides most of the structure. 10-15 mins in the glass and it starts gaining some weight. An …

Bearing in mind Urbina used to be a traditionalist I really struggled to get too much Rioja character here. Deep red and plenty of fruit but not the balance desired and a bit clunky. Preferred his basic seleccion so much more.

Nose: cherry, dark bramble, tobacco, oak, leather bound books and rich mahogany, vegetation, dry rub spices After a decant fruit leather, toasted oak, coconut Palate: tart red cherries, ripe black cherries, perfectly ripe blackberries, supple leather tobacco leaf, brilliant spice bouquet of black pepper, paprika, dried oregano, thyme, plenty of fragrant oak, great acidity and brightness after 20 years, elegant tannins with very subtle grip after a decant more stewed fruits, baking spices, burnt caramel Finish: generous, long and decadent, …

In a really nice proper place right now. With good acidity, and not too much savoriness.

Popped after downing a Napa and an Argentinian cab sauv, so this wine was at a disadvantage but did not disappoint. No detailed notes as I write this the next day, but general impressions are that this was not only a breath of fresh air after 2 cabs, but legitimately an excellent wine. The wine was multifaceted but seemingly not the most complex. Downing 2 bottles of cab probably killed our palates tbf. On the other hand, there was no …

A good example how a good producer can make good wines with good value. After more than 20 years it was still fresh, dark fruit notes, leather and tobacco notes with a characteristic orange peel notes in the back taste. Fairly long finish and excellent pairing for a charcuterie board.

Cork is not quite a full 2", but is high quality and in excellent condition. Drinking well now, but no rush: this wine should continue to evolve/improve for a few more years. Drink by 2034.

Very good 100% Tempranillo from Rioja, this shows best and comes out of its shell with a good 3 hours in the decanter. Mix of cedar, blackberry and spices on the nose. Very good balance in the mouth, medium body, acidity on point and a very decent finish, in a very good spot now.

I have had several bottles and all have been excellent. Decanting preferred but not essential. Very well balanced wine, with freshness, oak and restrained fruit combining with long finish. Fabulous.

Monitored wine every hour and it showed best after 1 hour full decant with no sediment. Very seductive nose. In the glass, white rimmed brick, Earthy with oak. mid-level acidity, perfectly balanced.

This pours medium garnet in the glass with light bricking. The nose is lifted, complex and nicely mature showing cuban cigar, graphite, gravel, ripe strawberry, toasted coconut, dill, rich cedar, dried cherry, shoe polish, nori, and a lovely topnote of grapefruit. The palate is silky and hugely appealing entering on the cherry fruit, turning to grapefruit on the mid-palate and finish. Acid is medium plus and tannin is medium minus, giving this freshness without an imposing structure. The finish is …

Short decant and into the glass. Brickish color. On the nose dusty leather, oak and tobacco. Initial sips yielded pencil shavings, toasted oak and subdued vanilla. Tertiary notes of balsamic, black pepper and smoke. Decent finish. Med bodied, bone dry, smooth and still had some acidity. Though much of the fruit had fallen away, this had depth. Great age on this one and it is likely at the tail end of its drinking window. For the price, this is unbeatable …

Amazing how a 50$ Rioja with 19 years of age can be so good. Beautiful complexity, dill, spices and black cherry smell. Dark chocolate, oak, leather on the palate. Some orange/brick colors to it indicating age. We had the 1996 last year and it was interesting but past its prime. This one is still great and holds its own. Drink now but you could wait a year or two and it would still be fine!
