Past it's best. Dark rich fruits, with lots of leather and tar. Somewhat gloopy, very evolved. Long finish, with complexity. Would have been better 5 to 10 years ago.

Weekly tasting group RWP #350; Bolgheri vs Bordeaux (@ CvR) : Beautiful and luxurious bouquet with dark berries. On the palate chocolate, herbs and spices, beautiful acidity and round tannin. Some bell pepper in the finish. Great length. This wine is in a perfect drinking stage now and no real hurry. Delicious and a real treat! 93+

This wine is fully matured and drinking beautifully. It has aged like a nice Bordeaux while maintaining the nuances expected from a wine from Bolgheri. Dried roses and old leather on the nose, dusty dark fruit with some meatiness. The acidity has faded but still stood up to grilled ribeye tonight. About 30 minutes in decanter showed its peak with some decline after 2 hours.

Rich and ripe, but not roasted. Supple and plump, dark fruited, with a little fig in the fruit. Fleshy and round. A crowd pleaser but not a brain stimulator. Still not a bad showing in the vintage. 88

Our last bottle signed by the master himself at a tasting at Binnys. Momma felt this had some TCA, a compound she has ridiculously low tolerance for, but I got no such inference. I sensed perhaps a bit of older barrel but really a nice nose of menthol and berry. Flavors are lean but still vibrant, with cracked pepper, blueberry, tar and tannic notes. I liked it. But I'd drink soon. Thanks Angelo.

I bought several bottle at Binny's in St. Charles, Il after a tasting with the maestro himself. Binny's couldn't muster more than about 20 in attendance but what an experience to meet Angelo, who was humble and approachable. This wine was, to memory, from youngish Bolgheri vines and it never really met my expectations. Pretty good lift in the nose with fir, spice and berry notes. Flavors seem a bit faded, red currant, pepper and good acid backbone. Wanted more, …

Dark opaque red color. Edge is light brown'ish/orange. Fruit is still present however it is reduced since last bottle 2 years ago. Still a nice wine however it will not develop any further. Medium to long finish. Very nice.

A huge wine, but at its prime stage and way too young to drink for now. The nose is superb upon opening but after 4 hours in the bottle, it was had closed down and it took another hour to open slightly back. I don't think decanting 4 hours would really have been enough(but one never knows ) Anyway the potential of wine is definitely there in the bottle except one has to wait at least 6~7 more years before …

Weekly tasting group #118; Italy: Bolgheri (@ CvR) : The bouquet is not really expressive, but there are red and dark forest fruits, herbs and sweet spices. On the palate a slightly sweet start with mainly red fruits, a lot of soft sweet spices, tobacco, well integrated and beautifully toasted oak. Firm but good acidity, good tannin and bitterness as well and a good length. Beautiful, delicious and complex wine which I scored 91 due to the not so abundant …

EWS Best of Bolgheri (blind tasting) (New York Vintners) : Coffee nose and charcoal with sweet ripe cherry and tobacco; merlot really shines nice energy; a little astringent on the clipped tail as sunshine peaks through clouds.

Pnp. Drank over 2 days. Still a lot going on here. Dark opaque red, edge starting to turn brown. Nose with red, black fruit. Spice. Palate is very good with blueberry, spice, chocolate and a hint of earth. Medium finish. Will wait with next bottle another 3 years.

Seemed fresh but mature, nose of blueberry and anise. Juicy blueberry, chocolate and smoke notes with plenty of acidity and medium soft, resolved tannin. Drink now, I think the merlot in this limits long-term drinkability. I know it is expensive (released at over $100/bottle) but this probably has peaked and may actually be heading down. The tannins seem to be just a little strong at this point v. the fruit levels.

14.0% alcohol. Dark red color. Lovely nose of cool Cabernet fruit, with tobacco, cedar, and a brightly fruity note that comes underneath. In the mouth, beautifully delineated, with forward black fruit, lively spice and earth, and forceful structure. The long finish has integrated tannins. A good marriage between structure and the ripe vintage. A-

Opened this bottle for Valentine's Day and was not disappointed - had great dark fruit flavor right out of the bottle with sweet tannins filling out for great balance. Also decanted the bottle while cooking and eating dinner, wine seemed to remain the same. Drank with penne ala vodka which was not a good match - the spicyness of the vodka sauce did not mesh with the wine - my girlfriend and i both found the wine to be MUCH …

The nose had dark fruits, spice and some earthy aromas. The palate revealed red and blue fruit with spice and some oak. Very nice mouthfeel and a medium-long finish. Not overly tannic at all, but this could still mellow out a lot more. What a nice Bordeaux blend. I would love to get more of this - especially considering the large discounts off the release price this currently has.

Tasted at an event with about 30 people and Angelo Gaja as moderator. What a treat to meet the King. Gaja's property is just up the road from Ornelaia and the international varietal heritage shows. For our tastes, we liked this the best even amongst his single vineyard '99 Sori Tilden, San Lorenzo and Costa Russi which sell for nearly three times the price. Gaja is overpriced but I guess, like first growth Bordeaux, he can command it. According to …

An extremely well integrated wine. Largely shut down as we tasted at a restaurant, but it showed a little of what it's got for the future. Fruit, lavendar, menthol, tobacco. Excellent wine.
