Emmanuel Rouget, Echezeaux Grand Cru

Sensational. Best Rouget I’ve had. Very, very pure with an intense inner sweetness and some holiday spice. Silky texture and the structure has receded. A pointe.

Reference, perfect bottle. Bright red cherry purity on the nose. Alongside ‘90 Jayer which is also reference. The palate on this Rouget has some earth influence and slightly darker spice. Tingling palate. Beautiful. Notes from memory the morning after. See also 11/01/2021 note.

Rouge tomate! In a great way. Gorgeous bouquet, has that classic red tomato and tomato leaf detail that i always find in these wines, in addition to mature red cherry fruit. Tighly wound and not particularly given. Dark and brooding. Prominent acid profile on account of vintage. A rather unremarkable wine and lost in the lineup.

1996 vintage

Pop and allowed airing in glass, color is medium garnet with a brick red rim. Beautiful bouquet of herbs, spices, red berry fruits and sous-bois, indication of aging. Fruits still abundant on palate, tannin mostly resolved with residual dustiness and rustic. Good acidity and balance, medium to short finish, nonetheless inviting sips after sips.

It was very earthy, almost like a Cote de Beaune. Unsure about its authenticity.

Solid but unexciting given lack of delineation and slight rusticity.

Opened in Courchevel. P&P. This bottle was slightly over the hill, even if it wasn't tertiary just yet. Still has decent fruit coming through and some structure, balanced with good acidity and minerality. However this was just a bit tired and not very expressive. It's a shame - judging by the other notes here there seems to be a fair amount of bottle variation, so perhaps I just got unlucky.

This particular bottle showed a little past peak, not tertiary or anything, but the fruit is fading. Higher acid too. A little out of balance. Still good and distinctly Rouget, but a little less fresh and pure.

Epitome / reference Rouget / Jayer. Pure sweet red cherry and gorgeous spice. In a flight with ‘90 Cros Parantoux and ‘90 Beaumonts. All three were insanely perfect bottles. Beaumonts maybe has more of the spice, Cros P is the freshest and brightest red, Echezeaux sort of splits the difference and has more texture. Tasted blind, this wine had a deep red center and red rims. The medium- intensity nose was subtle but captivating. It featured cherry cola, plums, mocha, and violets. In the mouth, this wine took a lot of air to come around and show itself. it was light bodied, had firm acidity, and incredible balance. Booming nose that is bright red and black cherry, robust, spicy, big projection. Signature Rouget zesty tomato. Faint soily influence but moreover impressive for incredible purity and freshness. Precise. The palate is powerful red and black fruit, long, delineated, and texturally soft. Flavours imprint on a lengthy finish. Beautiful and excellent.

Beautifully expressive bouquet has both pure red cherry but also underbrush and sauvage about it. More so clean and pure red berry fruit but also developing a savory tomato note that I often find in top Rouget. Layers of detailed spice. Elegant, showy, detailed, but also powerful. Oaked but has a faint rusticity. Glimpses of the hand of Jayer might be generous, but certainly in the ballpark.

a post-worthy Rougeot Echezeaux 1990. Youthful and energetic, surprisingly still red fruit freshness. The nose is quite seductive but it’s the length and body that is really the highlight here. A little sauvage - like a great Burg with a little extra magic. Level was great and I bought this 10 years ago from my friend Linden at Finewineexperience. Guess it would cost a little more now, not least because of the Jayer connection.

We flash decanted the bottle to serve. Opened up beautifully with red fruit, spice, flowers and minerals. Palate showed good structure and depth. Lovely Rouget.

Echezeaux Extravaganza: Henri Jayer and DRC 1976-2007 (La Grenouille, New York) : Much more fruit forward than the DRC and Jayer. Comes across very young.

Have has a few of my new ‘96 Rougets this week and they all showed similarly. Very good but also youthful and wound up without as much aromatic expression as you’d hope for just yet. A lot of spice, particularly in this Echezeaux. A fair bit of oak polish, but not over done, which I was a little worried about, and there is a ton of great fruit to stand up to it. 1996 Burgundy Retrospective - The Third Session (Clarity - Vienna, Virginia) : Medium expressive nose displaying blackberry, a hint of raspberry, sap, spicy spices and limestone mineral. Youthful yet fully integrated palate, finely layered sweet red fruit, silky, precise and detailed, bright acidity, strong mineral and a long sweet red fruit driven finish with spicy spices at the end. Echezeaux Extravaganza : We ended up with 2 bottles of this wine as the person who was supposed to bring a 1995 somehow ended up bringing this. Clear bottle variation and one was much better than the other. Based on the better bottle this had a nice nose and should have enough fruit in the palate to eventually balance out the acidity.

Echezeaux Extravaganza : Even though the bottle appearance and provenance were fine, the top half of the cork was completely black from oxidation. Unfortunately the bottle was oxed. A real shame as this wine should be contending for top honours based on past experiences...

1996 and 2002 served side by side. A very nice pair. Over a long dinner, the 96 developed the most, and ultimately had a deep earthy feel that I liked a lot. The 02 was fresh, tasty, and stayed that way throughout. Both were very good, if not outstanding.

The nose here is unmistakably of the classic Rouget / Jayer style with pure and clean red berry fruit. This is still very fresh but a developed dusty earthiness has integrated into the detailed aromatics. There is a big roasted tomato note hanging over this that I find in many Rouget wines, but that I also think is particularly 1990. Drinking beautifully now and softened with age. Lovely ripe cherry fruit still excites the palate and the finish is mature with notes of nutmeg, sweet earth and complex red spices.

A bit of funk on the nose that never blew off and was more distracting to me than others. The underlying fruit and quality was undeniable. However it was a clear step different from the first 2 wines. Received 1 first place vote for the night and placed a respectable 3rd.

Served blind from magnum, this was more rustic and herbaceous than the '96 Dujac Ech served beside it. Got a bit softer and rounder with air, but still underperformed what I would have expected. That said, the group was split and I was in the minority.

Took 2 hrs for the wine to open up. Deep nose with flower, spice, red fruit, dark fruit, cedar wood and vr spice. Palate is deep, a bit earthy, like Jayers style. This wine can still improve with aging. It has just entered its drinking window with easily 15-20 yrs ahead.

Jayer dinner. Flight with 90 Rouget CP, 90 Meo CP and 90 Jayer CP. Not memorable, just felt bottle was not totally clean. Small faults.

Jayer dinner. Flight with 91 Meo Murgers, 96 Rouget Beaumonts and 96 Meo Richebourg. Felt acidity overtaken fruit, certainly not a wine that wowed and developed poorly in the glass. Some vitamin aromatics. Mid weight.

Rouget Echezeaux Dinner (Christopher's - Phoenix AZ) : Open and double decanted 3+ hours before serving. Served single blind in 96/99/00/01 vertical. Black and red cherry with spice hints. Age appropriate evolution for a 1996, so mostly fresh to start, more mature after 4 hours in glass. Moderate weight and length, but good balance. Nicely aged, medium red with brownish rim. Lovely mature red fruit nose with red floral elements, spices, dried meat and undergrowth. Great palate with the right amount of secondary flavors, lovely sweet red fruit core and lots of stuffings to savor with. Long finish, drinking very well and should stay this way for the medium term.

Very floral with flowers, caramel, red fruits, and menthol. The wine opened up beautifully in the glass. Both the palate and nose were tremendously complex. The palate had ripe fruit but the sweetness was in balance. It gained weight with more time. Its drinking nicely now with another 8-10 years ahead in its drinking window. First time tasting emmanuel rouget. Super impressed!

Very closed on the nose and even after 3hours of air, just barely getting glimpses of dense meaty dark fruit, subtle spice and iron notes. Also holding back on the palate with more dark fruit, spice, touch of red fruit and dried roses. Stacked and concentrated with excellent texture and balance, but just not a lot of excitement. Relatively short finish. I will need to revisit this one given other notes written.

Black cherry and light earth on the nose. Slightly off mildew aroma on the back of the nose. Black plum and black raspberry on the palate with earthy notes. Short and somewhat abrupt finish.

Medium garnet, earthy nose with rusted iron and some deep hiding floral aroma. High tone red fruit with sharp acidity, more earthy but also strong floral and spice notes rush to a balanced finish. Let it breathe and see what happens.

Tasted with the 91 and 87. The 96 was darker and wilder on the nose and palate. Good weight and density on the palate with darker fruis but felt a bit disjointed. Still in the process of resolving and improving I'm guessing. Would love to try it again in 5-10 years

Even though this bottle was clearly off due to poor storage--purchased at auction, it was still pleasant. The nose was a disaster but the palate revealed iron, wet earth, subtle floral and spice notes.

Acker Paulee Dinner (The Fourth, NYC) : Wonderfully ripe red and black fruit on the nose and palate. Subtle but determined spice along with a hint of iron and earth. Ripe and forward yet elegant. The detail and harmony is really impressive. Long, tender finish.
